Imagine building nature inspired, sustainable living spaces which are accessible for everyone...

Team Deeply High believes that our homes can be rebuilt inspired by nature and combining yesterday’s wisdom with today’s technology will allow us to make it doable and accessible to everyone.

Who is Team Deeply High?

“Deeply high” is an international, project group which is formed to participate in Europe that is organised by American Energy Ministry and will be taking place in june 2022. The team’s vision is to develop the most effective and sustainable city models for the future by combining yesterday’s wisdom with today’s technology. Team Deeply High believes this competition is the most prestigious and influential stepping stone to reach this dream.

What Is The Story Behind Team Deeply High?

Aiming to develop, design and plan vernacular architecture in a holistic approach for a sustainable, climate-resilient and socially responsible built environment, The group has been formed after Solar Decathlon Africa in in 2019. With architectural and construction expertise of Technische Hochschule Lübec and energy and sustainability expertise ofIstanbul Technical University, the group intends to combine their strengths into an interdisciplinary, international and harmonious project. The group aims to build sustainable living spaces which are attainable for everyone. When people speak about architecture, it means one aspect of the “built environment” and its vernacular architecture. “Built environment” represents the physical frame for human’s lives: living, educating, producing, trading. We are very clear on this holistic approach and strongly believe that as a group we can create this ecosystem where people live in harmony with nature without sacrificing the benefits of advanced technologies.

Project Description

“Deeply high” is an international, interdisciplinary project group with the aim to develop, design and plan vernacular architecture in a holistic approach for a sustainable, climate-resilient and socially responsible built environment. The group formed after the previous Solar Decathlon Africa in Morocco in 2019. With architectural and construction expertise especially at THL and energy and sustainability expertise especially at ITU the group can combine their fields to an interdisciplinary, international project group. Still, the prospective project disciplines will be developed and elaborated by both groups in order to not only take advantage of each expertise but to learn from each other also with regards to cultural exchange.

With having started into the contest in October 2020, the project and idea development is still in progress. Still, the general concept of construction and design as well as the material, modular and general systematic scale can be presented. When we speak about architecture, it means one aspect of the “built environment” and its vernacular architecture! This “built environment” represents the physical frame for human’s lives: living, educating, producing, trading.

In order to choose one of the three options given we decided to plan and design a vertical extension of an existing building. To realise that we have the option to work on a project between Hamburg and Lübeck – in Großhansdorf. We work on an area with 9 blocks. Because of that we have to consider that there are very strong interdependencies between the single building, its direct and indirect neighbourhood, the geographical and climatic conditions, the social and demographic mixture. In the competition, we seek to address all these aspects in a holistic approach while developing a method that may give architectural, technical and social answers in the urban context. We will provide an adaptable, functional architecture by creating climate and user related opening/closing and adding/ removing of living spaces (closed rooms, atrium, pergola, ...). We also work on appropriate renovation of the existing: respecting energy efficiency and integrating the embodied energy to make them affordable.

In our main and secondary structure, we will integrate local, renewable materials to improve local or regional production and trade. We will also face the permacultural issue: considering an architectural, technical intervention in an universal way, organic elements and water, urban/In-house-farming systems aspects. We provide opportunities to integrate and use small scale self-sufficient food production. To that we think of a multifunctional roof that’s all in one: protection against overheating, surface for capturing solar radiation, regulator of microclimatic conditions (“green roof” or similar), rainwater collection and rain protection.

We also follow the idea of LowTec first: We try to provide the best indoor climate as possible mainly by architectural design and its construction, considering simple, renewable and healthy materials and functional techniques. Moreover, in order to generate a good indoor climate, CO2-sensors and indicators are planned. A system of cooling and heating ventilation and electrical devices that are acting in adaptability to occupants needs will be part of the whole technical building equipment.

We also want to integrate a smart and health water management which include water-saving systems, grey-water use and on-site grey-water treatment. We are thinking about integrating a smart energy administration to deal in an intelligent and healthy way with in producing and providing electricity as an additional energy next to solar energy. E-cars and E-bikes serve as storage and
