Up to the present the journal has not been able to include some of the material received because of considerations of length. The periodical, Archivum Lithuanicum has grown in size and the third volume was thicker than its editors intended. Conse- quently the editors decided to found a new supplementary series of the journal for the publication of larger articles, materials which would be beyond the scope of a single regular article. By now, the time of publication of the fourth volume of Archivum Lithuanicum, three book-length supplements in the series Bibliotheca Archivi Lithuanici have been published: (1) Giedrius Subaèius, Kalikstas Kasakauskis: Lietuviø bendrinës kalbos konjunktûra (Kalikstas Kasakauskis: Juncture of Standard Lithuanian), Vilnius: Lietuviø kalbos instituto leidykla, 2001; (2) Vaidotas Rimða, Jano Maleckio ir Jano Sekluciano polemika dël katekizmo kanoninio vertimo (Polemic of Jan Malecki and Jan Seklucian concerning the Translation of Canonical Cath- echism), Vilnius: Lietuviø kalbos instituto leidykla, 2001; (3) X.D.K.P.S. lietuviø kalbos gramatika. XIX amþiaus pradþia (Lithuanian Grammar by X.D.K.P.S. The Begin- ning of the Nineteenth Century), ed. Giedrius Subaèius, Vilnius: Mokslo ir enciklopedijø leidybos institutas, 2002. Another important event of 2002 is that the minister of education and science, Algirdas Monkevièius, signed directive No 536 (April 8, 2002) which calls for the inclusion of Archivum Lithuanicum in the official list of scholarly journals accepted for scholarly degrees in the Republic of Lithuania. The third important event is the establishment of the Archivum Lithuanicum scholarship by Robin Newmann from Chicago. The scholarship is awarded to a graduate student, either a masters or a doctoral student engaged in research on the external history of some language. The first recipient of the Archivum Lithuanicum scholarship was Vilnius University doctoral student Vilma Zubaitienë, who is doing research on Pilypas Ruigys (1675-1749) linguistic attitudes, lexicographic methods and dictionaries. This volume of Archivum Lithuanicum includes many articles from East Prussian and German Lithuanistic studies, publications from German and Polish archives and libraries. 5 Archivum Lithuanicum 4 Jolanta Gelumbeckaitë, basing herself on new material (mostly from the Wolfenbüttel library), has written a historical study about a nobleman from Augsburg, Philipp Hainhofer (1578-1647), who was known in Europe as a diplo- mat, bibliophile and art collector. She describes his relations with Radvilas family members, with other noblemen of Lithuania. Especially interesting are the Lithuanian verses (1617) to Hainhofer by Alexander Sulatycky in the collection Carmina gratulatoria amicorum in felicissimum iter. Unfortunately, this text is greatly distorted and is not easy to decipher and interpret. Ona Aleknavièienë and Christiane Schiller in Halle (Archive of Francke) discov- ered a letter of March 20, 1729 by Ásrutis bishop Johann Behrendt. This letter revealed new information about the literary activity of the Seminar of Lithuanian Language in Halle, viz., that Behrendt was a follower of Michael Mörlins ideas about language [loquendum cum vulgo], that he translated and corrected Lithuanian texts, and refused to approve translations that were prepared in incorrect Lith- uanian. In another article the same two authors (Aleknavièienë, Schiller) write about a newly discovered copy (the second known) of the famous treatise Principium primarium in lingva Lithvanica (1706) by Michael Mörlin in Halle (University and Land of Saxony-Anhalt Library). After World War II for a long time not a single copy of the treatise was known. Approximately ten years ago Vincentas Drotvinas discovered a copy in Gdañsk. The newly discovered copy from Halle, unfortunately, is defective. Vincentas Drotvinas revises the biography of the same Michael Mörlin. He gives new information from the source that was published in 1708 by Michael Schreiber, viz., Michael Mörlins funeral sermon (the original is kept in the Toruñ University Library). Schreiber gives data mostly on Mörlins relatives (father, grandfather), on his youth and his university years, teachers and patrons. The sermon, which is not linguistic at all, emphasizes: Mörlin always used to speak correct Lithuanian, wherever he had an occasion. Gertrud Bense publishes four letters by Karl August Jordan to Halle University professor August Friedrich Pott of 1847-1850 (the originals are kept in the Univer- sity and Land Library of Saxony-Anhalt). These letters are of Lithuanistic content and they reveal social aspects of language history. Birutë Kabaðinskaitë reviews the facsimile edition (2001) of Jonas Bretkûnas Hymnal and other books (1589) prepared for publication by Guido Michelini. Kabaðinskaitë concludes that the determination of the sources from which Bretkûnas liturgical books were translated is not a finished job yet. Among the texts compiled in Lithuania Major the writings of the nineteenth century attract especially great attention. Roma Bonèkutë researches the Lithuanian book Historyia Szwenta (1823) by Simonas Stanevièius and concludes that 6 Archivum Lithuanicum 4 Stanevièius translated his book from Lhomonds Epitome Historiae Sacrae edition of 1811 (prepared by Liudvikas Sobolevskis [Ludwik Sobolewski] in Vilnius). She also establishes that Stanevièius avoided literal translation and found Lithuanian ana- logs to name the realia of the original, and that his translation should be regarded as being exact. Juozas Girdzijauskas searches for the genesis of the famous Lithuanian poem by Maironis Lietuva brangi (Dear Lithuania, 1927). Girdzijauskas demonstrates that this poem originated from another one Lietuvos graþybë (The Beauty of Lithuania), printed in the newspaper Varpas (1891), and that the latter poem in its turn was compiled from separate strophes of the poem Lietuva (1888). On the other hand the intermediate poem Lietuvos graþybë was changed (edited) by somebody else but not by the author Maironis himself. Stephan Kessler is happy at finding one more copy (the third one) of Antanas Strazdas (Antoni Drozdowski) book of verses Giesmies swietiszkas ir szwintas (Secu- lar and Holy Hymns, 1814) in the Czartoryscy Library in Cracow. Kessler reports that some diacritical marks should be reconstructed differently from the way they are reconstructed in the reprint of 1991. Ieva Ðenavièienë, who published an article in the second volume of Archivum Lithuanicum (ALt 2, 125-138), on when (ca. 1847) Motiejus Valanèius corrected Simonas Daukantas manuscript Maldos katalikø (Catholic Prayers) now supports her hypothesis with additional data. Vytautas Vitkauskas reviews the above-men- tioned book on the language of Kalikstas Kasakauskis by Giedrius Subaèius (2001). Jonas Palionis researches the old writings of Lithuania Major, i.e. he continues to trace Lithuanian words in Daukðas major work Poµtilla Catholicka (Catholic Sermons, 1599), which were omitted or erroneously reconstructed by Czesùaw Kudzinowski in his Index-Dictionary of Daukðas Poµtilla (1977). Palionis began this work in the first volume of Archivum Lithuanicum (ALt 1, 1999, 57-66). Pietro U. Dini also deals with old texts in Lithuania Major; he analyses the word murinas negro in Mikalojus Daukðas Cathechism (1595) and other texts of the 16th-17th century. William R. Schmalstieg reviews Wojciech Smoczyñskis collec- tion of articles (2001), which is devoted primarily to the origins of Lithuanian words. Bronius Maskuliunas reviews a book (2001) by Albertas Rosinas on the semantic and morphological structure of Mikalojus Daukðas pronouns. Saulius Ambrazas wrote an article on the status of adjectives with the suffix -iðkas(-a) with possessive meaning in old Lithuanian texts. He thinks that since these derivatives were
