WHITEHALL LECTURES The Cambridge University Land Society (CULS) through its Cambridge Whitehall Group forum, is launching this important series of lectures in recognition of the part its members play in contributing to public policy issues. Society members are mainly alumni of the Department of Land Economy, but also from many other academic disciplines in the University of Cambridge. Many play important, often distinguished, roles in many aspects of public policy that are covered by the work of the Department. The Cambridge Whitehall Group is a member of CULS and is a high level influential policy discussion group of well-connected Cambridge alumni, who are mainly members of CULS. In addition to its member events it also runs this distinguished series of policy lectures of which this lecture by Professor Sir Malcolm Grant is the inaugural one. The lectures will discuss major aspects of public policy that in one way or another touch on the disciplines of policy, economics and the application of land use. -

The broader aim is to empower citizens, and inform professionals, researchers, institutions and policy- makers, with a view to positively shaping change. # 2 London: Regeneration Realities The term ‘regeneration’ has recently been subjected to much criticism as a pervasive metaphor applied to varied and often problematic processes of urban change. Concerns have focused on the way the concept is used as shorthand in sidestepping important questions related to, for example, gentrification and property development. Indeed, it is an area where policy and practice have been disconnected from a rigorous base in research and evidence. With many community groups affected by regeneration evidently feeling disenfranchised, there is a strong impetus to propose more rigorous approaches to researching and doing regeneration. The Greater London Authority has also recently opened a call for the public to comment on what regeneration is, and feedback on what its priorities should be. -

UCL EAR INSTITUTE SENIOR or PRINCIPAL CLINICAL RESEARCH FELLOW (CL8 or 9) 0.8 FTE We have an exciting opportunity for an ENT trainee or ENT surgeon to play a key role in a ground breaking first in human trial of a novel therapy to treat hearing loss. The REGAIN project (REgeneration of inner hair cells with GAmma secretase INhibitors) is funded by the prestigious EU Horizon 2020 programme and aims to deliver a phase I/II study to test the safety and efficacy of a gamma secretase inhibitor in adults with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss. This innovative project is led by Prof Anne Schilder and Prof Shakeel Saeed, and will be conducted at the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital, in collaboration with the UCL Ear Institute and partner sites across Europe. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated senior ENT trainee, or a recently qualified ENT surgeon, to provide essential clinical support to the trial. She/he will be a key figure in the delivery of the trial, supported by research nurses and audiologists as part of the REGAIN team. In parallel to trial delivery, the post holder will be encouraged and supported to develop their own hearing research related to the trial, tailored to background and expertise. The postholder will therefore have a keen interest in translational research and developing a clinical academic career in the field of ENT, hearing and balance. She/he will be flexible, pro-active and able to work under own initiative. The appointment is either to the Senior Clinical Research Fellow or the Principal Clinical Research Fellow grade. -

1 Philosophy at University College London: Part 1: From Jeremy Bentham to the Second World War Talk to Academic Staff Common Room Society, April 2006 Jonathan Wolff I’m quite often asked to give talks but I’m rarely asked to talk about the philosophy department. In fact I can only remember being asked to do this once before: to College Council very soon after Malcolm Grant was appointed as Provost. On that occasion I decided to tell a cautionary tale: painting a picture of the brilliance of the department in the late 1970s – second in the country only to the very much larger department at Oxford; how it was all ruined in the early 1980s by a wave of cost- cutting measures in which all the then internationally known members of the department left; and how it has taken twenty-five years to come close to recovery. This seemed to go down well on the day, but I can’t say that I won the longer term argument about the imprudence of cost-cutting. For this talk I was, at first, at a bit of a loss to know what to talk about. One possibility would be to try to describe the research that currently takes place in the department. But this idea didn’t appeal. Philosophers tend to work on their own, and so we don’t have research groups, as such, or collective projects. We have 15 members of the department, each engaged on their own research. Also, every time I try to summarize their work my colleagues tell me that I have misunderstood it. -

UCL SCHOOL OF LIFE AND MEDICAL SCIENCES UCL FACUTY OF POULATION HEALTH SCIENCES INSTITUTE OF CHILD HEALTH CLINICAL LECTURER IN PAEDIATRICS JOB DESCRIPTION INTRODUCTION The UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH) The mission of the UCL Institute of Child Health is to improve the health and well-being of children, and the adults they will become, through world-class research, education and public engagement. This strategy has been informed by the insights gained from visits to six other internationally excellent children’s academic medical centres and by detailed discussions internally and with our external partners, including GODH, GOSH Children’s Charity, the wider UCL community, UCL Partners and funding bodies. The UCL Institute of Child Health, together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, forms the largest concentration of children’s health research outside North America. In 2013 ICH developed a new academic strategy which focuses on five scientific programmes: • Genetics and Genomic Medicine • Population, Policy and Practice • Developmental Biology and Cancer • Developmental Neurosciences • Infection, Immunity and Inflammation Four key principles underpin these programmes and the academic strategy: Interdisciplinarity. ICH will facilitate the best scientists, from all relevant academic and clinical disciplines, to work together to address fundamental questions to improve the health of children. Accelerating translation. ICH will support the rapid translation of findings from basic discoveries relevant to understanding of health and disease, to clinical studies, more directly aimed at improving the clinical care of children. We will also support “reverse translation” from observations in clinical and population studies to basic studies which address mechanisms of health and disease.
