  • Vulnerability Across a Life Course: an Empirical Stildy: Women and Criminality in Botswana Prisons
The African e-Journals Project has digitized full text of articles of eleven social science and humanities journals. This item is from the digital archive maintained by Michigan State University Library. Find more at: http://digital.lib.msu.edu/projects/africanjournals/ Available through a partnership with Scroll down to read the article. Modie-MorokalVULNERABILlTY, WOMEN AND CRIMINALITY IN BOTSWANA Vulnerability across a life course: an empirical stildy: women and criminality in Botswana prisons l'rRELo MODIE-MOROKA 1 ABS'IRACf The number of women in prison in Botswana has grown over the past ten years. This is due, in large part, to rising numbers of women offenders admitted to prison for property and drug-related offences. The purpose of the study presented here was to assess the relation- ship between their life events and the subsequent offending of incarcerated women. Data were collected through in-depth inter- views with 80 women inmates at six prisons in Botswana in J 997. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, respondents were asked about their backgrounds, criminal histo- ries and relationships with significant others, together with the reasons for their current offending. Results show that women "in prison are predominately poor, young and uneducated, who report high levels of victimization, substance abuse, familial disruption and high-risk behaviour and suffer from a host of physical and mental disorders. High rates of child and ad.ult abuse, neglect and abafU10nment were also reported. These histories were strong predictors of poor physical and mental health. Thefindings of this study force us to examine the interplay of the cultural, ideological and structuralfactors affecting womens lives from a gender, class and relational analysis.

  • Brief Explanation of the Kanye 1:250,000 Geological Map
Brief explanation of the Kanye 1:250,000 geological map There is an E-W bedrock exposure-belt across the southern part of the Sheet where conventional geological mapping by the Botswana Geological Survey Department has been published as two geological maps. These are the 1:125,000 geological map of the Jwaneng Area (Sheet 2424D; Tombale, 1986; Cullen, 1958), and the 1:25,000 geological map of the Molopo Farms Project Area that includes the geology of Sheet 2424C (Gould & Rathbone, 1988). The geology of these southern areas shown on the present map is relatively detailed as it incorporates the results of the conventional mapping by the Botswana Geological Survey Department with an interpretation of the high-resolution airborne magnetic data. By contrast, the geology of the northern half of the sheet is only shown at Group level. However, major faults (including the Dikgomodikae Lineament) and dykes are shown as these are clearly defined by the magnetic data. The logs of about 209 water boreholes, as well as the logs of about 50 exploration boreholes (mainly into the Molopo Farms Complex or for kimberlites) were used in compiling the geology map. The water boreholes include a tightly spaced cluster in the Jwaneng Wellfield in 2424B1. Otherwise most water boreholes are concentrated in the southern, populated part of the Sheet. Lobatse Group including the Kanye Felsite The oldest rocks shown on the map are siliceous lavas, including feldspar-quartz porphyries, quartz porphyries and flow-banded rhyolites of the Lobatse Group that are exposed in the Jwaneng area (Tombale, 1986). Here they underlie Transvaal Supergroup strata and are intruded by the Gaborone Granite.

In this stats brief, the reference point of the population projections was the 2011 Population and Housing Census, in which the total population by age and sex is available. Population projections give a picture of what the future size and structure of the population by sex and age might look like. It is based on knowledge of the past trends, and, for the future, on assumptions made for three components of population change being fertility, mortality and migration. The projections are derived from mathematical formulas that use current populations and rates of growth to estimate future populations. The population projections presented is for Cities, Towns and Villages excluding associated localities for the year 2020. Generally, population projections are more accurate for large populations than for small populations and are more accurate for the near future than the distant future.
