Gamecock Equestrian... The Pattern For Winning Known as the first major school in the country to sponsor equestrian, Gamecock Equestrian enters its 11th year of ex- istence. Since its beginnings in 1997, the program continues to thrive and develop into one of the best in the country. USC’s first national honor came in 2004 when standout Tara Brothers won the most coveted individual award from the Intercollegiate Show Association (IHSA), the IHSA Hunter Seat National Title, also known as the Cacchione Cup. Under the reign of head coach Boo Duncan, on April 16, 2005, USC brought home its first national title in Varsity Equestrian, as South Carolina tallied 60 points to edge out rival opponent Georgia. Held at the Santa Fe Horse Park in New Mexico, the Gamecocks won the Hunt Seat Division with 40 points and the Western team totaled 20 points for a fifth-place fin- ish. In 2006, the Hunt Seat team recorded a repeat performance and won its second consecutive national title at the Varsity Equestrian National Cham- pionships held in Albuquerque, N.M. The Gamecocks defeated Auburn for the title, 906-853. Overall, USC was named Co-Reserve Champion, tying

with Oklahoma State for second-place. The 2005 National Championship Team In 2007, the Gamecocks again set the bar for excellence by bringing home the program’s second national title in three years and third consecutive Hunter Seat title. Held in Waco, Texas, the Hunter Seat team outscored its three VENC opponents 20-3. The Western Team was named Reserve Champion. In addition, the Hunter Seat team went undefeated throughout the season - 15-0 - en route to the title. South Carolina continues to set a standard in equestrian and has proven to be a national contender each year. As one of the benchmark programs in the history of the sport, South Carolina is a reason that Varsity Equestrian is a step closer to full NCAA sponsorship. With Coach Duncan, her staff and South Carolina’s commitment to equestrian, The 2006 National Hunter Seat Championship Team the pattern for winning begins with the Gamecocks.

