Jack Jackson is now the permanent chair of Nordab. The representative is to be confirmed. ACTION: BB to discuss with Jack Jackson of who will represent Nordab at future Advisory Group meetings. 2) Matters arising from ESB co-ordinator update All agreed that the first Advisory Group meeting was a success. BB confirmed that Petroc will seek to continue to find funding for the co-ordinator post. Nicky’s current contract expires 31st August 2019. DD confirmed that there will be changes, and expecting a different administration in charge, within both local authorities, after the local elections in May. There will then be an opportunity to promote the ESB to the new full council. BB discussed about the LEP work on Skills Advisory Panels and a view that ESB’s would be an integral part of the governance for Skills Advisory Panels. ACTION: BB will pursue this with the LEP. Other ESB’s in the area TS and MM had been trying to arrange a meeting with the Plymouth ESB, who are supported by their local council. BB had met with colleagues from Mid Devon Economic Development team and they are seeking to find out how we are operating, as there are getting no value or connectivity from their ESB which is the Greater Exeter.

I am writing to confirm the tcome of the FE Commissioner Structure and Prospect · Appraisal of your Colle , and to set out the actions we now expect the College to take to ensure the Appraisal outcomes, and the FE Commissioner's earlier assessment, are fully implemented. I am very grateful for the support that the FE Commissioner has received from yourself and the College during the Appraisal, and the steps you have taken to date to respond to the recommendations in my predecessor's letter of 22 April 2014. As you are aware, in light of the notification by the Skills Funding Agency that the College's financial health is inadequate, the FE Commissioner reviewed the position of your College between 17 and 28 March 2014. The FE Commissioner acknowledged the capacity and capability of the governance and leadership to deliver financial recovery in the short term, but concluded that the College could not continue to operate on its own. The FE Commissioner was asked to lead a Structure and Prospects Appraisal to determine the way forward for land-based provision in the area. This Appraisal was completed in September 2014. I have now received the FE Commissioner's Appraisal report - a copy of which is attached.

GARDEN, CRAFT & HOBBY FAYRE On the morning of Saturday 28th July, at 11 am, the sun shone down as our Town Crier, Mrs Jackie Edwards officially opened the 10th annual show and although it was a little blustery, many people and stall holders got the day underway. In the exhibits marquee we had a fantastic display of handcrafted items, homemade cakes, preserves, home grown flowers and fruit and veg. as well as some superb amateur photography, all of which were put on display by many of our truly talented residents. Presentations of cups, shields and certificates were made by Mayor, Cllr Ron Peart accompanied by his wife, Mayoress June Peart, with the exception of the Kingsteignton Village Trust Cup, which was won by Ron himself and was presented by Town Clerk, Carol Lakin. Chairman's Message
2011 No. 1 February Reg. Charity No.228966 CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE It is with regret that I have to announce that two of our long standing volunteers have resigned. Peter Reay and Ian Farrell between them have served the Society for over twenty-five years. Peter has been editing the Devon Bird Report from 1999 and wrote a section prior to that year. His keenness to ensure accuracy with each report is a testament to him. I worked closely with Peter for six years whilst County Recorder and I know the loss of his service to the Society will be greatly missed. Ian, will be known to members in recent years as our webmaster a job which he performs with enthusiasm and dedication. I first met Ian when acting as legal advisor to the Society on the wording of its new constitution when I first noticed his commitment, business acumen and a keenness to get the job done, a style he showed throughout his service as a trustee on Council, as Chairman of the Publishing Group and right up to present as Vice Chairman. On behalf of the Society I would like to thank both Peter and Ian for their service to the Society and wish them the very best for the future. Whilst Chairman I have set myself various tasks, last year it was the completion of the Birds of Devon book and ensuring the preparation of the Devon Tetrad Atlas was on a sound footing, both thankfully were achieved. This year my task is probably more difficult in that I will attempt to find volunteers to fill vacancies on Council and other posts that are vacant.

OUTSTANDING TEACHING, LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT TECHNICAL SKILLS NATIONAL PROGRAMME Interim case study on project led by South Devon College HOLLY VAUGHAN Managed by In partnership with BRUSHING UP “Brushing Up” is an innovative partnership lead by South Devon College (SDC). The partnership is made up of the following: − Six partner education providers; South Devon College, Cornwall College Group, PETROC College, City College Plymouth, Yeovil College and Gershwins Academy. − Five employer partners; Tom Chapman, Carol Caine, Take Two, RT Hair and Kumiega Skin Care Clinic. − One awarding body: City and Guilds Group Business. The project aims to reduce the skills gaps within the Hair and Beauty industry by enhancing teaching, learning and assessment approaches. Project stages 1. Identifying the skills gaps; both vocational and teaching, learning and assessment (TLA) focussed. 2. Undertaking training and development days; hosted by each of the education partners. 3. Dissemination of the training and development days back to the teams of each education partner. Learning plans and resources developed. 4. Delivery of the new learning plans and resources to learners. 5. Evaluation of the project and future plans. Progress to date Identifying the skills gaps The initial stage of the project was to identify the skills gaps. To capture this data and to provide a baseline for the project, the project produced two surveys for the education partners to complete.
