OBITUARY

It is our painful duty to announce this week the death of Sir Andrew Agnew, of Lochnaw Bart. The deceased has for many years been known in the country a generous and truly Christian gentleman, and to the world as the consistent, devoted, self-denying advocate of the Sabbath cause, - to which he devoted his time, his influence, and his energies. In him the country has lost one of her truest patriots - society one of her brightest ornaments – and the poor one of their best and most enlightened friends. The tidings of his death spread like wild fire from house to house - they have shed a gloom upon every countenance, and have been felt in every home to speak of a great public and domestic bereavement, which is only relieved by the thought, that he now enjoys the blessed rest, the anticipation of which was so dear to him. Sir Andrew Agnew, while engaged in prosecuting, with almost superhuman energy, the great object to which his life was dedicated, was in February last, seized with scarlet fever. From this attack he was gradually recovering; and it was hoped that his intended return to the country would, by the blessing of God, speedily re-establish his health. But it was otherwise determined; on Tuesday, the 10th inst., symptoms of a relapse appeared, which alarmed his family, and the sufferer gradually sank till Thursday evening, when he calmly breathed his spirit up without a struggle, full of faith, and rejoicing in the hope that maketh not ashamed. Sir Andrew was born in the year 1793, and is succeeded in his title and estates by his eldest son, who, in 1846, married the Lady Louisa Noel, eldest daughter of the Earl of Gainsborough. Numerous, influential, and pressing applications having been made to Sir Andrew Agnew by the magistrates and leading citizens of Edinburgh, to permit the funeral of his beloved and revered father to take place in the capital of his native country, Sir Andrew has reluctantly yielded; and though this must be a deep disappointment to thousands here, who would have wished to follow his remains to their resting place yet we cannot but honour the motives which have induced Air Andrew to sacrifice his own feelings to the wishes of his country. The funeral took place on Thursday: and we understand that the Rev. Mr Urquhart has been requested to preach the funeral sermon, in Leswalt Free Church, on Sabbath first.

It is with deep sorrow that we record the death of Sir Andrew Agnew of Lochnaw, Bart, which took place at his house, Rutland square, on Thursday night, at eight o’clock. Towards the end of February Sir Andrew had imposed great labour upon himself in preparing for the meeting of the Caledonian and Scottish Central Railway Companies, which he attended, and in the business of which he took part. This, added to his other labours, incessantly prosecuted in the great cause of the Sabbath, brought on a slight attack of fever. He rallied, however, and his friend cherished the hope of his ultimate and speedy recovery; nor was it till a few days ago that he showed symptoms of relapse, and that his family and medical attendants began to be alarmed. From this time he sank gradually, till Thursday last, when he expired. The character and labours of the deceased Baronet are so well known, not in this country only, but all over Christendom, that it is unnecessary for us to dwell upon them. He had devoted himself to one great and holy cause. – the Sabbath. For this only did he live. Whatever faculty he possessed, whatever influence he wielded, whatever office he filled, whatever rank he held, was made subservient to the furtherance of the sacred cause to which he had devoted his life. He was most unwearied in seeking on opportunities of keeping the question before the public eye, and of promoting the national observance of that day, both in his place in Parliament where he at one time represented his native county, and in the meetings of railway companies. After years of hard fighting, he succeeded in inducing the Directors of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway to close their lines on the Sabbath; and with regard to those railways that remain shut, we feel that we owe it mainly to the exertions of Sir Andrew in bringing the public mind to bear on the question. His victories were gained by his perseverance and his high moral courage. He stood undaunted before opposition which would have dismayed ordinary men. His temper was never ruffled. – his exertions were never relaxed, - nor did he suffer his hopes ever to flag; and though he had many opponents, not one of them ever ventured to question the purity of his motives, or to deny the inflexible integrity and beautiful consistency of his character. No one could come in contact with Sir Andrew Agnew, without feeling that there stood the Christian and the gentleman. “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord; from henceforth they rest from their labours, and their work do follow them.” The loss of Sir Andrew Agnew will be deeply felt by his coadjutors in the Sabbath cause. His counsel was always willingly tendered, and always highly prized; while his example stimulated and encouraged all around him. But the “Lord of the Sabbath” still lives; and we trust the friends of the Sabbath will view the loss of their fellow labourer, which they so deeply deplore, as a call to redouble their efforts in behalf of a cause to which he had so entirely devoted all his energies. Sir Andrew was born in 1793. His mother was the sixth child of Lord Kinsale, the premier baron of Ireland. – the title having been created in 1181. Sir Andrew succeeded his father in 1809; and is now succeeded by his son, Captain Agnew, who in 1846 married the daughter of the Earl of Gainsborough.

