BIAWAK Quarterly Journal of Varanid Biology and Husbandry Volume 4 Number 2 ISSN: 1936-296X On the Cover: Varanus obor Varanus obor is the most recent species of monitor lizard to be described from Indonesia. Discovered by Weijola and Sweet (2010. A new melanistic species of monitor [Reptilia: Squa- mata: Varanidae] from Sanana Island, Indone- sia. Zootaxa 2434: 17-32.), V. obor also repre- sents the most recently described member of the V. indicus complex. Data and observations on its natural history and ecology are included within the species description. The specimens depicted on the cover and inset of this issue were photographed by Valter Wei- jola on Sanana Island, Maluku, Indonesia on 28 March and 3 April 2009. The specimen depicted on the cover and to the left was observed around 1600 h in a coastal Sago area of northeastern Sanana. The specimen depicted below was first observed foraging in coastal vegetation, but as- cended a coconut palm when it noticed the ob- server. Mr. Darwin's voyage in the Beagle is a model of what such a book should be; and Mr. Wallace, whose share in supportiug Mr. Darwin's theory is well known, has written an account of his journeys in the Malay Archipelago which may be fairly put beside it. One circumstance about it is sufficiently significant. Mr. Wallace's journeys were spread over eight years, and more than six years have elapsed since his return, owing to ill-health and to the difficulties of arranging his large collections, amounting to over 125,000 specimens. Now it is obvious that had Mr. Wallace followed the example of book-making travellers, and tumbled out upon us voluminous masses of undigested diary and scientific disquisition, be might have composed a work from which the boldest reader would have shrunk in undisguised dismay. On the scale which some recent travellers have adopted, he would have filled a good-sized bookshelf. As it is, he has contented himself with two volumes of moderate size, of which he modestly says that they are" far too small for the extent of the subjects ' treated. Certainly, if it had heen his purpose to give us a hand book to the Archipelago, or an exhaustive disquisition upon its natural products, or even a full account of all his own ad ventures, the space would have been ridiculously small. -

Diese Muster wurden mit verschiede- nen biologischen Charakteristika verknüpft und mit denen von freilebenden Tieren verglichen. Der Bre- itengrad des natürlichen Verbreitungsgebietes korreliert stark mit dem in Menschenobhut beobachteten BPB. Nur 11% der Spezies wechselten ihr reproduktives Muster zwischen Wildnis und Gefangenschaft, wobei für saisonale Spezies die errechnete Tageslichtlänge zum Zeitpunkt der Konzeption für freilebende und in Menschenobhut gehaltene Populationen gleich war. Reproduktive Saisonalität erklärt zusätzliche Varianzen im Verhältnis von Körpergewicht und Tragzeit, wobei saisonalere Spezies für ihr Körpergewicht eine kürzere Tragzeit aufweisen. Rückschliessend ist festzuhalten, dass Photoperiodik, speziell die abso- lute Tageslichtlänge, genetisch fixierter Auslöser für die Fortpflanzung ist, und dass die Plastizität der Tragzeit unterstützend auf die erfolgreiche Verbreitung der Wiederkäuer in höheren Breitengraden wirkte. A dataset on 110 wild ruminant species kept in captivity in temperate-zone zoos was used to describe their reproductive patterns quantitatively (determining the birth peak breadth BPB as the number of days in which 80% of all births occur); then this pattern was linked to various biological characteristics, and compared with free-ranging animals. Globally, latitude of natural origin highly correlates with BPB observed in captivity, with species being more seasonal originating from higher latitudes. -

The relations between the patterns of discontinuous gas exchange cycles (DGCs) and water loss were investigated in non- chilled diapausing pupae of the white cabbage butterfly Pieris brassicae kept at room temperature (22–24°C) in Petri dishes. An electrolytic respirometer, combined with an infrared (IR) actographic device was used for the simultaneous recordings of metabolic rate, cyclic release of carbon dioxide (bursts), passive suction inspirations (PSIs) and body movements. The patterns of cyclic gas exchange in four- and five-month-old non-chilled diapausing pupae varied individually to a considerable extent. About 40% of the pupae displayed long DGCs lasting 1–3 h, while the interburst periods were characterised by rare and almost regular large PSIs suc- ceeding at intervals of 1–4 min. Nearly 30% of the pupae exhibited short DGCs lasting 3–5 min, while between the bursts there occurred unclear frequent gas exchange microcycles. Standard metabolic rate (SMR) did not reveal significant differences between –1 –1 –1 –1 long DGCs and short DGCs ranging from 32–56 (mean 47.6 ± 4.6) ml O2 g h , and 28–61 (mean 44.95 ± 5.3) ml O2 g h , respec- tively. -

BIAWAK Journal of Varanid Biology and Husbandry Volume 13 Number 2 ISSN: 1936-296X On the Cover: Varanus macraei The Blue tree monitors, Varanus mac- raei depicted on the cover and inset of this issue were hatched on 14 No- vember 2019 at Bristol Zoo Gardens (BZG) and are the first of their spe- cies to hatch at a UK zoological in- stitution. Two live offspring from an original clutch of four eggs hatched after 151 days of incubation at a tem- perature of 30.5 °C. The juveniles will remain on dis- play at BZG until they are eventually transferred to other accredited Euro- pean Association of Zoos & Aquari- ums (EAZA) institutions as part of the zoo breeding programme. "Estrus" or Oestrus refers to the "heat" stage of that cycle when the mare is receptive to the stallion "Diestrus" (diœstrus) Period in between the estrus phases when the mare is not receptive to the stallion "Anestrus" (anœstrus) Compete absence of estrus. Long Day Breeder The mare is a "seasonally polyestrus" animal undergoes regular estrus cycles during a portion of the year (late spring, summer and early fall) Not in winter. This is nature's way of preventing the arrival of a foal during bad weather. 3 Signs of Estrus • Vulva become large and swollen, scarlet or orange colour, wet, glossy, covered with mucous. • Labial folds Loose • Vaginal mucosa highly vascular • Tail raised. • Urine expelled in small amount frequently • Clitoris is exposed by prolonged rhythmic contraction Known as Winking of clitoris • Ovulatory Cycle 21 days • Luteal phase= 14 days • Follicular or estrous phase = 7 days 4 Long Duration Estrus in Mare It may be due to Ovary surrounded by serous coat and takes longer time for migration of follicles to reach the ovulation fossa to rupture. Preovulatory follicle requires longer time to reach maximal size (due to less sensitiveness of ovary with exogenous FSH) Low level of LH delays ovulation 5 Ovulation • Most ovulations days 3, 4,or 5 of estrus, 24 to 48 hours before the end of behavioral estrus • Time of ovulation is more closely related to the end than to the onset of estrus.
