Schmidt Dear Colleagues, The Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research (GA) invites scientists from academia and industry dealing with all aspects of medicinal plant and natural product research as well as phytotherapy to its 61st International Congress and Annual Meeting. This important scientific meeting will be held in Mnster, a picturesque city surrounded by beautiful countryside in the heart of Westphalia, in the Northwest of Germany. Mnster once played an outstanding role in history. The peace treaty of Mnster was signed here as part of the “Westphalian Peace” of 1648, which ended the Thirty Years War and paved the way to a modern Europe as we know it. Today, Mnster is a lively young city with the University “Westflische Wilhelms-Universitt” (WWU) as a major employer and regional center of research and education. With more than 40.000 students and an exciting research profile WWU is one of the biggest and leading universities in Germany. The conference will take place in the central university area, in front of the historic castle of Mnster which is located in the middle of the city’s historic downtown area. Our scientific programme has attracted the interest of a true host of researchers worldwide so that we look forward to welcoming more than 600 scientists from over 60 countries. The main topics of the congress are: – Natural products against neglected diseases – In vivo phytopharmacology – Skin-active natural products – Glycobiology and carbohydrate-based active compounds – Ethnopharmacology of African medicine – Ethnopharmacology of Amazonian medicine – Computational methods in natural products chemistry – Hyphenated analytical techniques and target fishing – Natural product chemistry – Plant phenols: structures, analytics and activities – Quality control methods for medicinal plants, extracts and isolated natural products – Herbal medicinal products in animal healthcare and veterinary medicine The program is highlighted by nine invited lectures delivered by distinguished speakers covering the major scientific topics of the conference. More than 75 short lectures will present the current state of the art in natural product science, and especially younger scientists, but also researchers from industry will present high quality results for intense discussion. Workshops dedicated to topics of particular interest will provide in-depth insights into various aspects of medicinal plant and natural products research. Three poster sessions, scheduled within central time frames during the congress, will bring together scientists from different disciplines and stimulate the exchange of experiences and knowledge. It is a pleasure to the organizers that the European Cooperation in Science and Technology within the COST 1006 framework will be integrated into the meeting by a presymposium “Challenges and Limitations in Metabolic Pathway Engineering of Secondary Natural Products” highlighting the latest insights in biotechnical production of natural products for medicinal applications. In addition to presentation and discussion of excellent research it will be a major goal of this conference to provide a basis for intense networking between scientists of academia and industry from all over the world. The present issue of Planta Medica devoted to the congress was realized by the efficient and excellent work of Dr. Matthias Lechtenberg and by many staff members from the Institute of Pharmaceutical Biology and Phytochemistry. We express our deepest gratitude to all of them for helping us to publish high quality abstracts in this volume. One major aspect of research in forensic entomology is the investigation of molecular techniques for the accurate identification of insects. Studies to date have addressed the corpse fauna of many geographical regions, but generally neglected the southern African calliphorid species. In this study, forensically significant calliphorids from South Africa, Swaziland, Botswana and Zimbabwe and Australia were sequenced over an 1167 base pair region of the COI gene. Phylogenetic analysis was performed to examine the ability of the region to resolve species identities and taxonomic relationships between species. Analyses by neigh- bour-joining, maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood methods all showed the potential of this region to provide the necessary species-level identifications for application to post-mortem interval (PMI) estimation; however, higher level taxonomic relationships did vary according to method of analysis. Intraspecific variation was also considered in relation to determining suitable maximum levels of variation to be expected during analysis. Individuals of some species in the study represented populations from both South Africa and the east coast of Australia, yet maximum intraspecific variation over this gene region was calculated at 0.8%,with minimum interspecific variation at 3%, indicating distinct ranges of variation to be expected at intra- and interspecific levels.

Pérez-García, Agustín Lahora, María E. Merlo and Juan F. Mota Abstract The habitat arborescent matorral with Ziziphus (5220*) was included in the Habitats Directive of the European Commission. These plant formations represent the maximum potential vegetation in a very restrictive arid environment, since it encompasses endemic, tropical, or Maghrebian floristic elements, and from other areas of the ancient Thetis Sea. In fact, the version of this community with Gymnosporia senegalensis (Lam.) Loes. [=Maytenus senegalensis (Lam.) Exell] constitutes extraordinarily singular flora formations in the Iberian southeast. These are unique communities in Europe and ecologically extremely valuable and, however, have been included among the Europe’s most endangered habitats. The vast economic development experienced in South Spain based on the remarkable transformation of traditional farming patterns into a highly profitable agriculture that uses industrial production methods and the groundwater intensively (agri- culture intensification and land-use change), in addition to urbanization without sustainable land planning, determines that European G. senegalensis populations are seriously threatened by severe habitat destruction and fragmentation. Accepted 24 March, 2009 This paper presents the results of an assessment of the ethnobotanical uses of some plants recorded in upper Nyong valley forest implemented by the Cameroon wildlife conservation society project (CWCS). Forestry transects in 6 localities, followed by socio-economic study were conducted in 250 local inhabitants. As results, medicinal information on 140 plants species belonging to 60 families were recorded. Local people commonly use plant parts which included leaves, bark, seed, whole plant, stem and flower to cure many diseases. According to these plants, 8% are use to treat malaria while 68% intervenes to cure several others diseases as described on. There is very high demand for medicinal plants due to prevailing economic recession; however their prices are high as a result of prevailing genetic erosion. This report highlighted the need for the improvement of effective management strategies focusing on community forestry programmes and aims to encourage local people participation in the conservation of this forest heritage to achieve a sustainable plant biodiversity and conservation for future posterity.

Dadoura Abstract A proliferation of molecular studies of the forensically significant Calliphoridae in the last decade has seen molecule-based identification of immature and damaged specimens become a routine complement to traditional morphological identification as a preliminary to the accurate estimation of post-mortem intervals (PMI), which depends on the use of species-specific developmental data. Published molecular studies have tended to focus on generating data for geographically localised communities of species of importance, which has limited the consideration of intraspecific variation in species of global distribution. This study used phylogenetic analysis to assess the species status of 27 forensically important calliphorid species based on 1167 base pairs of the COI gene of 119 specimens from 22 countries, and confirmed the utility of the COI gene in identifying most species. The species Lucilia cuprina, Chrysomya megacephala, Ch. saffranea, Ch. albifrontalis and Calliphora stygia were unable to be monophyletically resolved based on these data. Identification of phylogenetically young species will require a faster-evolving molecular marker, but most species could be unambiguously characterised by sampling relatively few conspecific individuals if they were from distant localities. Intraspecific geographical variation was observed within Ch. rufifacies and L. cuprina, and is discussed with reference to unrecognised species. 1. WILSON Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, 1500 North College Avenue, Claremont, California 91711-3157, USA (carol. wilson@ cgu. edu) ABSTRACT Subgeneric groups have been circumscribed in Iris based on a small number of morphological characters. Recent DNA sequence data has indicated that several of the subgenera, sections, and series that have previously been delineated are paraphyletic or polyphyletic. The evolution of characters that have traditionally been used to distinguish sub generic and sectional groups within Iris was investigated by mapping these characters on a phylogenetic tree based on matK sequence data. Results indicate that rhizomes are pleisomorphic for the genus and that three bulb types have arisen independently. My analysis shows that sepal beards, sepal crests, and seed arils show extensive homoplasy. Most of the homoplasy seen is associated with the circumscription of polyphyletic subgeneric groups such as the beardless subgenus Limniris. Some additional homoplasy is due to diversity within supported clades or the historical use of a single character in circumscribing more than one subgeneric group.