(From the Edinburgh Evening Post)

It is with much regret that we intimate the death of Sir Andrew Agnew, of Lochnaw Baronet. The Hon. Gentleman expired on Thursday night, at eight o’clock, at his house Rutland Square, Edinburgh. Sir Andrew, near the commencement of last month, had had an attack of fever, which left much debility; but we believe the stroke of death was unexpected by his family and friends. The deceased is succeeded in his title and estates by his eldest son Captain Agnew, married to the daughter of the Earl of Gainsborough. Sir Andrew was born in the year 1809. For some time he represented the Wigtown burghs in the House of Commons. Sir Andrew was brother in law to the late Sir James Carnegie of Southesk. The death of the deceased will excite much interest in society, and in the religious world will be greatly deplored. Sir Andrew, as a public man, was best known for his sustained active endeavours to prevent the desecration of the Lords day by secular labour, especially by the running of trains on railway lines. In this walk of duty, Sir Andrew evinced untiring activity, and even when worsted in his endeavours returned again to the field with renewed strength and more animated perseverance. To his cause he attracted a large amount of support cordially rendered both by the clergy and laity of this country. And while some men dissented from his conclusions as matter of argument, or opposed his aims from other causes, we believe his singleness of purpose was never questioned. No man who had not possessed the highest reputation of personal religion could have kept the position which he occupied in society, and we believe the respect accorded to Sir Andrew Agnew was amply merited by the virtue of his private life.

OBITUARY

MELANCHOLY AND FATAL ACCIDENT.

It is with deep regret that we have to announce, this week, the death of Mr John McCaig, farmer, Kilhilt, on Friday inst. under the following melancholy circumstances: - It appears that Mr McCaig had a bull, which had been tied up in the house for several weeks, but during the night of Thursday he had broke loose, and remained so till Friday morning, and was in consequence restless and considerably irritated. About 9 o’clock on Friday morning the bull was let out of the house, and Mr M’Caig drove him to a field where some other cattle were grazing. After fastening the gate, Mr M’Caig went to look after some sheep in another part of the field. As he was passing, the bull came up to him, and began smelling his clothes, apparently more in play than otherwise, when suddenly the animal tossed him from the ground with a single effort, and left him lying insensible. Mr M’Caig, who lived only a short time after the occurrence, made some efforts to speak, but his words were inaudible. Assistance was very soon procured, and a little blood was drawn from his arm, but in vain – the vital spark had fled. Mr McCaig’s loss is much deplored in this neighbourhood, where he was universally respected and esteemed as an obliging and benevolent neighbour. His services were often required in giving assistance with his neighbours’ affairs, especially in the capacity of arbiter, and in such cases, so much was his judgment and integrity relied on, that the most litigious gladly acquiesced in his decision. He was one that delighted to do good by stealth, and many acts of charity and benevolence begin now to be talked of, which in his life he would have wished to remain concealed. He was a man upright in all his dealings, and was esteemed an excellent farmer. His possessions were managed with great skill, and he executed many improvements in a very judicious manner. On Tuesday last his remains were carried to the grave, attended by a very large concourse of the most respectable people in the district. We understand the Rev. Mr Neilson, of Rothesay, will, on Sabbath first, preach his funeral sermon, in the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Stranraer, of which he was a distingished [sic] member.

THE LATE MR M’CAIG FARMER AT KILHILT.

The awfully sudden death of this estimable man, who was killed instantaneously by a bull, near his own house, on the morning of Friday last, and whose funeral, on Tuesday, was attended by more than 300 men of Galloway, to the church-yard of Inch, has produced a deep sensation in the whole district, and has spread sorrow throughout a very wide circle of relations and friends. There are few men in his station in society who have enjoyed more of the influence and esteem which are acquired by sound principle, when combined with practical sagacity, and with quiet prudence, confidential discretion, and a generous kindness of feeling in the intercourse of social life. Brought up in the fellowship of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, of which, during many years previous to his death, he was a much respected and useful elder, he manifested a lively interest in the advancement of sound principles, and in the extension of Christian feeling and habits of life, among the members of other churches: and he was ever ready to aid and encourage them in works of Christian usefulness, uniting with them cordially, as far as was consistent with his own principles and position. He enjoyed largely the Christian fellowship and esteem of men of various religious denominations; and he was no less favoured. And but for his willingness to be useful, it might almost be said he was burdened with the confidence of men in various stations in life, who appealed to him in cases of delicacy or difficulty. Many poor men will miss him, as a ready helper, and a faithful judicious counsellor. Many that are not poor will miss him too. He was one element of peace, good order, sobriety, and cheerful contentment in society – a composer of many strifes, yet quietly firm in maintaining what he regarded as right. May our country have thousands like him.
