Jerome David Salinger
Jerome David Salinger Jerome David Salinger was born in Manhattan, New York, on New Year's Day, 1919.He was an American author, best known for his novel The Catcher in the Rye. Salinger began writing short stories while in secondary school. His last original published work was in 1965 and he gave his last interview in 1980. The young Salinger attended public schools on the West Side of Manhattan. Then the family moved to Park Avenue and Salinger went to the McBurney School,a private school in Manhattan. Salinger was not a good student, he had failing grades, and therefore was kicked out.Then he went to the Valley Forge Military Academy,where he graduated in 1936. At this school he began writing stories and he was the literary editor of the class yearbook. During the Second World War, Salinger arranged to meet with Ernest Hemingway, a writer who had influenced him. Salinger was impressed with Hemingway's friendliness and modesty.In June 1955, at the age of 36, Salinger married Claire Douglas. They had two children, Margaret and Matthew.Salinger died of natural causes at his home in New Hampshire, United States on January 27, 2010. He was 91. His main creations were books: The Catcher in the Rye (1951),Nine Stories (1953),Franny and Zooey (1961) and a few more stories Go See Eddie, A Boy in France, This Sandwich Has No Mayonnaise, A Girl I Knew, I'm Crazy, Blue Melody. The Catcher in the Rye is a 1951 novel by J. D. Salinger.Originally published for adults, it has since become popular with adolescent readers for its themes of teenage confusion, angst, alienation, language, and rebellion. -

Salinger’s post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from his time in the armed services, as it is apparently portrayed by his character Seymour Glass, through the application of psychoanalytical theories. After reviewing sources on PTSD and Salinger’s early short stories about Sgt. “Babe” Gladwaller, Sergeant X in “For Esmé with Love and Squalor,” and Seymour Glass in “A Perfect Day for Bananafish,” it became evident that all of these characters were suffering from what is now called post-traumatic stress disorder and that Seymour Glass was the severest case; this is evident due to his inability to assimilate into American Post-World War II society, and his desperate attempts at repressing his desires and memories from the war that still haunted him as well his creator. Various secondary sources, articles, texts and books will be used to emphasize the arguments that will be made. The first chapter of this essay will focus on the historical context in which Salinger wrote these stories. The second chapter will focus on post-traumatic stress disorder and its effect on J. D. Salinger. The third chapter will focus on the three elements of Freud’s model of the psyche, the id, the superego, and the ego and why Seymour decided to take his own life. -

Space-temporal thinking in salinger’s “Uncle wiggily in connecticut” and its film adaptation My foolish heart 1 Renata Gonçalves Gomes Abstract: This essay attempt to develop a study on J.D. Salinger’s Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut (1948) in rela-tion to its adaptation to the cinema entitled My Foo-lish Heart (1950), regarding the review of literature of both masterpieces and an analysis of specific parts and scenes according to Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of space--temporal relations in literature and arts. The repulse of Salinger to his story’s adaptation and his behavior of reclusiveness is also mentioned as a matter of con-textualization because of the difficulty of finding the film nowadays. Some other comparisons are made in the essay, putting Salinger, Edward Albee and Kathe-rine Mansfield in dialogue to each other through their literature. Keywords: J.D. Salinger. Jerome David Salinger vive isolato in un cottage nei boschi di Cornish, New Hamp- shire, fin dal 1953, l’anno prima che la pubblicazione del suo celeberrimo Il giovane Holden lo trasformasse nell’autore più amato da generazioni di giovani lettori. Ha sempre rifiutato interviste e colloqui, e dal 1965 ha tagliato anche l’ultimo canale di comunicazione con il mondo esterno decidendo di non pubblicare più. Però il 17 ottobre 1986 dovette concedere un’intervista, straordinaria anche perché si è svolta alla presenza di un pubblico ufficiale, in occasione di una causa legale da lui stesso intentata per bloccare la pubblicazione di questa biografia. Hamilton aveva a- vuto infatti l’insperata fortuna di trovare oltre cento lettere inedite che, insieme a nu- merose testimonianze dirette e a una puntuale analisi dei testi di Salinger, gli hanno permesso di ricostruire tutto il percorso umano e intellettuale dello scrittore, dagli an- ni in cui Salinger era un giovane sardonico e lunatico che aspirava alla fama e si au- topromuoveva con molta abilità, fino al momento in cui l’ossessione della riservatezza lo condusse a convivere soltanto con i propri personaggi e a raccontarne le vicende a un unico lettore: sé stesso. Alla ricerca di Salinger, perciò, è ben più di una biografia che colma i vuoti di una storia di vita e di scrittura: è un clamoroso caso letterario, un saggio critico fonda- mentale per la conoscenza di uno scrittore che ha voluto rendersi semipostumo, e una godibilissima detective story che ha per protagonisti un cacciatore di informazioni molto rispettoso e una preda ostinata che non si rassegna a trovarsi, alla fine, cattu- rata. -

I didn't read the diary, read Kafka, and I didn't know that his sisters were dead in the camps either. I dreamed of girls with her face before I saw it on the cover of the book.
