The guide is written for both teachers and students alike, containing excerpts of information and activity ideas aimed at the grade 7 and 8 level of Canadian history. The CD is divided into four themes, and within each, lyrics and information pertaining to the topic are included. -

Historical Walking and Driving Tours: Victoria and the Victoria Trail This booklet contains a walking tour of the Vic- toria Settlement Historic Site and part of the Vic- toria Trail, and a driving tour of the Victoria Trail west from the Historic Site to Highway 38. The Historic Site is about 1 hour and 40 minutes from Edmonton, either by Highway 28 to Smoky Lake, or along the southern route via Highways 21, 15, 45 and Secondary Highway 855. A map of the tour route showing the location of the sites appears in the center of the booklet. Signs mark the location of the numbered sites described in this tour. Wherever possible, historic names have been used for buildings and sites, names that often do not correspond to their current owners or occupants. Please respect the privacy of property owners along the tour. Inclusion in this publication does not imply that a site is open to the public. Unless otherwise indicated, please view the posted sites from the road. 1 Introduction The first Europeans to venture into the area now known as Alberta were fur traders. CONTEXT DOCUMENT on the FUR TRADE OF NORTHEASTERN NORTH DAKOTA (Ecozone #16) 1738-1861 by Lauren W. Ritterbush April 1991 FUR TRADE IN NORTHEASTERN NORTH DAKOTA {ECOZONE #16). 1738-1861 The fur trade was the commercia1l medium through which the earliest Euroamerican intrusions into North America were made. Tl;ns world wide enterprise led to the first encounters between Euroamericar:is and Native Americans. These contacts led to the opening of l1ndian lands to Euroamericans and associated developments. This is especial,ly true for the h,istory of North Dakota. It was a fur trader, Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, Sieur de la Ve--endrye, and his men that were the first Euroamericans to set foot in 1738 on the lar;ids later designated part of the state of North Dakota. Others followed in the latter part of the ,eighteenth and first half of the nineteenth century. The documents these fur traders left behind are the earliest knowr:i written records pertaining to the region. These ,records tell much about the ear,ly commerce of the region that tied it to world markets, about the indigenous popu,lations living in the area at the time, and the environment of the region before major changes caused by overhunting, agriculture, and urban development were made. Trade along the lower Red River, as well as along, the Misso1.:1ri River, was the first organized E uroamerican commerce within the area that became North Dakota. Fortunately, a fair number of written documents pertainir.1g to the fur trade of northeastern North 0akota have been located and preserved for study. -

It is also used to describe the everyday life and behavior of people that flows from their beliefs. SaskCulture defines culture as “a dynamic system of acquired elements, with values, assumptions, conventions, beliefs and rules through which members of a group relate to each other and the world.” Culture defines who we are as a people; keeping alive our past, reflecting our values, articulating our dreams and fostering pride in who we are. It proclaims our existence and identity to the world. Arts Art is the expression of inspiration and imagination, from individual to collective, from grassroots to professional, and institution. Art reflects our culture, embraces our past, provides a window to our future to examine ourselves and our experiences, and transmits humanity’s knowledge of the world. The arts engage people as audience, creators or interpreters through access and education, and foster traditional to emerging art forms. Heritage Heritage is what we have received from the past. It shapes our present identity and provides insight for our future. Within the scope for SaskCulture, heritage includes a range of activities in the areas of stewardship, preservation, research, education and engagement. These activities exhibit a sensitivity to the Indigenous natural environment; the impact of the interaction between human activity and natural environments; and differing perspectives regarding objects, ideas, places and traditions. I' , I 1 /7 Red River Trails by Grace Flandrau Compliments of the Great Northern Railway The Red River of the North Red River Trails by Grace Flandrau Foreword There is a certain hay meadow in southwestern Minnesota; curiously enough this low-lying bit of prairie, often entirely submerged, happens to be an important height of land dividing the great water sheds of Hudson's Bay and Mississippi riv,er. I t lies between two lakes: One of these, the Big Stone, gives rise to the Minnesota river, whose waters slide down the long tobog gan of the Mississippi Valley to the Gulf of Mexico; from the other, Lake Traverse, flows the Bois de Sioux, a main tributary of the Red River of the North, which descends for over five. hundred miles through one of the richest valleys in the world to Lake Winnipeg and eventually to Hudson's Bay. In the dim geologic past, the melting of a great glacier ground up limestone and covered this valley with fertile deposits, while the glacial Lake Agassiz subsequently levelled it to a vast flat plain. Occasionally in spring when the rivers are exceptionally high, the meadow is flooded and becomes a lake. Then a boatman, travelling southward from the semi-arctic Hudson's Bay, could float over the divide and reach the Gulf of Mexico entirely by water route. The early travellers gave, romantic names to the rive.rs of the West, none more so, it seems to me, than Red River of the North, 3 with its lonely cadence, its suggestion of evening and the cry of wild birds in far off quiet places. -
