  • New China and Its Qiaowu: the Political Economy of Overseas Chinese Policy in the People’S Republic of China, 1949–1959
1 The London School of Economics and Political Science New China and its Qiaowu: The Political Economy of Overseas Chinese policy in the People’s Republic of China, 1949–1959 Jin Li Lim A thesis submitted to the Department of International History of the London School of Economics for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, London, September 2016. 2 Declaration: I certify that the thesis I have presented for examination for the MPhil/PhD degree of the London School of Economics and Political Science is solely my own work other than where I have clearly indicated that it is the work of others (in which case the extent of any work carried out jointly by me and any other person is clearly identified in it). I warrant that this authorisation does not, to the best of my belief, infringe the rights of any third party. I declare that my thesis consists of 98,700 words. 3 Abstract: This thesis examines qiaowu [Overseas Chinese affairs] policies during the PRC’s first decade, and it argues that the CCP-controlled party-state’s approach to the governance of the huaqiao [Overseas Chinese] and their affairs was fundamentally a political economy. This was at base, a function of perceived huaqiao economic utility, especially for what their remittances offered to China’s foreign reserves, and hence the party-state’s qiaowu approach was a political practice to secure that economic utility.

  • English-Chinese Translation of Foreign Movie Titles Ying-Ying GU Xiamen University Tan Kah Kee College, Zhangzhou, Fujian, China [email protected]
2017 4th International Conference on Advanced Education and Management (ICAEM 2017) ISBN: 978-1-60595-519-3 English-Chinese Translation of Foreign Movie Titles Ying-Ying GU Xiamen University Tan Kah Kee College, Zhangzhou, Fujian, China [email protected] Keywords: Translation of Foreign Movie Titles, Requirements, Translation Methods, Rules, Values. Abstract. Through the analysis of the phenomenon of English-Chinese translation of foreign movie titles, this article discusses the rules, principles and values applied in translating English movie titles in China. Simultaneously, the article also analyzes the different forms of English movie title translation in use in China. Introduction Since the opening-up the Chinese cinema market to foreign film studios in 1995, an increasing number of foreign films are now accessible to average Chinese audiences. Through the usage of multimedia such as VCR Cassette, VCD, and DVD, foreign films’ availability in China has increased significantly. Moreover, the advances of streaming media, peer-to-peer file sharing, and online movie websites all provide additional channels through which foreign films can be distributed to Chinese movie spectators. Out of all the foreign language films, movies in English, especially those produced by large Hollywood studios have been the most accessible and commercially successful. However, with the consistent growth of the Chinese economy, and the country’s entry into WTO, the Chinese cinema market is becoming increasingly competitive. Selecting an appropriate Chinese title for a foreign language film that can stand out from the crowd is now a top priority for movie studios. The difference between success and failure of a foreign film can be just a tiny mistake in the translation process of the title.

CHINESE BUSINESS AND NATIONALIST ACTIVITIES IN INTER-WAR SINGAPORE, 1919-19411 Huei-ying Kuo2 Dept. of Sociology State University of New York at Binghamton [email protected] Abstract: This paper examines the rationale and impact of accelerating Chinese- led anti-Japanese nationalist activities in Singapore from the late 1920s within the context of Chinese sub-ethnic cleavages and business networks in Southeast Asia. More specifically, despite the fact that leading Chinese business elites were mobilized by the nationalist calls to confront Japanese interests, not only Japanese agents but also some Chinese were targeted.

Nationalist China in the Postcolonial Philippines: Diasporic Anticommunism, Shared Sovereignty, and Ideological Chineseness, 1945-1970s Chien Wen Kung Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Chien Wen Kung All rights reserved ABSTRACT Nationalist China in the Postcolonial Philippines: Diasporic Anticommunism, Shared Sovereignty, and Ideological Chineseness, 1945-1970s Chien Wen Kung This dissertation explains how the Republic of China (ROC), overseas Chinese (huaqiao), and the Philippines, sometimes but not always working with each other, produced and opposed the threat of Chinese communism from the end of World War II to the mid-1970s. It is not a history of US- led anticommunist efforts with respect to the Chinese diaspora, but rather an intra-Asian social and cultural history of anticommunism and nation-building that liberates two close US allies from US- centric historiographies and juxtaposes them with each other and the huaqiao community that they claimed. Three principal arguments flow from this focus on intra-Asian anticommunism. First, I challenge narrowly territorialized understandings of Chinese nationalism by arguing that Taiwan engaged in diasporic nation-building in the Philippines. Whether by helping the Philippine military identify Chinese communists or by mobilizing Philippine huaqiao in support of Taiwan, the ROC carved out a semi-sovereign sphere of influence for itself within a foreign country. It did so through institutions such as schools, the Kuomintang (KMT), and the Philippine-Chinese Anti-Communist League, which functioned transnationally and locally to embed the ROC into Chinese society and connect huaqiao to Taiwan.

DIASPORA AND DIPLOMACY: CHINA, INDONESIA AND THE COLD WAR, 1945-1967 A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Taomo Zhou August 2015 © 2015 Taomo Zhou DIASPORA AND DIPLOMACY: CHINA, INDONESIA AND THE COLD WAR, 1945-1967 Taomo Zhou, Ph. D. Cornell University 2015 Grounded in multilingual governmental and private sources, this dissertation redefines twentieth- century China beyond the territorial boundary of the Chinese nation-state. Even though China and Indonesia are not neighboring countries with geographic borderlines, the existence of approximately 2.5 million ethnic Chinese in Indonesia gave rise to an invisible and porous social frontier that could be transgressed more easily and oftentimes accidentally, especially during a period when the Chinese Communist Party’s regime legitimacy was challenged by its Nationalist rival. At the level of the Chinese state’s relationship to the overseas Chinese, Chinese political elites used transnational migrant networks and the global circulation of media to rally popular support and affirm political legitimacy. At the level of the overseas Chinese’s relationship to the Chinese state, the ethnic Chinese were active participants in civic campaigns launched by the pro- Chinese Communist and pro-Chinese Nationalist factions in Indonesia. Both sides claimed that all ethnic Chinese owed their loyalty to China’s sole legitimate center—Beijing according to the Communists or Taipei according to the Nationalists. At the level of state-to-state diplomacy, this continuous politicization of the ethnic Chinese shook the foundation of the Sino-Indonesian strategic partnership.
