History of City Planning in the City of Yokohama
History of City Planning in the City of Yokohama City Planning Division, Planning Department, Housing & Architecture Bureau, City of Yokohama 1. Overview of the City of Yokohama (1) Location/geographical features Yokohama is located in eastern Kanagawa Prefecture at 139° 27’ 53” to 139° 43’ 31” East longitude and 35° 18’ 45” to 35° 35’ 34” North latitude. It faces Tokyo Bay to the east and the cities of Yamato, Fujisawa, and Machida (Tokyo) to the west. The city of Kawasaki lies to the north, and the cities of Kamakura, Zushi, and Yokosuka are to the south. Yokohama encompasses the largest area of all municipalities in the prefecture and is the prefectural capital. There are also rolling hills running north-south in the city’s center. In the north is the southernmost end of Tama Hills, and in the south is the northernmost end of Miura Hills that extends to the Miura Peninsula. A flat tableland stretches east-west in the hills, while narrow terraces are partially formed along the rivers running through the tableland and hills. Furthermore, valley plains are found in the river areas and coastal lowland on the coastal areas. Reclaimed land has been constructed along the coast so that the shoreline is almost entirely modified into manmade topography. (2) Municipal area/population trends The municipality was formed in 1889 and established the City of Yokohama. Thereafter, the municipal area was expanded, a ward system enforced, and new wards created, resulting in the current 18 wards (administrative divisions) and an area of 435.43km2. Although the population considerably declined after WWII, it increased by nearly 100,000 each year during the period of high economic growth. -

Excavating Memories of Migrant Sex Workers and Becoming Entangled with the Water Trade in Yokohama
After Displacement: Excavating Memories of Migrant Sex Workers and Becoming Entangled with the Water Trade in Yokohama by Ayaka Yoshimizu M.A. (Communication), Simon Fraser University, 2008 B.A. (Political Science), Keio University, 2004 Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Communication Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology © Ayaka Yoshimizu 2016 SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY Fall 2016 Approval Name: Ayaka Yoshimizu Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Title: After Displacement: Excavating Memories of Migrant Sex Workers and Becoming Entangled with the Water Trade in Yokohama Examining Committee: Chair: Alison Beale Professor Kirsten E. McAllister Senior Supervisor Associate Professor Dara Culhane Supervisor Professor Department of Sociology and Anthropology Zoë Druick Supervisor Professor Christine Kim Internal Examiner Associate Professor Department of English Grace Cho External Examiner Associate Professor Department of Sociology and Anthropology College of Staten Island The City University of New York Date Defended/Approved: October 3, 2016 ii Ethics Statement iii Abstract In January 2005, a raid organized by the Prefectural Police in Yokohama, Japan, evicted independent sex trade businesses run by migrant women, predominantly from other regions of Asia in the marginalized district of Koganecho. The police and a group of local residents promoted the eradication of baishun [prostitution], using slogans about making the neighbourhood “safe” and “secure” and free of illegal foreigners and HIV carriers. Based on the ethnographic fieldwork I conducted over nine months, this dissertation explores question, what happens after transnational migrant sex workers are displaced from the city? in two ways. Organized into two parts, this dissertation first aims to critique the processes through which the lives of displaced migrants get further erased in the “memoryscapes” (Yoneyama 1999, Riano-Alcala 2006, McAllister 2010, 2011) of the city at both material and discursive levels. -
Follow the Rules! Ride Bicycles Properly!
February 1 - March 31, 2009 http://www.city.yokohama.jp/me/naka/e/ No. 103 2009 YOKOHAMA 150th Anniversary of the Opening of the Port of Yokohama Follow the Rules! Ride BicyclesBicycles Properly! Do you use a bicycle daily? Recently, more people are riding bicycles instead of driving cars because of the costs of car usage and gasoline, out of concern over global warming, and/or for exercise to maintain their health. While bicycles are ridden easily and casually, a major new issue is the deterioration of the manners of riders – reckless and dangerous riding on sidewalks. In Kanagawa Prefecture, Naka Ward is among places notorious for the high frequency of bicycle accidents. As a result, in 2007, Naka Ward was described as a “zone” of bicycle accidents. Traffic manners need special attention. No-parking areas for bicycles and other rules are introduced here. Riders, observe traffic rules and ride safely! Have you seen these? Have you done them yourself? • Inconsiderate parking is not only dangerous, but spoils the town landscape - Bicycles parked on sidewalks interfere with pedestrians (particularly mothers pushing baby carriages). - Parking on braille blocks is dangerous for the visually impaired (braille blocks guide them as they move). - Leaving a bicycle for a long time could result in your being accused of illegal dumping. Bicycle thefts are increasing. Stolen bicycles are then often left on the streets. • To prevent thefts: - Double lock bicycles. - At the time of purchase, be sure to register the bicycle. Bicycle no-parking areas expanded - Park properly in designated areas. Last autumn, bicycle no-parking areas around Sakuragicho Station, Hinodecho Station and the Motomachi-Chukagai Station were expanded.
