6-13 Secrets of the Reuge Manufacture 14-53 1865 54-65 Lounge 66-77 Studio 78-89 Artists 90-111 Collection 112-127 Melodies 4 5 The sources of mechanical music 1796. Antoine Favre. The birth of mechanical music originates from this date. Trained by the master watchmakers of Geneva, the music-makers raised Sainte-Croix to the rank of the world’s music box capital. The golden aged lasted several decades; then, the attraction for large pieces gradually faded. Yet, the heritage is safe. Blaise Bontems was guided by humanity’s continuing admiration for birds. In 1848, he opened a shop in Paris selling singing birds, which he placed in finely wrought cages and in boxes. Because it is committed to perpetuating this art, Reuge inherited the activities of the Bontems firm in 1960. Since then, the tradition lives on. Determination, tradition and innovation: these values presided over the renewal of prestigious mechanical music. At the dawn of the new millennium, the magic was reborn and the expertise of music-makers has been revived – aesthetics re-invented. A prestigious collection has been born out of the singular creativity of Reuge. 7 Reuge, a prestigious heritage looking to the future A musical pocket watch was the timepiece created by Charles Reuge which formed the starting point for the Reuge family’s vocation in mechanical music. In 1865, he started manufacturing these watches in Sainte-Croix. The second generation of the Reuge family established the factory in 1929 and music boxes are still assembled within its walls. Guido Reuge was the soul of the business.
