Steers to £1385 Heifers to £1290

Store cattle of all breed and ages were a phenomenal trade throughout Friday’s sale with the promise of spring bringing several fresh faces to the sale ring. Top price of the day came in the way of a couple of stunning Limousin steers (24m) from Rosie Fishleigh of Cross at £1385 apiece, they were also awarded first prize in the steer section of our second spring show and sale of continental cattle. Rosie also sold two smart Charolais steer (24m) for £1360 a head. Next in line was the better of a fine run of forward outlying cattle from Messrs Ward & Hewings, , a cracking Limousin bullock (24m) which eased to £1365, a pair of grand South Devon Steers (23m) off the same farm rose to £1295 and their heifer of the same age & breed fetched a creditable £1260. Regular consigners Robert & Janet Legg , sold a pen of four strong Simmental bullocks (averaging 23m) for £1350 and a pair for £1320 whilst an Angus steer (26m) from Graham Tancock, reached £1330 and a bunch of five Blue’s (22m) easily got £1325 for John & Jenny Squire of (second prize winners in the show steer section). Big South Devon steers (30m) saw £1300 for Anthony Luscombe of and £1235 (21m) for Martin Perryman of . Further Limousin bred bullocks all around the two year old mark sold to £1285 for Peter Hooper of , £1260 for Brian Vallance, and £1245 for Andrew Lawrence up from Mullion. Best Holstein sorts (27m) peaked at £990 for David Withers of . Store heifers topped at an creditable £1290 for Peter Hooper for a pair eye catching Limousin’s (23m) which were awarded second place in the heifer section of the show while first placed females (in the show) looked a good price at £1200 a life for a tremendous pen of five Limousin’s from Gary Dunn of . £1200 was also achieved by the Keast family of with a well covered Limousin heifer (25m) with a similar sort close at £1195 for Edward Tarr of . Plenty of quality beef bred younger stores on offer and selling to a premium with Limousin steers (15m) to £1060 for Tom Cleave of ,) a pair of very decent Charolais bullocks (14m) from Martin Perryman reaching £1040 a head and a trio of well turned out Angus steers making £990 a life for Quiney & Spears of Moretonhampstead also a later born Limousin heifer (15m) also looked a good price at £935 for Ian & Viv steer of Bow. An excellent entry of fifty Organic store from John & Sue Kittow, Silverton peaked at £925 for a bunch of ten Dairy Shorthorn steers (26-30m)

Ballistic! Trade red hot for a good number on offer with more cattle needed to satisfy buyer demand.

Steers topped at £890 for cracking Limousin crosses (12m) from Leo & Janette Bradford of , a wonderful run of cattle from DT & VJ Pyle of North Tawton saw Simmental cross steers attain £850 (11m), Limousin steers realised the same figure (12m), with others reaching £845 & £840. South Devon steers from Charlie Chick of Okehampton met a tremendous trade topping at £815 (12m), with others to £805. David & Sue Warren of achieved £810 for Charolais steers (12m), Simmental steers (12m) from Mark Stephens of attained £795, whilst superb Limousin crosses from David & Michelle Wootton of Bovey Tracey realised £790. Younger sorts from Paul Brimacombe and family of attained £730 (8m), with other good sorts this time from FG Gluyas & Partners of Camborne attaining £720 for Limousin cross steers (9m). Heifers topped £730 for well-bred Limousin crosses from DT & VJ Pyle, with others to £710. David & Sue Warren achieved £700 for Charolais heifers (12m), whilst Sandra & James Harvey of hit £695 again for Charolais heifers (7m). Younger heifers this time from Paul Brimacombe and family attained £565 (9m). Don’t miss this trade! 183 ORPHAN LAMBS

Just one short of last week’s number at 183 orphan lambs, continue to seek decent demand in front of a keen group of buyers. Bigger stronger lambs sold to £42 (x2) for TE & J Middleton & Son of , £40 for John Goodman of South Brent, £38 (x2) for S Boston of Pennymoor and £30 for Steve Caunter of Harbertonford. A good run of six from Michael Ayre of all sold for £26 as four vendors saw a total of 14 lambs sell at £24 to help maintain a strong average of £15 for all forward.

905 STORE HOGGS

Just a few hoggs less than last week at 905 were topped by Mike Waycott of Ashburton with heavyweight Ram Hoggs at £138 & £119.50, followed by strong Suffolk x ewe hoggs from the Jordan family of at £135, £129 (x2) & £127, who also picked up first prize in our anniversary show. Similarly the Davie Farm Partnership of reached £120 with the second prize pen of hoggs and sold another at £115. Another dozen or so pens over £110 and too many to mention over £100, despite the falling prime hogg trade. Numbers are staying up well for the time of year, although hoggs cutting their teeth is still an issue this year, some buyers are beginning to slow up or stop. I would urge anyone with hoggs left to sell to market them asap. Hoggs averaged £85.

155 GRAZING EWES

155 grazers sold to £127.50 for a trio from DW, DM & MW Risdon of Broadwoodkelly, £123.50 for R Williams of Hemerdon, £119 & £106 for WR Uren of and £109 for RD & JP Cannon of . Av. £73.