2007-08 Outlook Gamecock Equestrian enters its 11th season in 2007-08 as one of the premier programs in the country and looks to build upon its success under head coach Boo Duncan. The first major school to sponsor the sport, South Carolina has grown into one of the top programs in the country after winning the overall National Championship in both 2005 and 2007. In addition, the Hunter Seat team has won three consecutive National Champion titles, and the Gamecocks hope to continue the trend with another strong team in 2008. Expected to lead the Hunter Seat team are senior co-captain Kristen Terebesi (Glenmoore, Pa.) and sophomores Megan Massaro (Summerfield, Fla.) and Nicole Bourgeois (Sherwood, Ore.). All three were members of the 2007 national championship team, while Terebesi has been a member of three consecutive Hunt Seat National Championship teams. In addition, sophomore Carly Babcock (Deer Harbor, Wash.) and junior Lindsay Pace (Camden, S.C.) should help lead the Gamecocks. Babcock went 6-1 and was a member of the Southern Equestrian Championships team. Pace was a member of the past two championship Hunt Seat teams and has yet to lose in postseason competition, going 9-0 over the past two seasons at the S.E.C.’s and Varsity Equestrian National Championships. The Hunter Seat team will add four newcomers for the 2007-08 season. Sopho- more Eleanor Kunsman (Flemington, N.J.) is expected to immediately contrib- ute to the team. Kunsman transfers to South Carolina from Centenary College (N.J.) where she was the 2007 Individual Collegiate American National Riding Commission Champion. She finished seventh at the 2006 USEF Medal Finals and helped lead Centenary to a second place finish at the ANRC Intercollegiate Riding Championships. Luci Laffitte (Beaufort, S.C.) will look to add depth in on the flat while Kunsman will help with equitation over fences, a unit that returns all four members that combined to score 11 of 12 possible points at the national championships. Victoria Middleton (Marietta, Ga.) will also provide depth, as she comes to Carolina with numerous awards and cham- pionships, including being named the Equitation Year End Reserve Champion in both the SCHJA Circuit 15-17 and NCHJA Circuit 15-17. “We lost a lot of seniors in the hunt seat, but we have a lot of freshman that Kristen Terebesi can step up for us,” Duncan said. “We were very strong in jumping last year, especially at Nationals. ” On the Western team, Coach Duncan and Western coach, Ruth Sorrel, are looking to seniors Allison Bradley (Lancaster, Calif.) Lindsay Williams (Sand Springs, Okla.) and junior Katie Grossnickle (Winona Lake, Ind.) to lead the team with the loss of heralded rider Rachel Sternoff. All three were members of the Reserve National Champion Western Team last season. Bradley posted a 6-2 record at the VENC’s, going 3-1 in both and horsemanship. Grossnickle was one of Caroli- na’s most consistent Western riders, going 10-4 with a stretch that included seven consecutive victories. Williams will serve as a team co-captain after participating at nationals the past three seasons. Like the Hunter Seat team, the Western team will add four newcomers to its roster. Leading the way is Chloe Gray (Tam- pa, Fla.). Gray’s accomplishments include being named the No. 1 ranked rider in the Florida Reining Horse Association Youth 14-18 category. She finished fifth nationally in the 2007 National Reining Horse Association Youth 14-18 standings and won five FRHA championships from 2003 to 2007. Hailey Thornton (Mishawaka, Ind.), the 2006 All American Quarter Horse Congress Youth Champion will also provide help in horseman- ship. “We will be a lot stronger in reining,” Duncan said. “We’ve got really sharp freshman reiners coming in that will make an immediate impact on our team.” The team will have plenty of opportunities to test their abilities with a strong schedule slated for the Gamecocks. Carolina opens the season Sept. 22 at home against TCU. After a trip to Auburn, Carolina hosts South Dakota State for the second time before heading on the road for what could be its toughest road trip of the season. The Gamecocks compete Lindsay Williams against Oklahoma State on Saturday, Oct. 27, before traveling to Manhat- tan, Kan., the next day to compete at Kansas State. The fall schedule concludes with familiar foe, Georgia. Carolina opens the spring at home against New Mexico State and Auburn before traveling for another date against Geor- gia. The regular season concludes with a trip to Fairfield, Conn., where the Gamecocks will compete against Sacred Heart and Delaware State. The Gamecocks will host the Southern Equestrian Championships from March 27-29. The Varsity Equestrian Nationals will be held April 16-19 in Waco, Texas. “Our schedule is tough this year,” Duncan said. “We have Oklahoma State and Kansas State the same weekend, and they are both very strong teams. Auburn will be much stronger this year, and Georgia is always good. We’ll be hosting the S.E.C.’s as well which will be good to be at home on our own turf.” 2007-08 South Carolina Equestrian 2005, 2006, 2007 Hunt Seat National Champions 2005 and 2007 Overall National Champions

