A Brief History of Chapter and Verse Divisions
HISTORY OF CHAPTER AND VERSE DIVISIONS • Pre-Babylonian Captivity (586 BCE): Bible divided into sections, with Pentateuch divided into 154 sections used in a 3-year reading cycle. • Pre-Dead Sea Scrolls (before 300 BCE—100 CE): Bible divided into sections now called parashoth. Larger sections were indicated by beginning a new line in the scroll, smaller sections by a space within the line. This practice is continued in Masoretic texts1 (oldest known Hebrew Bibles, from 7th-10th centuries CE). Samech (Hebrew <s>) between sentences = small paragraph; pe (Hebrew <p>) between sentences indicates a large paragraph. • Mishnaic period (ca. 200 CE): Verse divisions made within the parashoth when Aramaic translations were introduced into the Hebrew text; the amount of Hebrew that preceded the Aramaic translation became the verse division. After about 500 CE these were indicated by the soph pasuq, a cantillation mark resembling a colon used after the last word of every verse and indicated a full stop, or a period. (Mishnah is a kind of commentary in Judaism.) • Pre-Council of Nicea (325 CE): New Testament divided into kephalia (lit. headings, i.e., paragraphs) for reference; this system no longer survives. • Ca. 1205: Stephen Langton, an Englishman teaching at the University of Paris, later Archbishop of Canterbury, divides Vulgate Bible into modern chapters. In 1244-48, Hugh of St. Cher, a professor of theology at the University of Paris, produces the first Biblical concordance because chapter divisions now make it possible to search for passages in the Bible. In the 1205-1500’s, manuscript and printed bibles (after 1455, Gutenberg Bible) often use a system of letters A-G to further divide chapters into sections.

QL 97 (2016) 141-170 doi: 10.2143/QL.97.3.3197403 © 2016, all rights reserved THE LATIN VULGATE AS AN “AUXILIARY TOOL” OF TRANSLATION Historical Perspectives on Liturgiam Authenticam On March 28, 2001, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Disci- pline of the Sacraments under the leadership of Cardinal Jorge Medina Estévez released the Fifth Instruction for the implementation of Sacrosanc- tum concilium. Entitled Liturgiam authenticam, “On the Use of Vernacular Languages in the Publication of the Books of the Roman Liturgy,” it pre- scribes the use of the Latin Vulgate as an “auxiliary tool” in the textual production of Scriptural translations for the vernacular liturgical books (no. 24). With regard to the vernacular lectionary in particular, it adds that “[i]f the biblical translation from which the Lectionary is composed exhib- its readings that differ from those set forth in the Latin liturgical text, it should be borne in mind that the Nova Vulgata Editio is the point of refer- ence as regards the delineation of the canonical text. Thus, in the transla- tion of the deuterocanonical books and wherever else there may exist var- ying manuscript traditions, the liturgical translation must be prepared in accordance with the same manuscript tradition that the Nova Vulgata has followed” (no. 37).1 This post-conciliar policy of Biblical translation soon became a matter of controversy. In a letter to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops dated August 13, 2001, the Executive Board of the Catholic Biblical Association of America aired its criticism against the curial document: Our main concerns have to do with the presentation of the Nova Vulgata as the model for Scripture translations in various ways and the provisions that translations conform to it, even to the point of requiring conformity to the Nova Vulgata in the tradition of original language manuscripts used for translation.

The Instruction gives various directives for the translation of biblical and liturgical texts. Thirty years after the appearance of the first vernacular editions of the liturgical books, it seemed appropriate to revise them in the light of experience. The Instruc- tion also contains the canonical norms to be followed in editing and publishing liturgi- cal books. Not everyone has welcomed the Instruction. Exegetes1 as well as litur- gists2 have expressed varying degrees of hesitation. In the light of these criticisms I offer here a fresh reading and evaluation of the second part of the Instruction. If I may begin with a personal recollection: In the 1980’s I was working with two other Jesuits in a refugee camp in Southeast Asia. French, American and German, we celebrated Mass together every morning in English. Before Mass, we had prayed the Liturgy of the Hours – each of us, in the best Jesuit tradition, by himself - the Frenchman in French, the American in English and I myself, since in those days I was still destined for Patrology, in Latin. In the Mass I would hear again in English the Oratio that I had prayed earlier in Latin.

