The police and a group of local residents promoted the eradication of baishun [prostitution], using slogans about making the neighbourhood “safe” and “secure” and free of illegal foreigners and HIV carriers. Based on the ethnographic fieldwork I conducted over nine months, this dissertation explores question, what happens after transnational migrant sex workers are displaced from the city? in two ways. Organized into two parts, this dissertation first aims to critique the processes through which the lives of displaced migrants get further erased in the “memoryscapes” (Yoneyama 1999, Riano-Alcala 2006, McAllister 2010, 2011) of the city at both material and discursive levels. I analyze the built environment, official historical discourses in museum exhibitions and municipal policies, and local grassroots cultural productions in the forms of photography, films and film festivals. After analyzing the dominant memoryscapes of Yokohama, my dissertation brings to light the site of displacement where I encountered people of two water trade communities, one primarily Japanese and the other primarily Thai that emerged or survived in the aftermath of the police raid. Here I highlight the processes where I was “entangled” (Ingold 2008) with the local social relations and “confronted” by people in the field (Fabian 2001, p.25), having my research rejected or questioned in unexpected ways. Those moments forced me to be reflexive and turned my gaze from memories and experiences of others to my own as a site of critical scrutiny and ethnographic practice. In Part II, I attempt to share an embodied sense of what happens after displacement at an everyday interaction level, which I tentatively call an alternative memoryscape of the city. While the two parts respond to my research question differently, they share a common epistemological premise that the knowledge I present in my dissertation emerged through my “body as a site of knowing” (Pink 2015), as I engaged with the social, sensory, imaginary and material place of my research. iv Keywords: Displacement; transnational migration; memory; sensory ethnography; sex work; Yokohama v Dedication To Mia. vi Acknowledgements First and foremost, I acknowledge all the migrant women, who inhabited and then were displaced from Koganecho, a former brothel district in Yokohama, in which I carried out my research. My dissertation reflects on the displacement of those women, and, I recognize, it was the fundamental condition that enabled my research. Kintetsu Enterprises Company of America was founded in San Francisco in 1961 by Kintetsu Group Holdings of Osaka, Japan. The company sought to bridge Japanese and American cultures. They began in San Francisco, which had been Osaka’s Sister City since 1957. At the time, Japantown had recently undergone redevelopment so Kintetsu brought new life to Japantown by encouraging the proliferation of Japanese businesses in the area. They opened the Kyoto Inn in 1975 and, realizing that guests needed a place to enjoy Japanese food, opened what was then called Café Mums just four years later.

    A Past Re-imagined for the Geisha: Saviour of the 1950’s Japanese Sex Industry Caroline Norma Asia Institute This article looks at public discussion surrounding the enactment of Japan’s Prostitution Prevention Law in 1956. It homes in on the opinion of com- mentators that the exclusion of the geisha system from the law’s provisions allowed the Japanese sex industry to flourish even after 1956. The paper asks why the geisha system was left out of the law, and why this exclu- sion was a boon for the Japanese sex industry. It argues that the geisha system established a ‘respectable’ standard for prostitution in Japan, which shielded the sex industry from legal intervention in the postwar period. It concludes that the geisha system has normalised and lent respectability to the activities of the sex industry in Japanese society to the detriment of its women and girls. 37 INTRODUCTION in the 1950s. Preface As widely known, the term ‘prostitution’ is regarded as a negative taboo word in Japan. Probably because of this, the word ‘Fuzoku(1)’, which is the euphemism of prostitution, has been recently commonly used to refer to the sex industry itself, brothels and sex workers. This paper intends to clarify the status quo of sex workers, and eventually reveal the taboo through comparative studies on the cases of Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Japan is opposed to Australia and New Zealand not only geographically but also in terms of re- sponses for prostitution including the welfare/health policies. Therefore, this paper mentions firstly the situations and problems sex workers in those three countries are faced with, in the process of which it will be hopefully clear at last why I conclude “The way to unionisation of sex workers” as a solution. II. Situation in Japan In Japan, the occupations and places related to prostitution began to be generally called ‘Fuzoku’ in the end of twentieth century and, the term has been commonly used since the beginning of twenty-first century. And, the ‘Fuzoku’consists mainly of escort agencies widely known in Western countries and brothels. The escort agencies in Japan have almost the same management system as those in Western countries; women (mostly) registered by the agencies are dispatched to hotels upon request via phone call or the like, while the system of brothels is rather complicated.

Nowadays the ability to show the world our identity as Japanese people including our culture and tradition, especially the ability to communicate with the rest of the world, is needed more than ever. Throughout history, Kyoto has been at the center of Japanese culture and history. Kyoto is therefore a good starting point for communicating with the world about Japanese culture and history. In this textbook, the history, tradition, and culture of each region in Kyoto Prefecture are introduced in English so that you, as high school students, can be proud to tell people from abroad about your hometown and Kyoto in English. The contents of chapter Ⅰto Ⅲ in this textbook are based on a Japanese textbook which was written for new teachers working in Kyoto Prefecture. Some parts have been erased and changed, and in other parts, new information was added so that high school students can understand better. You might find some difficult words in the textbook, however, the sentence structures are rather simple and readers with a basic knowledge of grammar can read on with a dictionary at hand. Furthermore, as the Japanese explanations are available on the right page, you can utilize them as a reference if the English is too difficult to understand. Besides, this textbook would be useful not only for students but also for people from abroad who don't know much about Kyoto Prefecture.

    Love Motels: Oriental Phenomenon or emergent sector? Abstract Purpose This study explores the ‘Love Motel’ concept by examining the changing attitude of consumers in Taiwan. This will increase knowledge of the sector and define love motels. Design/methodology/approach The literature review charts the development of Taiwanese love motels from a duel origin; American Motels and Japanese ‘Love Hotels.’ This is followed by an empirical qualitative study consisting of a twostage collection strategy: focus groups of hospitality and tourism professionals to gather a wide range of opinions on the subject area followed by semi structured interviews with consumers. Findings The findings split into three interrelated areas: growth of Taiwanese love motels due to more liberal attitudes towards sexual practice; a change in the public perception of motels due to increased standards and an increased satisfaction with the personal consumption experience; these hotels are designed for couples. Research limitations/implications The empirical element of this study is an exploration of consumer experience in Taiwanese love hotels. Due to the sensitive nature of some of the data that was gathered a qualitative approach has been adopted. Practical Implications The sexual associations with this product appear almost coincidental. If the love motel product is considered in its purest form it is simply a hotel product that provides complete anonymity for its guests. Therefore, despite its application in South East Asia, this hospitality concept has potential to be applied in a variety of guises. Originality/value The phenomenon of ‘Love Hotels’ is absent from hospitality management literature; this paper begins to fill that gap by beginning a discussion on this possibly controversial sector.
