Since the turn of the 19th century, Armenia witnessed a dramatic plunge in forest cover from 25 percent of its territory to the current low, estimated at 8-9 percent. Armenian Forest Services • The management of forest lands under supervision of “Hayantar” is 342,400 ha, of which 277,100 ha is covered by trees. This is approximately 75% of forests in Armenia. • Areas under management of seven national parks is 300,000 ha, of which 55,000 ha is covered by trees. This is approximately25% of forests in Armenia. • Hayantar has branches in different states. • Main tree types are: , , hornbeam, . • From 2012-2017 Hayantar has planted 1500 ha from which 647 ha were new forests and 853 ha were reforestation.

Priorities of the Armenian government is the preservation, protection, and reproduction of forests Reasons The following are some of the key drivers of deforestation in Armenia: • The best trees are cut illegally for commercial purposes, such as construction, furniture making, and export • Grazing of livestock in forest areas prevents regeneration • Lack of education and awareness of the forest’s value • Lack of community ownership and responsibility for forests • Lack of sustainable forest management practices Illegal Logging
