Reining is a natural evolution of western ranch life. In the early years, and rider had to be a team, with each sharing a close bond. These had to be intelligent, athletic, quick and agile. They had to be extremely responsive to a very light rein.

Cowboys took pride in their hard working, well-trained horses. Challenges often arose as to who had the best horse. These impromptu challenges were the basis for today’s reining competitions.

Today’s reining competitions provide a venue for hundred’s of riders to demonstrate the skills of their highly trained horses. To rein a horse is not only to guide it, but also to control its every movement.

Reining is often referred to as ‘Western ’. Some of the movements maybe similar to English dressage, but they’re executed at a much faster pace: fast spins, roll-backs and dramatic sliding stops inevitably thrill the spectators.

• REINING was demonstrated at the Atlanta and Sydney Olympic Games. • REINING is an equestrian sport open to all breeds. • REINING Canada teams won two gold medals and one silver in international competitions during 2001. • REINING includes classes to challenge technical, as well as artistic skills. Freestyle Reining choreographs reining manoeuvres to music. • REINING is the first Western discipline to be accepted by the FEI and in 2002 was a recognized event at the World Equestrian Games in Spain, where Canada won Silver. • REINING is part of the Canadian Equestrian Team and competes in the Nations Cup at the Tournament of Champions in New Jersey. • REINING in Ontario provides competitors with Canada Cup Qualifiers and Youth Medal classes. • REINING shows in Ontario are approved by ORHA, Reining Canada, and NRHA.
