Linz Changes Groups #visitlinz EXPERIENCE THE FUTURE IN THE UNESCO City of Media Arts DISCOVER UNIQUE CULTURE on the Danube LINZ CHANGES GROUPS 2019 EDITION www.linztourismus.at/groups Incredibly contemporary, Upper Austria 1 In Linz on the Danube, culture meets vitality Linz on the Danube really is for anyone who is open to new experiences and lives in the here and now. The unique character of the city is just waiting to be discovered. The strength of the river and the easy-going nature of the city’s inhabitants exist side by side. The vibrant museums and the his- torical Old Town perfectly complement each other because of their differences. Almost as surreal are the boat trips along the harbour’s metre-high graffiti artworks or the industrial tours. These experiences, in all their diversity, encapsulate Linz. Just immersing yourself in this atmosphere once will be enough to have you coming back to the city for years to come. “Linz changes” is not just an empty phrase: the city in the centre of Upper Austria is always reinven- ting itself, while at the same time remaining authentic and looking towards the future. An important milestone in the city’s development was its designation as Capital of Culture 2009 – 2019 is the tenth anniversary of this event. Linz is also proud to hold the title of UNESCO City of Media Arts, something which visitors can really experience when they’re here. The fact that the city also enga- ges with the past in a contemporary manner and translates this into the present led the European Commission to further acknowledge Linz in 2018 with the “European Smart Tourism Award” in the “Cultural Heritage & Creativity” category. This just goes to show that another of Linz’s strengths is making historical cultural heritage accessible through creative approaches. Explore Linz together Organising a group trip to the city of the future really is the epitome of the zeitgeist. The diversity, short distances and authentic experiences will excite all those taking part. They will be surprised and amazed. And, thus, you will remember your group trip to Linz for a long time, with all its culture and incredible moments. 2 Gruppenerlebnis 2019 Übersicht p. 6–7 01 Event Highlights 2019 p. 8–9 02 Overview of the Year p. 10–12 03 City Sights p. 14–17 04 Museums p. 18–21 05 The Danube in Upper Austria p. 21, 30, 53 & U4 06 Group Packages The Danube – pure pleasure! If it is your first time in the city, let yourself be carried away by the open atmosphere of the city centre, by the buildings from a huge variety of eras, by the diverse cultural offerings and by the Danube, which is a part of Linz now more than ever. What sets this city apart from others is its character and its constant evolution. A particular turning point was 2009, when Linz became the European Capital of Culture. The list of new openings around that time is impressive, from the Schlossmuseum to the voestalpine Stahlwelt, the Ars Electronica Center and the Pöst- lingbergbahn Hauptplatz extension. Another legacy of Linz09 is the Musiktheater, which was opened in 2013 and is one of the most modern opera houses in Europe. The ideas, projects and initiatives from the Capital of Culture year still excite visitors and residents alike. Immerse yourself in the city of change In Linz, the banks of the Danube are a place of relaxation and culture: the green areas and res- taurants invite you to linger during the day and at night the futuristic, illuminated façades of the museums are guaranteed to amaze. Equally impressive are the exhibitions, which range from the contemporary works in the Lentos Art Museum to the innovative developments and pro- jects in the Ars Electronica Center. In the Museum of the Future, technological forward-thin- king meets visionary media art. Further downstream in the industrial harbour is an art project of a different kind: “Mural Harbor” is Europe’s largest graffiti and muralismo gallery with around 200 spray-painted works along the harbour. And in the nearby industrial area the voestalpine Stahlwelt offers a unique look behind the scenes. Although its constant change and forward-looking nature are what give Linz its identity, people are always the central focus in the UNESCO City of Media Arts. Anyone who is curious and open will have an unforgettable time in the city on the Danube, enjoy new experiences and see for themselves the change which characterises this city. 4 5 01 Events Events highlights 2019 THEATER / KONZERTE BRUCKNERHAUS more info on page 26 CLASSICS AT THE CATHEDRAL Das Orchester tanzt Katie Melua & Band 12 Jul. 19 29 Mar. 19, 7.30 pm, Filarmónica Joven de Columbia with Andrés Orozco-Estrada Rolando Villazon with the Salzburg Philharmonic 13 Jul. 19 Mahler’s 8th Symphony 21 May & 22 May 19, 7.30 pm, Konstantin Wecker eight star soloists, three choirs, Bruckner Orchestra Linz with the Bavarian Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra 19 Jul. 19 Serenades in the Landhaus 2 Jul.–27 Aug. 19 FESTIVALS Visualised Klangwolke (cloud of sound) Ars Electronica Festival 7 Sep. 19 5–9 Sep. 19 Children’s Klangwolke International Brucknerfest Linz 2019 8 Sep. 19 4 Sep.–11 Oct. 19 Classical Klangwolke Linz Organ Summer in the Mariendom 28 Sep. 19 4 Jul.–5 Sep. 19 SCHÄXPIR – Theatre Festival For a Young Audience BRUCKNER ORCHESTRA LINZ more info on page 28 24 Jun.–30 Jun. 19 Poschner trifft… Markus Poschner trifft Christine Haiden OÖ KULTURQUARTIER more info on page 15 7 Jan. 19, 7.30 pm, OK in the OÖ Kulturquartier Poschner trifft… Markus Poschner trifft Meinhard Lukas NEXTCOMIC Festival 24 Apr. 19, 6 pm, JKU – Teichwerk 14–23 Mar. 19 Masterclass - Der Fantasie sind keine Grenzen gesetzt CROSSING EUROPE European Film Festival 30 Mar. 19, 11 am, Musiktheater 25–30 Apr. 19 Weit über Linz - Gedankenflüge und Gehörgänge CYBERARTS Prix Ars Electronica Exhibition 6 May 19, 7.30 pm, JKU Festival 5–15 Sep. 19 BOLWERK – Das BOL zum Angreifen 6 Jul. 19, Tabakfabrik Linz MUSIKTHEATER more info on page 28 EVENTS Elektra Urfahr Spring Market Opera by Richard Strauss, 19 Jan. 19 – premiere 27 Apr.–7 May 19, Urfahrmarktgelände Ragtime Musical by Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens and Terrence LINZ AG BUBBLEDAYS MacNally, 8 Feb. 19 – premiere 7, 8, 9 Jun. 19, Linz Harbour Penthesilea Musical Days in the Landestheater Linz Opera by Othmar Schoeck, 2 Mar. 19 – premiere 8–10 Jun. 19 Marie Antoinette Nature Festival Dance performance by Mei Hong Lin, 30 Mar. 19 – premiere 15 Jun. 19, Volksgarten Médée UFERN Danube Beach Festival Opera by Luigi Cherubini, 4 May 19 – premiere 28–29 Jun. 19, Alturfahr Familienbund Knights’ Festival POSTHOF more info on page 27 6 Jul. 19, Schloss/Hauptplatz TanzTage Night of the Family Mar./Apr. 19 12 Jul. 19, museums and various other institutions Bilderbuch-Ahoi!
