A Farewell to Arms BY Ernest Hemingway Book One 1 In the late summer of that year we lived in a house in a village that looked across the river and the plain to the mountains. In the bed of the river there were pebbles and boulders, dry and white in the sun, and the water was clear and swiftly moving and blue in the channels. Troops went by the house and down the road and the dust they raised powdered the leaves of the trees. The trunks of the trees too were dusty and the leaves fell early that year and we saw the troops marching along the road and the dust rising and leaves, stirred by the breeze, falling and the soldiers marching and afterward the road bare and white except for the leaves. The plain was rich with crops; there were many orchards of fruit trees and beyond the plain the mountains were brown and bare. There was fighting in the mountains and at night we could see the flashes from the artillery. In the dark it was like summer lightning, but the nights were cool and there was not the feeling of a storm coming. Sometimes in the dark we heard the troops marching under the window and guns going past pulled by motor-tractors. There was much traffic at night and many mules on the roads with boxes of ammunition on each side of their pack-saddles and gray motor trucks that carried men, and other trucks with loads covered with canvas that moved slower in the traffic. -

!" Rainy Day Blues: The Role of Weather in A Farewell to Arms The elements play a critical role in Hemingway’s writings. They foreshadow future events, reflect the emotions of characters, and serve as a metaphor for overarching themes. In A Farewell to Arms, weather is heavily symbolic, especially the rain. Throughout the novel, the weather transitions gradually from warm and dry to wet, cold and muddy as the war becomes more real and immediate to Frederic. It is a symbol for mortality, steadily falling as a constant reminder of the violence of the war and the inevitability of death. A Farewell to Arms begins in the summer, when Frederic is living peacefully in the countryside with the other officers. On the first page of the first chapter, the narrator describes the bed of the river, which is shallow and calm. Protruding rocks, “dry and white in the sun” (3), are unsullied by rain and mud, and maintain their white hue, symbolic of their purity--the river bed has yet to be flooded, and it flows along lazily in the summer sun. The rain, and the war, are far away; the artillery flashes in the distance seem benign, “like summer lightning” (3), rather than an actual threat. The narrator, Frederic, remarks that despite these flashes of the distant violence, “the nights were cool and there was not the feeling of a storm coming” (3). The violence is far-off; Frederic reacts to it just as a child who listens to a storm in bed, but snuggles further under the covers and feels safe. -

Hemingway & Faulkner English 423, Fall 2016 Dr. David Swerdlow 405 Thompson-Clark, x7345 Office Hours: MWF 11-12 and by appt. Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner are among the United States’ most celebrated writers. Nobel laureates and icons of the modernist era, these two writers may be most known for their easily recognizable and radically different styles that surface in everything they write. In many ways, however, they are kindred spirits in terms of theme and ambition. Consider their Nobel Prize acceptance speeches. (Please note that Hemingway, because of illness, was not able to give his speech himself. It was delivered by the U.S. Ambassador to Sweden.) Having no facility for speech-making and no command of oratory nor any domination of rhetoric, I wish to thank the administrators of the generosity of Alfred Nobel for this Prize. No writer who knows the great writers who did not receive the Prize can accept it other than with humility. There is no need to list these writers. Everyone here may make his own list according to his knowledge and his conscience. It would be impossible for me to ask the Ambassador of my country to read a speech in which a writer said all of the things which are in his heart. Things may not be immediately discernible in what a man writes, and in this sometimes he is fortunate; but eventually they are quite clear and by these and the degree of alchemy that he possesses he will endure or be forgotten. Writing, at its best, is a lonely life. -

