There's a Real Buzz and Sense of Purpose About What This Company Is Doing
15 FEBRUARY 7.15PM & 17 FEBRUARY 2PM “There’s a real buzz and sense of purpose about what this company is doing” ~ The Guardian www.niopera.com Grand Opera House, Belfast Welcome to The Grand Opera House for this new production of The Flying Dutchman. This is, by some way, NI Opera’s biggest production to date. Our very first opera (Menotti’s The Medium, coincidentally staged two years ago this month) utilised just five singers and a chamber band, and to go from this to a grand opera demanding 50 singers and a full symphony orchestra in such a short space of time indicates impressive progress. Similarly, our performances of Noye’s Fludde at the Beijing Music Festival in October, and our recent Irish Times Theatre Award nominations for The Turn of the Screw, demonstrate that our focus on bringing high quality, innovative opera to the widest possible audience continues to bear fruit. It feels appropriate for us to be staging our first Wagner opera in the bicentenary of the composer’s birth, but this production marks more than just a historical anniversary. Unsurprisingly, given the cost and complexities involved in performing Wagner, this will be the first fully staged Dutchman to be seen in Northern Ireland for generations. More unexpectedly, perhaps, this is the first ever new production of a Wagner opera by a Northern Irish company. Northern Ireland features heavily in this production. The opera begins and ends with ships and the sea, and it does not take too much imagination to link this back to Belfast’s industrial heritage and the recent Titanic commemorations. -

Val Gavin Song Offerings
Val Gavin Song Offerings Julian Gavin (tenor) and May Gavin(piano) Classical vocal Tall Poppies TP235 Reviewed by Inge Southcott Song Offerings by Val Gavin (1935-2003) are two unpublished song cycles, here wonderfully performed by her son and daughter. They certainly deserve recognition as part of the great tradition of twentieth century English art song. I was moved by this CD. Not only are Val Gavin’s songs as beautiful as her sensitive face gracing the CD cover, and the performances of the highest quality, but the whole package is a loving tribute by Julian and May Gavin to her, their mother. The revealing and insightful biography that May includes in the CD notes makes fascinating reading and puts Val’s work in context. Clearly the siblings greatly admired her and are grateful for the love of music she instilled in them. And both have themselves excelled as professional musicians. Julian, born 1965, now residing in England, has been a busy tenor, performing in top opera houses all over the world. He has recorded Don José in Carmen and the title roles in Ernani and Don Carlos for Chandos Records. He was a very popular regular with OA many times. But disaster struck in 2011, when he was diagnosed with a serious neurological condition and had to withdraw from performing. (For details, go to Slipped Disc where he courageously writes about his struggle with his debilitating condition. http://slippedisc.com/2016/05/1st-person-exclusive-the-tenor-who-disappeared/ ). Julian Gavin- tenor Don Carlos, Leeds May, his younger sister, learnt piano from Val and at the early age of thirteen, obtained her Licentiate Diploma of Music. -
In Association With
OVERTURE OPERA GUIDES in association with We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Overture Publishing on this new series of opera guides and to build on the work English National Opera did over twenty years ago on the Calder Opera Guide Series. Masterminded by the late Nicholas John, ENO’s Literary Manager and Dramaturg for almost twenty years until his tragic early death in 1996, the original series of Opera Guides stands as a testimony to Nicholas’s remarkable energy, skills and passionate enthusiasm for the art form. As well as reworking and updating the existing titles, Overture and ENO have commissioned new titles for the series, and all of the guides will be published to coincide with repertoire being staged by the company at the London Coliseum. The first of the Overture Guides in association with ENO is published to mark a major event: a new production of Tosca in May 2010, directed by the leading American soprano Catherine Malfitano, who, in the 1980s and 1990s, made the role of Tosca her own. The production is conducted by our award-winning Music Director Edward Gardner, and the cast is led by soprano Amanda Echalaz (Tosca), Julian Gavin (Cavaradossi) and Anthony Michaels-Moore (Scarpia). We hope that these guides will prove an invaluable resource now and for years to come, and that by delving deeper into the history of an opera, the poetry of the libretto and the nuances of the score, readers’ understanding and appreciation of the opera and the art form in general will be enhanced.
