THE BATAVIA, RE-VISITED Brian Lemin. For those of you who have not "visited" the Batavia for the first time as yet, you should plan to read Rosemary Shepherd’s article in OIDFA 1994/1, where she not only retells the story of the Batavia, but more importantly reconstructs the lace found on this important vessel. INTRODUCTION A wonderful reconstruction of the vessel Batavia, which was wrecked off the West coast of Australia in 1629, is visiting Sydney for the Olympic year 2000, and being brought up as a seafaring man and lately a bobbin man, I wanted to see it. She belonged to the Dutch East India Company and was designed as a "return" ship. That is it was made to bring back spices, tea and other valuable products from the East Indies. The original was wrecked in 1929 some 60 kms. off the west coast of Australia, and since its discovery in 1963 it has been subject to maritime archaeological investigation and retrieval. Amongst the finds were some fragments of lace The Batavia in Darling Harbour. Sydney. and two lace bobbins. Hence and article on it in this web page. THE STORY. This story has all the ingredients for what my generation called a "Boys Own Paper" adventure. Indeed Rosemary’s article starts with the sentence, "Desertion, Mutiny and murder awaited the crew on the unfortunate ship". Frankly I think she understated the brutality of the events and even the eventual brutality of the punishments for the perpetrators of such crimes. But I go ahead of myself. It is not the purpose to of this article to retell the story of the Batavia, but rather to uses it as a stepping stone to looking at the bobbins that they found on the wreck, but having whetted your appetite I must at least précis the events for you. -

Barsley was accused of abusing Benjamin Cook, Drum-Major in the marines, and striking John West, a drummer in the marines. It was alleged Hill had stolen bread valued at twopence, while Cole was charged with stealing two deal planks valued at ten pence. The men appeared before the Court of Criminal Judicature, the bench being made up of Judge-Advocate Collins and a number of naval and military officers - Captains Hunter, Meredith and Shea, and Lieutenants Ball, Bradley and Creswell.1,2 However, the first criminal prosecutions to take place on what is now Australian soil actually occurred in more dramatic circumstances in 1629. -

1 1993 JOURNAL WRITING - Joseph Mallard TO ACCOMPANY PHOTOGRAPHS OF MID-WESTERN AUSTRALIA FOREWORD I had taken up what would become a journey of self-discovery and identity as I travelled to Shark Bay of Western Australia in a quest to discover the heritage of my late father in this remote part of Australia. After graduating in Fine Arts, I travelled to Perth from the eastern seaboard, to visit my grandmother Ivy (Poland) Mallard. It was here that I came into contact with her collection of archival documentary photos of family life and work in the region of Shark Bay. Here wind swept shores, big skies, and eternal horizons dominate the land. Today Shark Bay is listed as one of the First World Heritage sites of ecological significance. My grandmother recounted to me how they lived off the ocean’s supply of fish and dugong and the station sheep. Ivy held fond memories of the days on Carrarang Station off Steep Point in Edel Land. She painted a very poetic picture of an isolated yet bountiful existence, living off the land (see interview with Ivy). I soon headed north of Perth with my camera to Geraldton, half way between Perth and Shark Bay here I discovered my father and his brother attended boarding school at the Greenough convent commencing WW11. My grandmother Ivy was very proud, and wanted her children brought up ‘properly’ away from the wild frontier town of Shark Bay. In the early part of the century, Geraldton was the last post of civilization before the greater northern frontier of the Kimberly. -

Zuytdorp shipwreck Fact sheet The Zuytdorp was a Dutch East India Company ship travelling to Batavia SHARK BAY (Jakarta, Indonesia) in 1712. On board World Heritage were about 200 passengers and crew and a rich cargo, including 248,000 silver coins. They were travelling well south of the Equator to make the most of the The ship The ship westerly winds —the roaring 40s. A problem with this route was deciding when to head north as they could not calculate longitude. How the ship became wrecked in June 1712 remains a mystery because no survivors reached Batavia. It is likely that the captain mistimed the vessel’s turn north towards Batavia and abruptly encountered the Western Australian coastline. The Zuytdorp probably struck Wrecked Wrecked reef without warning, most likely at night as the anchors were stowed away. The 33 metre long three-masted Zuytdorp would have been helpless once against the cliffs. The wreck of the Zuytdorp was discovered in 1927 between Tamala and Murchison House pastoral stations by workers fencing and trapping dingoes. One of the workers was the late Tom Pepper Senior. In 1954 geologist Phillip Discovered Discovered Playford met Pepper, examined artefacts from the site and determined from the coins that the wreck was the Zuytdorp. The 59 000 hectare Zuytdorp Nature Reserve above the wreck area was declared in 1992. The reserve includes most of the permanent and seasonal soaks that shipwreck survivors would have relied on for water. Access to the reserve and wreck site is restricted. The wreck and adjacent land is a protected zone and permission is required from the WA Maritime Museum and land managers to enter this area. -

D. (D.M.A.) (J.S.D) Cornell University 2012 This dissertation is an inquiry into spatial aspects of control, resistance and communication in the Dutch East India Company (VOC), as revealed by the architecture of its ships. The architectural type of the retourschip or “homeward bounder” is described and the history of its development, 1602- 1795 is traced, with special attention paid to the period 1740-1783, when the richest records concerning ship design were produced and the ships reached their most standardized forms. The retourschip was one of the highest technological achievements of its day and was used as an emblem for military and mercantile power by the VOC. The ship’s role and meaning as an armature for the VOC’s ideological constructs is examined. Ships also, in Paul Gilroy’s words, constituted "microcultural, micro-political systems," with their own social and spatial orders. These orders are explored, along with their ideological uses as structuring models for VOC society. Changes to the spatial design of the retourschip through the period of the VOC’s operation are linked to changes in the social structure aboard and to changes in the status of VOC mariners, officers and captains. -

Batavia Shipwreck Site and Survivor Camps Area 1629 – Houtman Abrolhos WESTERN AUSTRALI A The story of how the Dutch merchant vessel Batavia became wrecked off the coast of Western Australia in June 1629 and the bloody aftermath is a fascinating tale of maritime treachery, murder and ultimately, heroism. The Dutch East India Company was the dominant trading company in the East Indies (Indonesia) during the 17th and 18th centuries, with its headquarters in Batavia (Jakarta). Wrecks like Batavia’s demonstrated the necessity for more accurate charts and resulted in the commissioning of Vlamingh’s 1696 voyage. I n October 1628 a Company ship, the Batavia, set out from Holland on her maiden journey to Batavia carrying vast wealth in silver coins and jewels. Undermerchant Jeronimus Cornelisz conspired with other officers to mutiny and seized the ship for its cargo. On 4 June 1629 The mutineers were tried on the island for the murder of the Batavia struck a coral reef in the Houtman Abrolhos over 120 people. Interrogated and tortured for 10 days Islands, 40 kilometres off the Western Australian coast, until they signed confessions, seven were hanged. Two of and sank. the youngest mutineers, Wouter Loos and Jan Pelgrom Survivors managed to reach a nearby barren island, later de Bye, were sentenced to be marooned on the Australian known as ‘Batavia’s Graveyard’. The ship’s Commander, mainland, where they became the first known European Francisco Pelsaert, set sail in a long boat to fetch help from residents of Australia. No further contact with them was Batavia, more than 900 nautical miles away along a largely ever recorded. -
