While the early foundations for such a global instrument can be traced back to IUCN resolutions from the early 1960’s, the final impetus for a convention came from Recommendation 99 of the Action Plan for the Human Environment adopted in Stockholm in 1972 at the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. This recommendation included a call for the preparation and adoption of a global treaty to regulate international trade in certain species of wild plants and animals and CITES was adopted the following year at the ‘World Wildlife Conference’ in Washington D.C. Forty years later at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), governments placed CITES among the 283 paragraphs of final outcome document of the meeting, The Future We Want, to indicate the Convention’s continuing relevance to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and to sustainable development. Paragraph of the document 203 reads: We recognize the important role of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, an international agreement that stands at the intersection between trade, the environment and development, promotes the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, should contribute to tangible benefits for local people, and ensures that no species entering into international trade is threatened with extinction. We recognize the economic, social and environmental impacts of illicit trafficking in wildlife, where firm and strengthened action needs ton be take on both the supply and demand sides. In this regard, we emphasize the importance of effective international cooperation among relevant multilateral environmental agreements and international organizations. We further stress the importance of basing the listing of species on agreed criteria. CITES is unique among many biodiversity multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) in that it produces primary data that may be used to develop early warning indicators of unsustainable levels of international trade in species. The CITES trade data, currently holds details of 12,000,000 trade transactions. It is growing by over 850,000 records a year and it provides a basis for monitoring the effective implementation of CITES, including through the Review of Significant Trade. It is within the context of the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity that the CITES Secretariat commissioned the report on CITES Trade: recent trends in international trade in Appendix II‐listed species (1996‐2010). This report is based on CITES trade data, and will be the first of a number of publications planned to assist Parties gain access to the knowledge needed to manage wildlife trade sustainably. The report aims to improve understanding of how CITES can help to ensure that the use of wildlife is sustainable and how it can contribute tangible benefits for local people. The Secretariat is most grateful to the European Commission for the generous funding that made the publication of this Report possible. John E. Scanlon Secretary‐General 1 Key findings This report provides an analysis of trends (1996‐2010) in international trade in species included in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna (CITES). Overall volumes of trade in CITES Appendix II live animals and plants peaked in 2000 and 2006, respectively (Figures 1 and 2) with a decline seen since then.

Background The attached draft resolution is intended to replace the existing criteria for listing species in the appendices of the Convention, for transferring species between the appendices and for deletion of species from the appendices. General issues International trade 1. CITES was established to address international trade in wild fauna and flora. It is unable to influence the survival of species which are not exploited for trade or species which are exploited within States for domestic consumption. Perhaps the greatest threat to species is the loss or fragmentation of habitats in the countries where they occur: this problem has to be addressed through other measures. International trade may be one of the less important factors influencing the survival of the majority of species and this should be recognized. CITES is an international conservation treaty with a circumscribed role limited to those species which are genuinely threatened with extinction, or which could become so, in which there is significant international trade.

    CONVENTION ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN ENDANGERED SPECIES OF WILD FAUNA AND FLORA NOTIFICATION TO THE PARTIES No. 2018/031 Geneva, 26 March 2018 CONCERNING: INDIA Ban on trade in wild fauna and flora, except certain specimens of Dalbergia latifolia and Dalbergia sissoo 1. The Management Authority of India has informed the Secretariat that the Government of India has banned the export for commercial purposes of all wild-taken specimens of species included in Appendices I, II and III, subject to paragraph 2 below. 2. India permits the export of cultivated varieties of plant species included in Appendices I and II and has indicated that all products, other than the wood and wood products in the form of logs, timber, stumps, roots, bark, chips, powder, flakes, dust and charcoal, produced from wild sourced (W) Dalbergia sissoo and Dalbergia latifolia and authorized for export by a CITES Comparable Certificate issued by the competent authorities of India are exempted from the general ban. Such Dalbergia sissoo and Dalbergia latifolia specimens are harvested legally as per the regional and national laws of India and as per the prescribed management (working) plans, which are based on silvicultural principles and all are covered under Legal Procurement Certificate; all the material are sold from the Government timber depots through auction or are legally procured and can be exported legally. 3. Starting on the date of this Notification, all the CITES Comparable Certificates will be issued with a footnote, stating that the wild (W) source specimens are covered under Legal Procurement Certificate as per regional and national laws in India.

The eastern Peninsular Malaysian population has been described as the subspecies mollumar d’Abrera, Doggett & Parker, 1976, but its status as a subspecies distinguishable from the taxon trogon (Vollenhoven, 1860) in Sumatra has been disputed. Wing characters and measurements of specimens from the two regions were therefore examined quantitatively using discriminant function and correspondence analyses. Eastern Peninsular specimens differ on average from Sumatran specimens in having more extensive green, especially in the female. This is reflected in many of the measurements and characters analysed.

Puddling behavior of butterflies and moths is a well-known phenomenon driven by a deficit of several minerals and nutrients in larval and imago diet, especially sodium and proteins (Arms et al. 1974; Adler 1982; Boggs and Jackson 1991; Beck et al. 1999; John & Tennent 2012; Inoue et al. 2012). In particular, sodium and albumin were found to be the most attractive puddling resources for tropical butterflies on Borneo based on the results of a long-term experimental study (Beck et al. 1999). This kind of behavior is more characteristic for males, while female butterfly puddling occurs only occasionally (Beck et al. 1999; Adler & Pearson 1982; Scriber 1987, 2002; John & Tennent 2012; John & Dennis 2019). Male puddling could increase reproductive success in butterflies because minerals and nutrients are transferred through the spermatophore at mating (Boggs & Gilbert 1979; Pivnick & McNeil 1987; Smedley & Eisner 1996; Dennis et al. 2014; Mitra et al. 2016). However it is paradoxical to notice that their formation at the cellular level or even at the scale of the organism is still poorly known. Effectively, biomineralisation, the process that is at the basis of their edification, is always the subject of numerous researches. Two combined mechanisms lead to the formation of a biomineral, the synthesis/secretion of macromolecules referred to as ‘organic matrix’, and the transport of ions (calcium, bicarbonates and protons in the case of calcification) to the mineralising site. This review shows a view of the works carried out on biominerali- sation in scleractinian corals, including some aspects on the control of calcification by environmental parameters. It also gives insights into the biological basis of the use of coral skeletons as environmental archives in palaeo-oceanography.
