Barsley was accused of abusing Benjamin Cook, Drum-Major in the marines, and striking John West, a drummer in the marines. It was alleged Hill had stolen bread valued at twopence, while Cole was charged with stealing two deal planks valued at ten pence. The men appeared before the Court of Criminal Judicature, the bench being made up of Judge-Advocate Collins and a number of naval and military officers - Captains Hunter, Meredith and Shea, and Lieutenants Ball, Bradley and Creswell.1,2 However, the first criminal prosecutions to take place on what is now Australian soil actually occurred in more dramatic circumstances in 1629. -

D. (D.M.A.) (J.S.D) Cornell University 2012 This dissertation is an inquiry into spatial aspects of control, resistance and communication in the Dutch East India Company (VOC), as revealed by the architecture of its ships. The architectural type of the retourschip or “homeward bounder” is described and the history of its development, 1602- 1795 is traced, with special attention paid to the period 1740-1783, when the richest records concerning ship design were produced and the ships reached their most standardized forms. The retourschip was one of the highest technological achievements of its day and was used as an emblem for military and mercantile power by the VOC. The ship’s role and meaning as an armature for the VOC’s ideological constructs is examined. Ships also, in Paul Gilroy’s words, constituted "microcultural, micro-political systems," with their own social and spatial orders. These orders are explored, along with their ideological uses as structuring models for VOC society. Changes to the spatial design of the retourschip through the period of the VOC’s operation are linked to changes in the social structure aboard and to changes in the status of VOC mariners, officers and captains. -

Batavia Shipwreck Site and Survivor Camps Area 1629 – Houtman Abrolhos WESTERN AUSTRALI A The story of how the Dutch merchant vessel Batavia became wrecked off the coast of Western Australia in June 1629 and the bloody aftermath is a fascinating tale of maritime treachery, murder and ultimately, heroism. The Dutch East India Company was the dominant trading company in the East Indies (Indonesia) during the 17th and 18th centuries, with its headquarters in Batavia (Jakarta). Wrecks like Batavia’s demonstrated the necessity for more accurate charts and resulted in the commissioning of Vlamingh’s 1696 voyage. I n October 1628 a Company ship, the Batavia, set out from Holland on her maiden journey to Batavia carrying vast wealth in silver coins and jewels. Undermerchant Jeronimus Cornelisz conspired with other officers to mutiny and seized the ship for its cargo. On 4 June 1629 The mutineers were tried on the island for the murder of the Batavia struck a coral reef in the Houtman Abrolhos over 120 people. Interrogated and tortured for 10 days Islands, 40 kilometres off the Western Australian coast, until they signed confessions, seven were hanged. Two of and sank. the youngest mutineers, Wouter Loos and Jan Pelgrom Survivors managed to reach a nearby barren island, later de Bye, were sentenced to be marooned on the Australian known as ‘Batavia’s Graveyard’. The ship’s Commander, mainland, where they became the first known European Francisco Pelsaert, set sail in a long boat to fetch help from residents of Australia. No further contact with them was Batavia, more than 900 nautical miles away along a largely ever recorded. -

1 The Batavia Mutiny: Australia’s First Military Conflict in 1629 Rupert Gerritsen Most Australians presume that the first military conflict in Australian history, one involving regular soldiers on both sides, occurred sometime after 1788. But that is not so. In fact the first military conflict on Australian soil actually occurred in 1629. It arose in rather unusual circumstances and was itself a most curious little „war‟. At about 5 a.m. on 4 June 1629 the Dutch Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC) ship, the Batavia, on its way to Java with 316 people on board, struck Morning Reef in the Wallabi Group of the Abrolhos Islands, about 60 km off the central west coast of Western Australia.1 Approximately 275 people survived the initial disaster, most finding their way by various means to the nearest island, Beacon Island. But they were still in great peril as they had almost no food or water. The most senior officer, Commandeur Francisco Pelsaert,2 immediately began to search for water on nearby islands in the ship‟s yawl, without success. He then decided to make for the mainland in the yawl, accompanied by 50 of the crew. On 9 June, as they approached the coast to land, they were struck by a severe winter storm, and were nearly swamped. They hovered off the coast for almost 2 days, battling to stay afloat in the stormy seas, before heading north in the hope of finding calmer conditions and water, but were unable to land for a further 550 kilometres. When they did, they found little water and so the decision was made to make for Java, over 2000 kilometres away, to get help. -

The Mutineers Marooned in 1629 – Hutt River or Wittecarra Gully? Rupert Gerritsen Introduction Between 1629 and 1727 at least 73 crew members and passengers from Dutch ships are known to have found themselves unwillingly but permanently detained on the central and upper west coast of Western Australia. The actual number could have been as high as 240. These people found themselves in this predicament as a result of a number of shipwrecks, other accidents or deliberate marooning. The possibility that some actually survived and perhaps even prospered on what was to them foreign shores is an intriguing one. It is also of some significance for Australian history in that it marks the beginnings of a permanent European presence in Australia. The prospect that they may have interacted, engaged and perhaps integrated with Aboriginal populations in those parts, and in so doing influenced their culture in some way, adds a further, tantalising, dimension to the historical interest engendered by this topic. It not surprising, therefore, that considerable amount of research and commentary has been generated over time in regard to these issues. Speculation about the fate of these crew and passengers began in the latter half of 19th century and early 20th century with some, such as explorer AC Gregory and ethnographer Daisy Bates, asserting that these unfortunates had actually survived, and this was evident in the physical appearance of particular Aboriginal populations. While Ernest Favenc‟s Marooned On Australia, published in 1896,1 provided a fictionalised account of the adventures of the two Batavia mutineers abandoned in 1629, the question as to the actual fate of those stranded on the west coast did not begin to be rigorously pursued until the second half of the 20th century.
