Afler a brief examination of poetry, prose, art and music, we discuss and analyse the word heart in its universal applicability within different religions, eras, cultures and creeds. Our particular focus is then centred in Sacred Scripture where we find the most comprehensive understanding of the word heart. Tracing the depth and richness of its meaning throughout the Scripture texts, we are faced with the human paradox of good and evil, both of which proceed from the mysterious realm of the heart where freedom and grace engage us in ways that are at times beyond our comprehension. Examining the place of the desert in the process of forming the heart - which we understand to be the vital, inner core of a person - we highlight the struggle involved in this process, suggesting as the desert Fathers have before us, that the heart itself is at times a battlefield.

    PUBLIC RECORDS ACT 1958 (c. 51)i, ii An Act to make new provision with respect to public records and the Public Record Office, and for connected purposes. [23rd July 1958] General responsibility of the Lord Chancellor for public records. 1. - (1) The direction of the Public Record Office shall be transferred from the Master of the Rolls to the Lord Chancellor, and the Lord Chancellor shall be generally responsible for the execution of this Act and shall supervise the care and preservation of public records. (2) There shall be an Advisory Council on Public Records to advise the Lord Chancellor on matters concerning public records in general and, in particular, on those aspects of the work of the Public Record Office which affect members of the public who make use of the facilities provided by the Public Record Office. The Master of the Rolls shall be chairman of the said Council and the remaining members of the Council shall be appointed by the Lord Chancellor on such terms as he may specify. [(2A) The matters on which the Advisory Council on Public Records may advise the Lord Chancellor include matters relating to the application of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to information contained in public records which are historical records within the meaning of Part VI of that Act.iii] (3) The Lord Chancellor shall in every year lay before both Houses of Parliament a report on the work of the Public Record Office, which shall include any report made to him by the Advisory Council on Public Records.

    THE PUBLIC RECORD OFFICE. Janet D. Hine. (This paper was delivered by Miss Hine · at the last Association Conference.) I am very happy to talk to you tonight about the Publio Record Office in London. Introduction. There is no doubt that we are greatly indebted to this institution, for its example and for the way it has preserved quantities of the. source material of Australian histor,y. But in any case I feel a personal sense of gratitude to it because, I must guiltily admit, I. have spent some of the pleasantest and strangest hours of my life there. All this in spite of being quite literally allergic to it, or at least to its dust. Perhaps that added to the strangeness. The Joint Copying Project. From 1954 to 1957 I was in London, seconded to the office of the Agent General for New South Wales, to do work for the various departments of the Public Library of New South Wales. As I shall mention again later, I had several enquiries to make of the Public Record Office on behalf of the Archives Department, and I also used it to settle some comparatively small and self-contained queries sent from home and others rising out of the interests of the Agent General 1 s office. But by far the longest and most consistent · association I had with it was in connexion with the Joint Copying Project. This, as the present audience will doubtless know, is an · arrangement whereby the Commonwealth National Library and the Mitchell Library, in co-operation with the other State libraries of Australia, are having original overseas material of Australian and Pacific interest searched and copied for the use of students in this country.

    UTTLESFORD DISTRICT COUNCIL AUDLEY END AUDLEY END TL 525383 GRADE I A house of C17 origins beside a mid C19 parterre garden, with pleasure grounds by Richard Woods, surrounded by a C18 park conceived and partly laid out by Lancelot Brown between 1762 and 1767. HISTORIC DEVELOPMENT Audley End was built between c. 1605 and 1614, on the site of the abbey of Walden, for Thomas Howard, first earl of Suffolk. His surveyor was Bernard Jannssen and in 1614 Suffolk began to lay out extensive formal gardens. Following conviction for embezzlement however he suffered great financial trouble and his property declined. Suffolk died in 1626, leaving his son Theophilus to bear the twin burdens of his debts and enormous maintenance costs. When James the third earl inherited in 1640 the situation had not improved and after the Restoration the house and some parkland were sold to Charles II in 1668. Extensive works to the house were undertaken by Christopher Wren (1632-1723) but successive monarchs showed little interest in the property which in 1701 was returned to the Howards and settled on Henry, earl of Bindon who assumed the title of sixth earl of Suffolk in 1708. The sixth earl commissioned Sir John Vanbrugh (1664-1726) to make improvements which resulted in demolition of part of the house, after which the property passed to Charles William Howard, seventh earl who died in 1722 at the age of twenty nine. The estate was left to his younger uncle, Charles Howard, while the title passed to his elder uncle, Edward. When Edward died, Charles became the ninth earl and in 1725 he commissioned a plan for a great formal garden by the French architect Dubois.

    Howard J. Garber Letter Collection This collection was the gift of Howard J. Garber to Case Western Reserve University from 1979 to 1993. Dr. Howard Garber, who donated the materials in the Howard J. Garber Manuscript Collection, is a former Clevelander and alumnus of Case Western Reserve University. Between 1979 and 1993, Dr. Garber donated over 2,000 autograph letters, documents and books to the Department of Special Collections. Dr. Garber's interest in history, particularly British royalty led to his affinity for collecting manuscripts. The collection focuses primarily on political, historical and literary figures in Great Britain and includes signatures of all the Prime Ministers and First Lords of the Treasury. Many interesting items can be found in the collection, including letters from Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning Thomas Hardy, Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, King George III, and Virginia Woolf.
