Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala, India Abstract Screening of 16 medicinal plants for potential anti-inflammatory activity through the dual inhibition of Prakash Kumar B cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes (synthesis of eicosanoids) and the evaluation of the Associate Professor, School of phytochemicals in the plants exhibiting dual inhibition were carried out. The plant extracts were Biosciences, Mahatma Gandhi preincubated with the enzyme and assayed for LOX and COX activity by ELISA method. Plants with University, Kottayam, Kerala, dual inhibition were subject to phytochemical analysis so as to determine the secondary metabolites India present in these plants. Seven plants were identified with dual inhibition of LOX and COX enzymes. Saponins and terpenoids were found to be present in all the plant extracts with dual inhibition. The findings of the present study indicate the potential of seven medicinal plants in the use as anti- inflammatory agents. Further studies are being conducted to determine the bioactive molecules involved in the process of dual inhibition of LOX and COX. Introduction Chronic inflammation is characterized by prolonged and persistent infection with massive tissue damage and destruction. A planta tem sido usada na medicina tradicional como analgésico para dores de ouvido e abdominais por "caboclos" de comunidades tradicionais rurais do estado do Pará, Brasil. No entanto, a ingestão da planta foi associada com a ocorrência de aborto em vacas. Além disso, a planta foi relatada por promover efeitos neurólogicos em camundongos. A análise fitoquímica das folhas de P. colorata revelou a presença de vários alcalóides pirrolidinoindolínicos, incluindo psicotridina, hodgkinsina, isocalicantina e calicantina, os quais estariam relacionados à atividade farmacológica e tóxica da planta. ABSTRACT Psychotria colorata popularly known as pérpetua do mato and repolho, is a plant of the family Rubiaceae widespread in South America, is found in Amazonian region of Brazil. The plant have been used in traditional medicine as painkiller for earache, abdominal pain by “caboclos” of traditional rural communities from the state of Pará, Brazil.

Estudos para este taxa são relevantes para fins conservacionistas e econômicos, propõe-se com este trabalho mostrar a importância da família para conservação. O compilamento bibliográfico abrangeu publicações que contemplassem distribuição, morfoanatomia, biologia reprodutiva, fenologia, dispersão e polinização, germinação e prospecção fitoquímica de espécies de Rubiaceae no Brasil. Rubiaceae se destaca como um dos principais componentes de sub-bosques e é bem representada em diversas formações vegetacionais. Sua morfoanatomia está correlacionada a estratégias de adaptação ao ambiente onde ocorre e por isso serve como subsídio taxonômico. Outra estratégia de adaptação ao ambiente é a poliploidia que permite a fecundação cruzada e a manutenção da variabilidade genética e fluxo gênico de suas espécies as quais atuam como fontes de recursos para a fauna, que se beneficia com pólen, néctar e frutos. Uma vez que estudos botânicos, químicos e farmacológicos podem subsidiar a descoberta de novos marcadores taxonômicos e/ou produção de novos fármacos, o uso sustentável destas espécies, bem como a conservação dos habitats onde estas se distribuem são fundamentais tanto para economia quanto para a manutenção do equilíbrio dos ecossistemas.

Methods: This study was conducted in the Community of the Wajãpi Indigenous People, a Brazilian territory located in the central western State of Amapá. Wajãpi women were selected for the interview since they have the responsibility to harvest, collect and prepare the preparations. The studied women were residents of four villages. The number of women within these four villages is 24. Results and conclusions: The findings fell into the following three categories: 1) The daily use of medicinal plants by women and main methods of application. In this category, the botanical families found included Leguminosae- Caesalpinoideae, Anacardiaceae, Meliaceae, and Rubiaceae. The main forms of use found were teas, baths, maceration, in natura, and juices; 2) Through analysis of illness and treatment records, a lack of knowledge integration in the health system was shown to

It reports the review of phytochemical studies addressing all species of Rubiaceae, published between 1990 and 2014. Iridoids, anthraquinones, triterpenes, indole alkaloids as well as other varying alkaloid subclasses, have shown to be the most common. These compounds have been mostly isolated from the genera Uncaria, Psychotria, Hedyotis, Ophiorrhiza and Morinda. The occurrence and distribution of iridoids, alkaloids and anthraquinones point out their chemotaxonomic correlation among tribes and subfamilies. From an evolutionary point of view, Rubioideae is the most ancient subfamily, followed by Ixoroideae and finally Cinchonoideae. The chemical biosynthetic pathway, which is not so specific in Rubioideae, can explain this and large amounts of both iridoids and indole alkaloids are produced. In Ixoroideae, the most active biosysthetic pathway is the one that produces iridoids; while in Cinchonoideae, it produces indole alkaloids together with other alkaloids. The chemical biosynthetic pathway now supports this botanical conclusion.