ANALYSIS “Big Two-Hearted River” (1925) Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) Chapter IV The vignette preceding the story, Chapter IV, renders the death of a bullfighter gored in the arena. In the previous vignette the bullfighter, Maera, is characterized as a responsible matador with integrity who is consequently assigned the bad bulls that survive bad matadors. The story dramatizes the recovery of a soldier wounded in the war, who like the bullfighter got injured by chance. A bull is wild like warfare and wildfire. The first 7 vignettes in In Our Time are about war, followed by one about crime, then 6 vignettes about bullfighting. This vignette and story bring together the thematic motifs of war and bullfighting. Both the soldier and the bullfighter are carried away on a stretcher, one in war and one in peace. Everything speeds up for the bullfighter as he dies, whereas everything slows down for Nick as he recovers. The vignette that follows the story is the second one about crime, bringing the third motif into relation with the other two. In Our Time is a succession of dispatches and stories by a war correspondent intended to shock complacent readers into facing the brutal facts of life. Violence and the prospect of death are everywhere in our time and all time. I Nick Adams, an American Adam, experiences a “Fall” when he gets wounded on the Italian front in Chapter VI of In Our Time (1925): “He had been hit in the spine.” Though he is the protagonist, Nick is so much subordinated in the book, especially by the vignettes—in the Naturalist tradition the individual is a small and insignificant speck in the universe--that most readers miss the fact that he got wounded and consequently have no idea what happens in the last story or what it means. -

Though later he used he vividly described nature. His style had been said to lack substance because he avoids direct statements and descriptions of emotion. Later he began to write more deeply into emotions, mostly discussing death and providing a detailed picture in the readers mind Style seen as direct and simple He used his senses as the center for his writing Believed the mind was “treacherous and abstract” Wrote in an unconventional style, with the problems of war, violence and death as their themes, presenting a symbolic interpretation of life. While working in Michigan, Hemingway met Elizabeth Hadley Richardson, an inexperienced and naïve girl, educated at an all girls school. -

His life attitude of the characters in the novels influenced the whole world. His first masterpiece The Sun Also Rises contributes a lot to the rise of feminism and make the world began to befamiliar with a term: The New Woman through the portrayl of Brett. This paper is aimed to target the source and traits of The New Woman. Keywords: The Lost Generation, The New Woman, Brett 1. General Introduction of Hemingway’s Lifetime and His Works Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1899. And he began his writing career in the Kansas City in 1917. He went there and served as an eager and energetic reporter, and was later recruited as an ambulance driver working with the Red Cross and went to Europe. This led to the crucial event of his life. On July 8, 1918 he was severely wounded in the knee in Italy. He recovered in time and remained with the Italian army until the end of the war. His war experience proved so shattering and nightmarish that his life and writings were permanently affected. In a sense, through all his life, he lived under the influence, and continued to write about it in order to relive it and forget about it. Back to the United States, He stayed for a time in North Michigan, reading, writing, and fishing. -

Nelson Ernest Hemingway: The Writer in Context is "a commemorative record of three days of informed and engaging conversation about Ernest Hemingway "which took place at North eastern University in May of 1982" (p.x). The Hemingway Society and the John F. Kennedy Library cooperated with the University to make it a memorable event. The book is divided into four parts, Personal Comments and Reminiscences, The Craft of Composition, Interpretations Biographical and Critical, and Relationships with Other Writ ers. The last two sections are about twice as long as the first two. The first section contains reminiscences from Charles Scribner, Jr., about Hemingway's long association with Scribner's Publishing Company. Scribner praises Hemingway's loyalty to the company, particularly to his father and grandfather and, of course, Max Perkins. Patrick Hemingway shared his memories of sailing on the "Pilar" during the early days of World War II, and comments on how his father transmuted such materials to the fiction of Islands in the Stream. -

Metaphorical Illness in Hemingway's Works Abstract Hemingway, through his characters, illustrates the many different genres and functions of disease. More than just inflictors of sadness and pain, disease and injury are part of the human condition. They are undeniable truths that give life to humanity, Hemingway’s characters, and Hemingway himself. As Hemingway writes in Death in the Afternoon, “…all stories, if continued far enough, end in death, and he is no true storyteller who would keep that from you.” Part of Hemingway’s art is acknowledging that there is no true cure. Vitality and death, contentedness and pain, disease and survival all coexist in Hemingway’s writing as one: life.
