Salinger’s Shorter Fiction Ritgerð til B.A. – Prófs Daði Guðjónsson Kt.:300881-3359 Leiðbeinandi: Júlían M. D'Arcy Maí 2012 Summary This essay examines J.D. Salinger’s post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from his time in the armed services, as it is apparently portrayed by his character Seymour Glass, through the application of psychoanalytical theories. After reviewing sources on PTSD and Salinger’s early short stories about Sgt. “Babe” Gladwaller, Sergeant X in “For Esmé with Love and Squalor,” and Seymour Glass in “A Perfect Day for Bananafish,” it became evident that all of these characters were suffering from what is now called post-traumatic stress disorder and that Seymour Glass was the severest case; this is evident due to his inability to assimilate into American Post-World War II society, and his desperate attempts at repressing his desires and memories from the war that still haunted him as well his creator. Various secondary sources, articles, texts and books will be used to emphasize the arguments that will be made. The first chapter of this essay will focus on the historical context in which Salinger wrote these stories. The second chapter will focus on post-traumatic stress disorder and its effect on J. D. Salinger. The third chapter will focus on the three elements of Freud’s model of the psyche, the id, the superego, and the ego and why Seymour decided to take his own life. -

J. D. SALINGER’S EXPLORATIONS OF WAR TRAUMA by Jennifer R. Hedges A thesis submitted to the faculty of Radford University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of English Thesis Advisor: Dr. Moira P. Baker May 2020 Copyright 2020, Jennifer R. Hedges ii ABSTRACT The study analyzes the various traumatic experiences of Salinger’s characters during World War II as well as the responses of soldiers enduring these horrific events. Chapter One introduces Salinger’s experiences during WWII as they relate to his exploration of trauma in his fiction. His war experiences illuminate the trauma his characters, and real soldiers, encountered during war. The use of contemporary trauma theory by Judith Herman, Cathy Caruth, and Dominick LaCapra advances my analysis by using their concepts regarding responses, symptoms, and processes of recovery from trauma. Chapter Two utilizes these concepts in a more in-depth way to examine Salinger’s later stories, which illustrate how soldiers in active combat and veterans who have survived war attempt to put their trauma into narrative form, hoping to cope with, understand, and recover from their war experiences. Salinger’s Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut (1948) in rela-tion to its adaptation to the cinema entitled My Foo-lish Heart (1950), regarding the review of literature of both masterpieces and an analysis of specific parts and scenes according to Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of space--temporal relations in literature and arts. The repulse of Salinger to his story’s adaptation and his behavior of reclusiveness is also mentioned as a matter of con-textualization because of the difficulty of finding the film nowadays. TEACHING YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE: CATCHER IN THE RYE AS A LANGUAGE MAKER AND BREAKER Meryem Ayan American Culture and Literature Department, Pamukkale University, Denizli, Turkey [email protected] Abstract Young adult literature dealing with familiar universal youth problems and concerns that most of young adults either have experienced or are still experiencing has many qualities which make it particularly suitable for English literature lecturers and foreign language instructors to use it in their curriculums. Young adult literature enables young adults to identify themselves with the familiar youth problems during the maturational and experiential development period and serves as a great motivator for teaching language and developing reading skills. Namely, young adult literature as a developing genre is a valid pathway to engage young adults in learning language through reading literary texts. However, when first published, The Catcher in the Rye (1951) as a young adult literature was banned from schools because of portraying a 17-year-old young adolescent using obscene and offensive language. -
