Strings 07 Madrid, June 25-29, 2007 Getting around From the airport to Madrid city You can go from Barajas airport to downtown Madrid, aprox. 15 kilometers, by taxi, subway or bus. TAXI The price can vary, but you should expect something in the order of €25-30. There are surcharges for rides from and to the airport (€5.00), as well as weekend and night service. Transport of normal-size luggage is free. We recommend that you ask for a receipt ( factura , in Spanish). SUBWAY (Metro) Line 8 connects the airport to Nuevos Ministerios. The stop Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3 is within walking distance of terminals T1, T2 and T3. The stop Aerpuerto T4 is inside terminal 4. Just follow the metro signs. The first train is at 6:05 a.m. and the last one at 1:30 a.m. Buy a single ticket for €2. Transfers within the metro zone A (central zone) are free. Once arrived to Nuevos Ministerios, to go to your hotel you can change to another metro line, or take a local train (Cercanías), or go outside to take a taxi. For the local trains you will need another ticket (1.20 €) as there are no combined tickets Metro/Cercanías. To transfer from metro to train follow the Cercanías sign . If you are staying in the Chamartín area you can either take a taxi (the remaining distance is about 2 km), or transfer to metro line 10 and get down at the Chamartín stop. Hotel Husa Chamartín is next to the station. Hotel Tryp Centro Norte is within walking distance. If your hotel is in the Atocha area you can continue by taxi (the remaining distance is about 3 km), or take a Cercanías train to the Atocha railway station, or transfer twice to reach metro line 1 . Hotel Husa Paseo del Arte and Hotel Agumar are reasonably close to the railway station. Hotel El Prado is farther away. The metro stop for Hotel Husa Paseo del Arte is Atocha (line 1). The metro stops for Hotel Agumar are Atocha Renfe or Menéndez Pelayo (both line 1). In any case you should find the exit nearest to your hotel. Have a look at the hotel location before you decide to walk there carrying luggage. If your hotel is near Plaza de Colón you can continue by taxi (the remaining distance is about 2 km), or take a Cercanías train to Recoletos on Paseo de la Castellana avenue. 1 Strings 07 Madrid, June 25-29, 2007 BUS You can take a bus to Avenida de América (end station) from terminal T4 (bus line 204) or from terminals T1, T2, and T3 (bus line 200). You can buy a single ticket (1 €) on the bus or use the ten-trip metrobus. Buses run aprox. every 15 minutes. The first bus is at 6:00 a.m., the last at 23:30. Avenida de América is a major bus terminal and also a metro station on lines 4, 6, 7 and 9. Taxis are easy to take from there. From terminal T4 you can take bus 827 directly to Universidad Autónoma (stop near Rectorado building). You can buy a single ticket (€1.55) on the bus. Frequency is aprox. every 20 minutes. The first bus is at 6:38, the last at 21:28. From Madrid city to the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid REGIONAL TRAINS (CERCANIAS RENFE) The best way to go from the city to the university is by regional train (Cercanías Renfe). The on-campus train station is called Cantoblanco Universidad . In daytime there should be at least one train every 10 minutes. You can take one of these three lines: • Line C-1 to Alcobendas/San Sebastián de los Reyes • Line C-7 to Colmenar Viejo • Line C-10 to Tres Cantos All of these stop in Atocha (main station in the center/south of Madrid), Recoletos (Plaza de Colón, Paseo de la Castellana), Nuevos Ministerios (Paseo de la Castellana) and Chamartín (main station in the North). The sequence of stations is: Atocha, Recoletos, Nuevos Ministerios, Chamartín, Fuencarral, and Cantoblanco Universidad where you should get down. Travel time between any two stations is about 5-6 minutes. Line C-7 also stops at Príncipe Pío, Pirámides, Méndez Álvaro and Delicias before Atocha. From hotels in Atocha or Chamartín area , walk to the nearby railway station. Atocha and Chamartín stations are the main train stations of Madrid and have several sections also for long-distance trains. You should look for the Cercanías station which is marked with the sign . 2 Strings 07 Madrid, June 25-29, 2007 From hotels near Plaza de Colón ,walk to the Recoletos Cercanías station on Paseo de Recoletos. From hotels near Nuevos Ministerios , walk to the Cercanías station on Paseo de La Castellana Avenue. From other hotels , take the subway (see map) to either Atocha Renfe (line 1), Nuevos Ministerios (lines 6, 8 and 10) or Chamartín (line 10) (see metro map). To transfer from metro to regional train follow the Cercanías sign . At the Cercanías station buy a single (in Spanish ida ) or round trip ticket ( ida y vuelta ) to Cantoblanco Universidad. Go to the trains in direction Chamartín, and board any train with final destination Tres Cantos (line C-10), Colmenar Viejo (line C-7) or Alcobendas-San Sebastián de los Reyes (line C-1). After getting off at the Cantoblanco Universidad train station, it is only small walk to the conference venue. BUS Bus line 714 travels from Plaza de Castilla (platform 13) to UAM (stop in front of rectorate building). You can buy a single ticket (1.30 €) on the bus. Frequency is approximately every 7 minutes. The first bus is at 7:40, the last at 21:55. Plaza de Castilla is a major bus terminal and a metro station (lines 1 and 9). How to reach the conference venue The Conference venue is the Auditorium of the Escuela Politécnica Superior (EPS) of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). The EPS is building number 6 on the map of the UAM campus. The train station is number 27. Number 14 is pavillion B where lunch will be served. The Rectorate building is number 1 on Einstein street. After you leave the train station, walk to your right to find ahead the Francisco Tomás y Valiente pedestrian street. As you can see on the map, the entrance to the auditorium is at the other end of this street.