490 EWES & 696 LAMBS (1186 LIVES)

A massive line-up, far greater than expeced of 490 ewes with 696 lambs were a steady but not altogether disappointing trade. Best keenly sought after rising to £240 for a super Charollais double from Steve Parish of followed closely by DW, DM & MW Risdon with similarly smart goods at £238, CE Burrough of saw their best at £228, C & D Ford of Cheldon reached £220 and Robert & Christine Steer of Avonwick sold their best double at £219. Majority of doubles were £140 to £170 with the better end £175-£210. Plainer, leaner sorts from £90 to £135 depending on breed, strength and body condition. Singles sold to £172 for a fine pair of Cheviot Mule young ewes from Ian Pedrick of and £170 (x2) & £160 for Mule Hogg singles from Robert Partridge of . Other ewe singles from £135 to £155 for the better end, average sorts from £110 to £132 and smaller or fragile sorts upward of £80. Hill bred sorts in keen demand with a run of well farmed Beulah couples from George King of Glastonbury selling to £131 for the doubles and £97 for singles.

Vacancy at the Livestock Market Receptionist (maternity cover)

The role: Kivells are looking for a full time Market Receptionist to cover a period of maternity leave at the busy Holsworthy Livestock Market. The successful candidate will work on reception together with undertaking administration for the agricultural department. Likely duties will include assisting clients both face to face and by telephone, supporting the cattle auctioneer, preparing catalogues for sale, market reports and advertising.

The candidate: will be bright, cheerful, willing to help and quick to learn. The successful candidate will possess excellent customer service skills, be organised, computer literate and be able to work on their own. A background knowledge in agriculture is an advantage.

This is an interesting and varied role requiring a candidate with a strong work ethic and the ability to adapt.

Working hours: Monday to Friday 8.45am to 5.00pm. Additional hours for some Saturday sales will also be required.

An extra sale of pigs today to celebrate six years since we took on selling at Exeeter saw a nice entry which takes the total number of pigs sold by Kivells in the last seven days to 429.

Just a handful of medium weight sows in from Chris Hill of Wellington saw a useful trade very much in-line with last Friday’s market. Chris topped at £90 with others between £82-£88. Overall top of the day was £100 given for a saddleback sow in from Messrs Serpell.

A nice run of prime pigs saw new buyers present and topped at £100 (x2) for Messrs Serpell with others from Messrs Whitaker at £95 (x4) going to one butcher near . Messrs Clarke came up from St Wenn in with a team of nine lightweight prime pigs which raced away to a top of £88.

A small but quality entry of young stores saw the best of a tidy run of white pigs (6 weeks) to £40 in from Messrs Hornby of Millcroft, a price matched by Mr Amos of . Messrs Sully topped the coloured stores at £30.

Another excellent entry of Dairy Cattle for our 6th Anniversary Show & Sale saw a very mixed quality entry with very few best quality forward to make any high prices. The best of the commercial section topped at £1620 for a Jersey cross heifer from Messrs RE & D Snell of which sold exceptionally well and the demand for those hardier grazing types continues to be strong. Other Jersey cross heifers sold to £1600 for Bruce, Jenny & Jess Ravenhill-White of Umberleigh. The final portion to disperse the herd for Raymond & Tony Batten of Bridport sold well to a top of £1500 for a fresh heifer with others to £1480 & £1450. Other British Friesian heifers sold to £1500 for Ken & Cathie Cottey of Whimple who also sold a Montbeliarde at £1400. Cows topped at £1450 for a second calver from Messrs SEJ Tapp & Sons of Tiverton. In-calf heifers topped at £1350 for Edward Gay who also sold a Montbeliarde at £1250. Served heifers to £740 (x3) for David Tucker & Partners of who sold bulling heifers to £590. British Friesian yearling heifers sold to £470 (x5) for Ken & Cathie Cottey. Heifer calves were harder work today with the best to £160 for Raymond & Tony Batten.

The Gold Top Sale of Pedigree Jerseys & Guernseys sold to an easier trade although quality not just as good as we have seen before. Top of the day was 2100gns for an outstanding heifer “Bluegrass Tequila Java VG86 by Tower Vue Prime Tequila, she sold having calved back in November with nine generations of VG & EX dams behind her from Barry, Jenny & Claire Daw of Hertfordshire who also sold a second calver at 1400gns and heifers at 1380gns & 1320gns. Bruce, Jenny & Jess Ravenhill saw their best young cow “Whitenhill Actionmans Pukenui” by Bluegrass Lord Actionman take the Show Championship and she went on to make 1800gns. Another second calver from the same herd by Q Impuls made 1550gns. A super second calver “Maundrils Excitation Bella” from Maundrils Farm Partnership of Highbridge sold well at 1600gns with the same vendors selling three exceptional heifer calves by Guimo Joel & Oliver P at 300gns apiece. In-calf heifers topped at 1200gns for Edward Gay of .
