In Armenia, changing behavior and attitudes toward the environment often begins with the teacher, and then makes its way outside the classroom through projects that change the entire community. ATP initiated teacher training in 2005 based upon the “Plant an Idea, Plant a Tree” manual. One of the outcomes has been the establishment of a pilot program for student-run eco clubs. Teachers use the manual for science classes, and ATP’s educators visit summer camps to provide environmental lessons. For the past two summers, ATP has held four- day Eco Camps that reached thousands of children. The program includes hands-on lessons on river and forest ecosystems, biodiversity, fire prevention, and waste management. “Our goal is to promote environmental stewardship, connections between youth, problem solving skills, and an opportunity to get outdoors into nature during the long summer months,” says Hovsepyan. ATP intends to expand this program in the coming years. In the diaspora, the Building Bridges program connects young people with their peers in Armenia to create friendships and solutions for solving environmental problems. Building Bridges focuses on raising awareness to students outside Armenia about our environmental heritage, while providing them the opportunity to connect with students in Armenia. School groups, families, and individuals are invited to Get Involved! visit and plant trees. ATP Offers Many “We love sharing the beauty of Armenia’s environment with students and teachers.