The Septuagint and the Masoretic Text in the Orthodox Church(es)* Alexandru Mihăilă** In this article, I intend to survey the reception of versions of the Old Testament in the Orthodox churches, focusing on the Greek, Russian and Romanian Church, respectively. While Western biblical scholars gave precedence to the Hebrew text over the Septuagint, in the Orthodox world one can see a tension in the relationship between the two textual witnesses and sometimes, even recently, there are voices which tend to give the Septuagint total authority in the Church. Orthodox scholars in the field of Old Testament studies usually resort to the Hebrew text, but especially scholars from outside this field tend to promote the Septuagint as the Old Testament of the Orthodox Church. I shall use the argument of authority, which is improper for scientific argumentation, but it suits my research, as I try to understand the confessional positions held within Eastern Orthodoxy. Consequently, if a certain saint, acknowledged as such by a national Orthodox Church or by the entire Eastern Orthodox communion, embraces a particular view on this subject, this bears significantly on the issue. Keywords: Orthodox Church, Bible, Septuagint, Masoretic Text, Synodal Bible. Recent positions of Romanian theologians I begin with an overview of the Romanian Orthodox Church, which I know better. Immediately before and especially in the aftermath of the December Revolution, the future archbishop Bartolomeu Anania worked on an impor- tant biblical project. The result, published in 2001, was a new translation of the Bible, even if Archbishop Anania called it a “revised edition according to the Septuagint”.

L 1-) ~O)L} · H3CJ The Vulgate has historically been the principle Latin translation ofthe Bible, in use since the fourth century A.D. It was the standard translation for the Roman Catholic Church until the 1970S when it, prompted by changes called for in the Second Vatican Council, adopted a new textual standard for its liturgy, called the Nova Vulgata Bibliorum Sacrorum Editio. Despite this, the Vulgate remains a testament to fourth century biblical scholarship. Using a representative text from both the majority and minority Greek New Testament traditions, I compare the text of the Nova Vulgata with that of the older Vulgate in John 18, examining the relationship ofthese texts. Violations of Vatican Directives Regarding Liturgy in the "Revised Divine Liturgy" promulgated by the Byzantine-Ruthenian Catholic Metropolitan Church of Pittsburgh 6 January 2007 May 2007 Background In the 1930s the Ruthenian Catholic bishops in Europe and North America petitioned Rome to prepare a normative set of liturgical books. The Vatican prepared and published these books beginning with the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom in 1941 through the Archieraticon in 1973 (the Great Trebnyk, which requires much special research, is (hopefully) still in preparation). Today these books are the official standard for all the Catholic Churches of the Ruthenian recension (Carpatho-Ruthenian, Ukrainian, Slovak, Romanian and Hungarian). They are also the standard used by the corresponding Eastern Orthodox Churches (most notably here in America the Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church in America and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the USA). In 1964/1965 an English language translation of the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom was approved by Rome and promulgated. In 1976 an English language translation of the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great was promulgated. These two books are not perfect but they are quite good. The rubrics are particularly accurate. These books have become the normative liturgicons in the Byzantine-Ruthenian Church. They are also in common use in some parishes of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in America, the Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church in America, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and other places. On January 6, 2007 the Council of Hierarchs promulgated the Revised Divine Liturgies of St. John Chrysostom and St. Basil the Great. It was hoped that these new editions would correct the relatively few errors of the 1964/1965 Chrysostom Liturgicon and the 1976 edition of the Basil Liturgicon.
