Hemingway & Faulkner English 423, Fall 2016 Dr. David Swerdlow 405 Thompson-Clark, x7345 Office Hours: MWF 11-12 and by appt. Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner are among the United States’ most celebrated writers. Nobel laureates and icons of the modernist era, these two writers may be most known for their easily recognizable and radically different styles that surface in everything they write. In many ways, however, they are kindred spirits in terms of theme and ambition. Consider their Nobel Prize acceptance speeches. (Please note that Hemingway, because of illness, was not able to give his speech himself. It was delivered by the U.S. Ambassador to Sweden.) Having no facility for speech-making and no command of oratory nor any domination of rhetoric, I wish to thank the administrators of the generosity of Alfred Nobel for this Prize. No writer who knows the great writers who did not receive the Prize can accept it other than with humility. There is no need to list these writers. Everyone here may make his own list according to his knowledge and his conscience. It would be impossible for me to ask the Ambassador of my country to read a speech in which a writer said all of the things which are in his heart. Things may not be immediately discernible in what a man writes, and in this sometimes he is fortunate; but eventually they are quite clear and by these and the degree of alchemy that he possesses he will endure or be forgotten. Writing, at its best, is a lonely life. -

Helfer Michael G. Levine This dissertation investigates the conflict between the powerful emancipatory image of the New Woman as represented in the illustrated magazines of the Weimar Republic and the translation of this image into a lifestyle acted out by women during this era. I argue that while female journalists promote the image of the New Woman in illustrated magazines as a liberating opening onto self-determination and self- management, this very image is simultaneously and paradoxically oppressive. For women to shake off the inheritance of a patriarchal past, they must learn to adjust to a new identity, one that is still to a large extent influenced by and in the service of men. The ideal beauty image designed by female journalists as a framework for emancipation in actuality turned into an oppressive normalization in professional and social markets in which traditional rules no longer obtained. -

TO CHILDREN I GIVE MY HEART VASILY SUKHOMLINSKY (Translated from the Russian by Holly Smith) From the Publishers Vasily Alexandrovich Sukhomlinsky (1918-1970) devoted thirty-five years of his short life to the upbringing and instruction of children. For twenty-nine years he was director of a school in the Ukrainian village of Pavlysh, far away from the big cities. For his work in education, he was awarded the titles of Hero of Socialist Labour and Merited Teacher of the Ukrainian SSR; and elected Corresponding Member of the Academy of Pedagogical Science of the USSR. What is the essence of Vasily Sukhomlinsky's work as an educator? Progressive educators have long tried to merge upbringing and instruction into one educational process. This dream was realized in the educational work of Sukhomlinsky. To see an individual in every school child - this was the essence of his educational method and a necessary requirement for anyone who hopes to raise and teach children. Vasily Sukhomlinsky showed in theory and practice that any healthy child can get a modern secondary education in an ordinary public school without any separation of children into group of bright and less bright. This was no new discovery. But he found the sensible mean that enable, the teacher to lead the child to knowledge in keeping with the national educational programme. The main thing for Sukhomlinsky was to awaken the child's desire to learn, to develop a taste for self-education and self-discipline. Sukhomlinsky studied each of his pupils, consulting with the other teachers and with the parents, comparing his own thoughts with the views of the great educators of the past and with folk wisdom. -

Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois to Dr. Clarence Edmonds Hemingway and Grace Hall Hemingway. The second of six children, Ernest enjoyed an adventurous boyhood, fishing and hunting with his father in the northern woods of Michigan. He attended Oak Park High School where he excelled in his classes, particularly English. He tried his hand at football and swimming, edited the school paper (the Trapeze), and contributed pieces to the school's literary magazine (the Tabula). After graduating high school, Ernest traveled to Kansas City and worked as a cub reporter for The Kansas City Star. In 1918, he began service as an ambulance driver for the Italian army. On July 8, he was wounded at Fossalta on the Italian Piave while delivering chocolates, cigarettes, and postcards to soldiers. He married Elizabeth Hadley Richardson on September 3, 1921. The newlyweds soon entered the literary community of Paris, living off of Hadley's trust fund and Ernest's pay as a foreign correspondent for the Toronto Star. The 1920's were extremely productive writing years for Hemingway. Three Stories and Ten Poems was published in 1923, In Our Time in 1925. In 1926, The Torrents of Spring and the widely successful novel, The Sun Also Rises were published. -

Teddy, by J.D. Salinger
Teddy, by J.D. Salinger In A Nutshell J.D. Salinger is an American writer famous for his 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye and the short stories he published in The New Yorker in the 1950s and 60s. Many of Salinger's stories revolve around the infamous Glass family, seven siblings with remarkable intelligence and unique spiritual interests. On the surface, "Teddy" is not a part of the Glass family saga. It tells the story of a precocious ten-year-old genius boy with an interest in and knowledge of Eastern religions that far surpasses his years. While young Teddy McArdle is not explicitly connected to the Glass family, we find an interesting connection when reading "Seymour: an Introduction," a story about Seymour Glass narrated by his brother, Buddy Glass. In this tale, Buddy admits that he himself wrote "Teddy," and that the ten-year-old genius greatly resembles his older brother, Seymour. Fittingly, then, "Teddy" belongs to the Nine Stories, a collection of Salinger's short works, along side a few more obvious Glass family stories, such as "A Perfect Day for Bananafish." While these stories differ in surface subject matter, they all explore similar themes, among them Eastern religious philosophy. "Teddy" in particular reflects Salinger's interest and knowledge in this area, and indeed many see the characters in "Teddy" as pulpits for Salinger's own ideas on the topic. ANYWAY?:- JAMES TACKACH • RogeR WilliamS UniveRSity READERS AND CRITICS WHO VIEW the typical Ernest Hemingway hero as a man of courage and integrity are confounded by Jack Brennan of "Fifty Grand," who places a substantial bet against himself and purposely loses his championship fight by delivering a low blow to his opponent in the bout's fi- nal round, thereby winning the bet. Many readers would agree with Earl Rovit and Gerry Brenner's ass~rtion that Jack "breaks the code in betting against himself" (45) or with Phillips G. and Rosemary R. Davies's cornment that the code of the Hemingway hero "can be seen most clearly when the courageous action is performed ~or its own sake" (258), not, as in Jack's case, for the sake of making money.
