The GENESIS FELLOW AT THE 2018

The close relationship between the Genesis Foundation and the Young Vic dates back fifteen years. The generous support we have received has been crucial to establishing and maintaining our work with directors which is at the heart of everything we do.

The Genesis Fellow is a one-year role that enables its recipients to work closely with the Young Vic as they continue to develop their craft as a director. The Fellowship is aimed at an experienced director at an associate level or equivalent who has demonstrated a talent for and commitment to directing and has an ambition to become an artistic director.

THE FELLOWSHIP The director will have the opportunity to:  spend one year at the Young Vic as Genesis Fellow/Associate Director  work with the artistic director and colleagues  lead on some projects and meetings for the artistic director in certain circumstances  work with the associate artistic director on the Directors Program and the Genesis Future Directors Award  attend run-throughs and previews  see work on behalf of the Young Vic  read unsolicited plays and support the literary work of the Young Vic  support Taking Part department projects and productions by providing dramaturgical and artistic mentoring and lead on projects where appropriate  work with the development department on relevant fundraising initiatives  learn about how the Young Vic operates  support one-off events such as seminars, showings and galas  become part of the fabric and daily life of the Young Vic

There will not be an opportunity to direct show at the Young Vic during the tenure of the Fellowship. However, there will be a structured program of workshopping weeks and resources for the director to explore ideas for a production they want to initiate (without committing to programming it here at the Young Vic at this time).

The Genesis Fellow will work with to support and deliver his last season including work by , Bijan Sheibani, and Sam Gold. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to work with the incoming artistic director as they implement their new vision for the building. This will be a fascinating time for the Young Vic and it will provide a valuable learning experience for an aspiring artistic leader of the future.

We are looking for a director who:  is at an associate director level or equivalent point in their career as a director and have demonstrated exceptional talent  has a strong track record and has directed productions of outstanding merit and at least one for an established theatre company (building or touring company) in a medium space  demonstrated a commitment to originality and a desire to expand their understanding of theatre practice  has worked with experienced actors  has demonstrated an interest in and aptitude for becoming an artistic director  has a demonstrated interest in artist development and supporting new and emerging directors  is resident in the UK

You should be free to start in January 2018.

HOW TO APPLY The application will require a CV (no more than two pages) and a letter (one A4 page) detailing:  what the opportunity will mean in terms of your artistic development  your relevant experience and why you are interested in working at the Young Vic  names and contact details of two directors who have seen your work

FEES There is a salary of £30,000 and this is a fixed term one year contract from January 2018.

This appointment follows that of Gbolahan Obisesan in 2015, in 2013, in 2012 and Joe Hill-Gibbins in 2010. Joe’s production of The Changeling was one of the fastest selling studio shows in recent Young Vic history, and received a second run in the Main House in winter 2012. He made his National Theatre debut with Edward II and directed Measure for Measure at the Young Vic in the autumn of 2015. Following the Maria production of Electra, Carrie Cracknell’s acclaimed production of A Doll’s House, for which she received an Evening Standard Award nomination, had two sold-out runs at the Young Vic. She is Associate Director at the Royal Court, and has directed Alban Berg’s 20th-century masterpiece Wozzeck at the ENO. Carrie Cracknell collaborated with Lucy Guerin to create a new version of Shakespeare’s Macbeth at the Young Vic in 2015. Natalie Abrahami directed with Juliet Stephenson in 2014and Ah, Wilderness! Eugene O’Neill’s warm portrait of a Connecticut childhood in spring 2015. Gbolahan directed a production of Charlene James’ award-winning Cuttin’ It, which tackled the urgent issue of FGM in Britain. This acclaimed production not only performed at the Young Vic but toured to Sheffield, Birmingham and Latitude Festival. Gbolahan’s production was nominated for a 2017 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre.

GENESIS FOUNDATION

The Genesis Foundation has supported the Young Vic the Young Vic’s director’s program since its inception. The Genesis Foundation is pleased to fund the Genesis Fellow and Genesis Fellow Production Fund, the Genesis Future Directors Awards and the Genesis Directors Network at the Young Vic.

Established by John Studzinski in 2001, the Genesis Foundation works in partnership with the leaders of prestigious UK arts organisations such as LAMDA, the National Theatre, Royal Court, The Sixteen and the Young Vic. Its largest funding commitment is to programmes that support directors, playwrights, actors and musicians in the early stages of their professional lives.

The theme of art and faith increasingly characterises aspects of the Foundation’s work with choral commissions including James MacMillan’s Stabat mater.
