Some 2,000 research fellows, grad uate students, and professionals in business and government each year work with the Center's international staff in cooperative study, training, and research. They examine major issues related to population, resources and development, the environment, culture, and communication in Asia, the Pacific, and the United States. The Center was established in 1960 by the United States Congress, which provides principal funding. The police and a group of local residents promoted the eradication of baishun [prostitution], using slogans about making the neighbourhood “safe” and “secure” and free of illegal foreigners and HIV carriers. Based on the ethnographic fieldwork I conducted over nine months, this dissertation explores question, what happens after transnational migrant sex workers are displaced from the city? in two ways. Organized into two parts, this dissertation first aims to critique the processes through which the lives of displaced migrants get further erased in the “memoryscapes” (Yoneyama 1999, Riano-Alcala 2006, McAllister 2010, 2011) of the city at both material and discursive levels. -
Time and Memory in the Moving Image: Yubari on Film
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE Time and Memory in the Moving Image: Yubari on Film Aya OGAWARA Introduction In August 2010, a film workshop was held in Yubari, a ‘remote’ city located at a corner of Japan’s most northern region Hokkaido. The theme of the workshop, which I myself attended, was ‘Image and Memory’1. In order to examine problems concerning this theme, Yubari was chosen, because its appearance changed rapidly after its 2007 bankruptcy: we wished to record the city’s current appearance before it might undergo any further change. The workshop consisted of three stages: recording the current appearance of Yubari, editing the recorded film together with clips from old promotional films, and showing the edited work to the citizens of Yubari. Through this, we aimed to elicit their memories. Significantly, the film produced in our workshop unconsciously represented preconceived notions of what Yubari is and used to be, which I will discuss later.2 In this paper, I will investigate how the moving image can affect memories. I will firstly analyze the representation of Yubari in the commercially successful Japanese film Shiawase no kiiroi hankachi, or The Yellow Handkerchief, directed by Yoji Yamada in 1977. I will then briefly consider how our workshop film shows similar characteristics to Yamada’s film, and discuss how an established narrative influences our memories. Finally, I will seek the possibility of the moving image as a creative memory, referring to Damian Sutton’s book Photography, Cinema, Memory : The Crystal Image of Time. -

Japan Society Announces Full Lineup for Online Edition of the 14th Annual JAPAN CUTS: Festival of New Japanese Film North America’s largest festival of contemporary Japanese cinema presents a robust slate of 42 films streaming online throughout the U.S., introduces inaugural Next Generation competitive festival section with Obayashi Prize, and offers dual CUT ABOVE Awards to actors Koichi Sato and Ken Watanabe New York, NY (June 24, 2020) – Japan Society announces the full lineup for the 14th annual JAPAN CUTS: Festival of New Japanese Film, the largest festival of its kind in North America, set for July 17-30 as an entirely online experience. Continuing its annual mission to showcase the best and most exciting films coming out of Japan today, the summer festival will expand its reach beyond New York to introduce 30 features and 12 short films to audiences across the U.S. As previously announced, festival organizers have partnered with Festival Scope and Shift72 to reformat JAPAN CUTS as a dynamic online streaming platform. Utilizing a VOD model, films will be made available to rent with a limited number of virtual tickets per title and access largely restricted to the U.S. The exclusive selection of film streaming options will be supplemented with live and pre-recorded virtual Q&As, discussion panels, and video introductions from filmmakers to maintain the festival’s sense of community and dedication to intercultural communication during the COVID-19 crisis, creating a meaningful online experience as we look forward to returning to physical cinemas together again in the future. -

Center for Japanese Studies Events - 2008 Disturbing Difference: Translation, Naturalization, and the Global Publication of Japanese Fiction Stephen Snyder, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Japanese Studies, Middelbury College January 25, 2008 Center for Japanese Studies This paper examines the intersection of theoretical, aesthetic and commercial interests in processes affecting the translation of contemporary Japanese literature. Translation is considered as a multi-stage practice influenced by various agents, involving issues of text selection, the translator's theoretical stance and working strategies, editing principles, and marketing tactics. An examination of naturalizing translation strategies designed to erase cultural difference and radical, often transformative, editing practices and marketing strategies highlight commodification processes in American and European markets. Umberto Eco has argued that translation is best viewed as an act of negotiation between cultural spheres, but Lawrence Venuti reminds us that it is also a cultural practice that is "deeply implicated in relations of domination and dependence, equally capable of maintaining and disrupting them." The translation of contemporary Japanese fiction plays a central role in the negotiation of the unequal cultural relationship between Japan and the West. A number of pavilions, including the Japanese Pavilion, have been asked to add a dish to the Anniversary Menu this year. We'll be serving “somen” (cold noodles in broth) along with our usual tasty items.