2006-07 Review

South Carolina has set the standard for excellence in the sport of equestrian over the last decade, and the 2006-2007 season was no exception. The season began with two straight wins over Baylor and the defending National Champion Auburn Tigers and ended with their second National Championship in three years. The Hunt Seat finished this season as the only undefeated team in the na- tion with a sterling 15-0 record, earning their third consecutive national title. The Western team had its most impressive showing of the season at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships (VENC’s) as they defeated TCU, Georgia, and Oklahoma State before falling to Texas A&M in the Championship Round. The three consecutive wins improved their record to 6-8 and earned the team the title of Reserve Champions. South Carolina posted victories over Baylor (11-9) and Auburn (12-7) before falling to the Bulldogs (6-9). The team quickly rebounded from the loss and went on a 4-0 run, defeating Fresno State (10-10; 1312.5-1295.5), Stephen F. Austin State University (14-5), Oklahoma State University (12-8), and New Mexico State University (11-8). The team tied to the second competition with Auburn (10-10) but the Tigers edged South Carolina with a raw score of 1386-1395.5. The Gamecocks rode their way to a three- competition streak to close out the regular season. The highlight of that streak was the commanding 15-4 victory over undefeated Georgia. The victory over the Bulldogs marked the fifth straight win of the season at OneWood Farm and was undefeated at home. The team closed out the regular season in the state of Texas as they defeated TCU and SMU. Once the regular season concluded, the Gamecocks entered post-season competition at the Southern Equestrian Championships (SEC’s) where they had the opportunity to ride against Southeastern Conference foes Georgia and Auburn. South Carolina faced Auburn in the first round and as seen in the regular season, the competition proved to be a close one. The Tigers edged USC 10-9, sending the Gamecocks back to Columbia, to prepare for the VENC’s, which were hosted by Baylor in Waco, Texas. The Hunter Seat team earned the No. 1 seed following their spectacular season, with the Western Team holding the No. 7 seed out of the 12 seed competition. The two teams faced elite competition at the event, but were up to the challenge as the team combined to defeat the first six teams they faced, earning them their second national title in three years. The Hunt Seat team showed why their impressive riding deserved a No. 1 seed as they outscored their opponents 20-3 during the Championship and 20 of 24 individual contests. Earning a first round bye, the team faced Fresno State for the second time of the season. The team defeated Fresno State 7-1, advancing them to the next round to face Auburn for a fourth time. Although the Tigers held a 2-1 edge over the Gamecocks, the South Carolina Hunt Seat team was a perfect 3-0 against Auburn. The Hunt Seat team sought to improve to 4-0 and did just that with a 7-0 shut out over the Tigers. The impressive victory earned the team the right to compete for their third straight national title. South Carolina faced Georgia for the third time of the season. South Carolina im- proved to 3-0 over UGA with the 6-2 victory. In addition to securing the title, the Gamecocks ended the season with a perfect 15-0 record. The No. 7 seeded Western team succeeded with a daunting task as they entered the VENC’s with a 4-7 mark on the season. The team faced TCU for the second time and rode away with a 5-3 victory before facing rival Georgia in a SEC showdown. The teams tied, but South Carolina edged the Bulldogs 990-980 in the raw score, advancing them to the next round where they competed against Oklahoma State. Once again the score was tied at 4, but South Carolina riders accumulated 1133.5 points compared to the Cowgirls 1120. With the victory, South Carolina’s Western team advanced to the championship round and secured the overall title because USC was the only school to have both the Hunt Seat and Western teams in the championship round. USC faced No. 1 seed Texas A&M in the championship, but dropped the contest 2-6. The 2006-2007 season saw many accomplishments including 25 regular season MVP honors, seven Gamecocks who competed in every competition, a perfect 5-0 season at home, and ultimately an overall National Championship Title, and the third straight Hunt Seat Championship Title. This impressive list of honors and awards proves once again why South Carolina has set the standard of excellence in equestrian.

2006-07 Equestrian Team Academics South Carolina equestrian placed 19 members on the 2007 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll. In the four years since equestrian has been included in the SEC Spring Sports Honor Roll listings, Coach Boo Duncan has placed 59 student-athletes on the list, averaging 14.75 per year. The Gamecocks placed 19 in both 2007 and 2006.

VARSITY EQUESTRIAN

South Carolina competes yearly in the Varsity Equestrian National Championships (VENC), the highest level of compe- tition for collegiate equestrian.

HISTORY OF THE VENC

In 1998, equestrian was classified as an NCAA emerging sport. Many people within the horse industry have united to- gether to help advance the sport to full NCAA championship status. In order to attain this goal and hold a NCAA Equestrian Championship, there must be 40 Division I/II schools that sponsor equestrian as a varsity level program.

Currently 23 colleges and universities offer equestrian as a varsity sport and more continue to add the program each year.

Other information regarding Varsity Equestrian can be obtained at its website, http://www.varsityequestrian.com.
