A huge entry of calves being the biggest in the Westcountry saw a big divide between the ‘best and the rest’. Overall top call of the day was £460 given for a trio of Blue Steer Stirks in from M & I Vanstone & Sons of Woolsery. John & Mark Elliott of Bradford hit £450 and £442 for Blues. The other stirks (33) were all very much sought after and easy to sell.

The baby calf trade was extremely strong for the best and much more selective for the rest. The Folk2Folk champion calf came in from PH Collins Partnership hitting a tremendous £435 for a Limousin bull with the best of a lovely run of (25-35 day old blue calves) at £385 whilst Tim Isaac of and Peter Heywood of hit £380 for Limousins and Blues.

A tremendous run of Herefords topped at £262 (X3) for ’30 day olds’ from Andrew Oke of Bradford. With the best of the Angus Bulls at £250 for Messrs Luxton & Son of . Some nice Simmentals forward topped at £290 for Messrs Cleave of Launcells.

Messrs Collins also topped the heifer pens with a lovely red heifer (5weeks) at £340 with the best Hereford heifers at £260 for Edward Richardson of and Limousins from Heywood Farm Partnership at £260.

The Holstein and dairy type trade was very selective with only the stronger calves/stirks in demand. Top call was £150 for older calves from Middle Huddisford with younger black and whites from Jeff Endacott also at £150. Baby Holsteins ranged from £2 – £52 with buyers not really interested in small and plain calves.

Numbers are still tight this week but surprisingly the trade jumped £50 per bullock with a large number of buyers keen to buy a superb consignment of warm British Blue Steers from Mr W Prouse, Frizenham which saw a top of £1080 (5) with an average of £1042. (16) younger grass British Blues from Messrs Kirk of sold extremely well with 26 steers and Heifers 18-20 months averaging £908, Steers to £1030. The top price of the day this week was £1100 for a shapely British Blue from Mr North of Bratton . Several good bunches of Aberdeen Angus & Hereford Steers this week saw most bunches over £900 with more required.

Few forward heifers this week saw British Blues top at £885 for 6 18 month Dairy x British Blues grass cattle. Another strong Holstein trade with a top call of £835 for 3 from Messrs Andrew of with other Holsteins with frame to £700-£795. Younger Holsteins in keen demand to £580. More are needed.

Young 12 month Continentals and Natives saw a ferocious trade with 12 month Simmental x Holstein steers from Messrs Dilling of to £800 with others to £775 and heifers to £700. Young native steers saw 4 Herefords from Messrs Daniel of St Giles at £665 and others from Messrs Jopling of to £655.

This week’s winner of the Lark Plant was awarded to Mr North, of for a British Blue Steer at £1100.

Kivells notice to Store Cattle Vendors It has come to our attention in recent months that a large number of in calf Store Heifers are being reported, and because of this the vendors are having to pay large vet bills and cost of losses to the purchaser. In previous years we have found that vendors who have scanned their Heifers empty at the time of their TB test, have had a stronger trade on the day, and that has covered their cost of scanning, based on this although it’s voluntary and not compulsory to scan your Heifers, we would highly recommend it. On talking to purchasers they would be more than happy to give a little extra with the guarantee of empty Heifers.

GRAZING COWS – 11 am The top call was £525 for a young lean South Devon from Auctioneer: David Kivell – 07899 960272 Messrs Bailey of Launcells.

Following a ten day period where we have sold over 1000 Dairy Cattle to a strong trade, today’s small entry saw a busy ring of buyers but lacklustre bidding. Top quality Heifers with good yields topped at £1700 for ‘Kenham Jackboy Aura 16’ a freshly calved Heifer yielding 36.5Kgs sold on behalf of Mr K Grabham, Highampton. ‘Poltreworgey Helitrope’ a freshly calved Heifer yielding 33Kgs sold at £1520 on behalf of Mr A Hawken, Port Isaac. A good run of freshly calved Heifers from Messrs S Taylor Farming Ltd, topped at £1350. Tidy 25Kgs Heifers looked good value today with buyers wanting higher yielding Heifers. A 2nd Calving Cow from Mr T Hawken, Port Isaac yielding 34Kgs sold at £1300.

An In Calf Cow due June on behalf of DG & VM Hale, Bridgerule sold at £800 with Heifer Calves from Mr R Gillbard of Launceston selling at £100.

Rural Reflection March 2019

BPS and Countryside Stewardship - The knowns and the unknowns of the New Scheme World

The Kivells Professional team are always keeping up to date on what is happening with the Common Agricultural

Policy going forward which can be quite a task! There are many items that we think we know, subject to a Brexit deal, however there are many other unknown aspects that will be forthcoming in future months and years. The Government has pledged to commit the same cash total in funds for farm support until the end of this parliament and funding is guaranteed for the full lifetime of any agreement signed by 31st December 2020 which is encouraging.

