Lamps replaced. - A spectacular collector's item and exhibition piece! - Exactly this machine was " leading actor " in Japanese movie " The Code " , which was elected in 2009 as one of the ten best movies in Japan (see movie photographs). - Serien-Nr. A9597. - Mit 3 Original-Walzen, bezeichnet: A-3002 (V), A-1505 (II) und A-9132 (IV). - Literatur: Martin, 1949, S. 370. - Und: " Spiegel " , Nr. 47/1978, S. 121 u.a. (3/3) starting: 10,000 euros 15000 25000 € 15 2 Original " Enigma " Rotors, c. 1938 Rotor no.: A-1478 and A-3554. - Extremely hard to find extra rotors, ideal for completion! 2 Original- " Enigma " -Walzen,

6-13 Secrets of the Reuge Manufacture 14-53 1865 54-65 Lounge 66-77 Studio 78-89 Artists 90-111 Collection 112-127 Melodies 4 5 The sources of mechanical music 1796. Antoine Favre. The birth of mechanical music originates from this date. Trained by the master watchmakers of Geneva, the music-makers raised Sainte-Croix to the rank of the world’s music box capital. The golden aged lasted several decades; then, the attraction for large pieces gradually faded. Yet, the heritage is safe. Blaise Bontems was guided by humanity’s continuing admiration for birds. In 1848, he opened a shop in Paris selling singing birds, which he placed in finely wrought cages and in boxes. Because it is committed to perpetuating this art, Reuge inherited the activities of the Bontems firm in 1960. Since then, the tradition lives on. Determination, tradition and innovation: these values presided over the renewal of prestigious mechanical music. At the dawn of the new millennium, the magic was reborn and the expertise of music-makers has been revived – aesthetics re-invented. A prestigious collection has been born out of the singular creativity of Reuge. 7 Reuge, a prestigious heritage looking to the future A musical pocket watch was the timepiece created by Charles Reuge which formed the starting point for the Reuge family’s vocation in mechanical music. In 1865, he started manufacturing these watches in Sainte-Croix. The second generation of the Reuge family established the factory in 1929 and music boxes are still assembled within its walls. Guido Reuge was the soul of the business.

McAllister Senior Supervisor Associate Professor Dara Culhane Supervisor Professor Department of Sociology and Anthropology Zoë Druick Supervisor Professor Christine Kim Internal Examiner Associate Professor Department of English Grace Cho External Examiner Associate Professor Department of Sociology and Anthropology College of Staten Island The City University of New York Date Defended/Approved: October 3, 2016 ii Ethics Statement iii Abstract In January 2005, a raid organized by the Prefectural Police in Yokohama, Japan, evicted independent sex trade businesses run by migrant women, predominantly from other regions of Asia in the marginalized district of Koganecho. The police and a group of local residents promoted the eradication of baishun [prostitution], using slogans about making the neighbourhood “safe” and “secure” and free of illegal foreigners and HIV carriers. Based on the ethnographic fieldwork I conducted over nine months, this dissertation explores question, what happens after transnational migrant sex workers are displaced from the city? in two ways. Organized into two parts, this dissertation first aims to critique the processes through which the lives of displaced migrants get further erased in the “memoryscapes” (Yoneyama 1999, Riano-Alcala 2006, McAllister 2010, 2011) of the city at both material and discursive levels.
