www.juajamii.com Preface

This dossier contains information on partnership opportunities supporting Jua Jamii in competing in the first AFRICA to be held in September 2019 at Green Energy Park, BenGuerir, . TEAM Jau Jamii is a Swahili expression which means "solar community". The Jua Jamii team is a DESCRIPTION multidisciplinary team working in an interdisciplinary approach. The jamii is composed of 25 (and growing) talented young Africans enrolled in various Master’s degree courses at the Pan African University Institute of Water and Energy Sciences (PAUWES) and the University of Tlemcen in , Our team members come from eight different countries in Africa representing all five sub-regions of the continent: North, South, East, West and Central. The team boost of gender balance with women occupying strategic positions and offering a valuable contribution towards actualizing the Jau Jamii dream.

This team is dedicated to the Jua dream- which is to design, build and compete in the Solar Decathlon competition in Morocco in 2019. The vision of this team is to become the first Pan African greenhouse construction company, that provides unique architectural design that reflects the African heritage while offering comfort to users in line with international standards. PROJECT JUA JAMII TEAM DESCRIPTION

The Jua House is a cutting-edge solution to the ever-widening housing deficit in Africa. The house has flexible and spacious room setting fitted with localized African materials that give value for money and African experience.

The Jua house is built with recyclable containers, designed with a positive energy building approach. The house is wholly powered by solar with the ability to feed into the grid excess energy produced, thus enabling Jua house owners to earn extra income from the excess energy generated by the house. The Aquaponic system also allows for the cultivating of vegetables and fishery inside the house for self- sustenance. The Heat ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system of the house is also adaptable to bio-climatic architectural design with a well-integrated wastewater management system for living comfort. The entire architecture of the Jua house is inspired by African values and norms, for example, the interior design and decoration of the house resonate the beautiful heritage of all five regions of Africa. This house is also built to help bridge the gap in modern and smart housing needs of Africans. From the construction of the house to its occupancy culminates into achieving 10 Goals (SDGs) as well as the actualization of African Union Agenda 2063 which promotes novelty and environmental sustainability. The involvement of community members in the building process of the Jua House is also an approach to keep intact, the valued African culture through energy efficiency and sustainability awareness

Solar Decathlon AFRICA is an international competition for green buildings, which challenges collegiate teams to design, build and operate grid-connected, attractive and net-zero-energy houses during an eighteen-month period. In the final event of the competition, the teams will assemble their modular houses at the solar village where it will be open to the general public as part of the contests.

Solar Decathlon deals with energy efficiency in buildings technologies, smart home solutions, water conservation measures, electric vehicles, and high-performance building since 2002 where the first JUA JAMII TEAM PARTICIPATION IN SOLAR DECATHLON AFRICA organized decathlon INAUGURATION AT GREEN ENERGY PARK, BENGUERIR- occurred in USA MOROCCO. After seven decathlon competitions around the world, the US Department of Energy in collaboration with the Moroccan Ministry of Energy, Mines and Sustainable Development is organizing the first ever African edition which will be held in September 2019 at Benguerir, Morocco with support from various partners and agencies such as: Research Institute for Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN) and Mohammed VI University.

The biennially competition features two tracks, the Design Challenge (formerly the Race to Zero) and the Build Challenge. Technologies and solutions used in Solar Decathlon homes have advanced the residential building industry both in the United States and abroad. The competition provides a hands-on experience and unique training that prepares the competing students to enter the clean energy workforce. Project milestones