The Current Scheme World – Basic Payment Scheme We are aware that the 2019 Basic Payment Scheme will continue in a similar format with the 2020 Basic Payment Scheme application likely to follow suit. Going forward from 2021, it is expected that the Basic Payment Scheme will reduce in value up until 2027 when it will be removed completely from 2028 onwards. Throughout that time period between 2021 and 2027, BPS will be delinked from eligible land and therefore not paid on a per hectare basis. We are unaware when this will be and what this will mean for farmers, but we will of course keep you updated as soon as we know more.

The Current Scheme World – Agri Environment With regards to the current Countryside Stewardship Agreements, this year applications are available as in previous years but will be slightly simpler with regards to requesting an application pack online and not all supporting information will be required to be submitted with the application, but just made available for claims and inspection. This application window opened on 18th February with application packs needing to be requested by 31st May and full applications submitted by 31st July 2019. These agreements will have a start date of 1st January 2020 and can include capital items including water capital works if you are in the catchment sensitive farming area.

The New Scheme World – Environmental Land Management Scheme (ELMS) From 2020 there is likely to be simpler Countryside Stewardship Agreements which may mean that the current wildlife offers that are currently available will be the only options going forward. This is a simple scheme with an online application and it is not competitive. However this scheme does not currently benefit from any capital works in addition. Going forward from 2020 the simplified Countryside Stewardship is likely to be available up until 2024 and during this time, pilots will be carried out for the new ELMS (Environmental Land Management Scheme). Then from 2025 onwards there will be a role out of the ELMS and from 2028 it will be available to all farmers and will replace the current Countryside Stewardship and Basic Payment Scheme payments, where landowners and farmers will get paid for the delivery of environmental services and benefits. It is likely to be an online application process with applications made throughout the year so no single, annual start date. This transition from BPS/CS to ELMS can be explained further in the table below.

Scheme 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 2026 2027 2028 As Phasing Phasing Phasing Phasing Phasing Phasing Phasing BPS NO BPS 2019 Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Year 6 Year 7

CS ‘Simplified’ version available NO CS Tests & Trials

ELMs Available Pilots Roll-out to all

There are still many unknowns with the Basic Payment Scheme, Countryside Stewardship and ELMS but it is looking to be very much environmental based going forward.

We will of course keep you updated on anything further but if you do have any questions or if you would like any help with this year’s Basic Payment Scheme or Countryside Stewardship application, please do not hesitate to contact one of the Kivells Professional teams.

Kivells Messaging 2019

Important News

Over the last 12 months we have been in discussions with our insurers and other advisors and listened to you, our sellers and buyers. The number of lots and attendees at our sales have grown over the last few years and we recognise that we need to adapt to meet and build on this increased demand for our services from both existing customers and new clients. At the same time we also recognise that our on farm dispersal sales and the Holsworthy Saturday collectives are not just sales but useful social events. The opportunity to meet and socialise mixing business and pleasure is essential in an age when farmers and many in the wider agricultural community work in isolation and then continue to be alone on the internet.

Getting the balance right between traditional and established ways of working and providing a safer environment is challenging particularly in market sites and farms. Kivells, Sellers and Buyers - we all have responsibilities and we at Kivells recognise that some improvements could be made. We have trialled some of these at Holsworthy and some have been well received and others less so. We ask that you bear with us as we put in place these changes many of which are primarily for your safety and to ensure you have the right information. Our staff will remind you and guide you and we ask that you respect the fact that they do so for your benefit and the benefit of other attendees. We have introduced new signage at our market sites and the messaging will be replicated at our on farm and other sales. In addition all our sale catalogues, to include Livestock Market sales, will include additional information for all attendees under a Notice to Purchasers heading. The Notice to Purchasers will act as useful reminders for our regular Sellers and Buyers and answer many of the frequently asked questions raised by new attendees.

To ensure that all attendees to our Livestock Market sales are made aware of our new Health & Safety message we will also be creating digital messages for our canteen displays etc. We will also include this messaging in our market reports.

In addition with this initiative we will be improving the information content on Kivells.com particularly under the Agriculture Heading. You will be able to easily find much of the information you will need regarding trading with Kivells and all sales to include Terms and Conditions and Sellers and Buyers Responsibilities. The intention here is to enable you to have and absorb this information ahead of any sale and help you to register, buy and sell with knowledge. Kivells Livestock sales are conducted under the 2017 Livestock Auctioneers Association Terms and Conditions and these will also be posted in all of our market offices.

As regards Machinery Sales Kivells currently operate under our own Terms and Conditions. However the Livestock Auctioneers Association has recently published its own version and we are currently reviewing our strategy in this regard. We will update you when a decision is made.

Thank you for your business to date and we look forward to partnering you in the future.
