CROSSING THE THRESHOLD: Hermes as Guide and Leader of Souls Brian Clark The Threshold to the Underworld The classical motif of the hero’s descent into the underworld or katabasis has been used in psychoanalytic writings (especially Jungian) as a metaphor for a descent into unconscious terrain, which is dark and unknown, contrary to the Olympian ideals of the ego. The underworld sphere is unlike anything the hero has known to date: the values, customs and laws of this domain are alien. The encounter with the underworld terrain is a rich metaphor for passages in a life when the psychological landscape shifts and becomes unfamiliar. These passages in one’s life are evoked out of a sense of loss, grief or an encounter with death. The space that separates the two spheres between what has been known, but now lost, and what is unknown but looming ahead is a liminal or suspended state. What the hero has previously known is now suspended; old forms of familiarity are not available. The hero, symbolic of the conscious knowing of self and mastery of the world that encompassed him, now faces a descent into an alien realm that is dark, foreign and dangerous. The threshold between these two worlds (between what is known, light and conscious and what is unknown, dark and unconscious) requires guidance and direction. Once the threshold has been crossed into the unknown, the hero cannot be in control of this world through his strength; his identity now is suspended and the fixed mental images that once bound him to the world are in flux. -

NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES • VOLUME 3 NUMBER 2 • APRIL 1982 Humanities Art, the essential historian BY JOHN CANADAY I would like to know, sometime, why some people are spontaneously attracted to art—the visual arts especially— while others who have been conditioned by apparently the same circumstances are left either cold or puzzled by some thing that has interested me as far back as 1 can remember, fascinated me since adolescence, and enriched my adult life beyond measure—with no explanation that I can reach as to why it happened. In our close-knit family of eight, books were plentiful (my father's shelf included Dante, Samuel Johnson, and George Meredith) and our Kimball upright piano was subjected to constant abuse. But until 1 began bringing pictures into the house there were almost none, except for family photo graphs, on the walls. The only ones I can remember were a chromo of a German mountain scene with peasants (which 1 recognize in retrospect as having been in the manner of Ferdinand Waldmixller), a reproduction of an early Taos painting showing an Indian dipping water from a stream, and a tinted mezzotint of Gainsborough's Duchess of Devonshire, none of which explains why as a teen-ager I developed a passion for Holbein drawings without ever having been inside an art museum or having seen, so far as I can remember, any art books. I have no idea why, how, or exactly when this first love was generated, but I do know that art from that time until now has been an increasingly potent form of communication with the past and an enlarge ment of the world around me. -

(Boswell 921) George Chapman, the first great translator of the Iliad into English, had little sympathy for his critics. "Envious Windfuckers," he called them (quoted Logue 1). The acerbic tone indicates that already in the early HOMER'S MODERN ENGLISH ILIADS 237 seventeenth century Chapman was conscious of carrying on a lively and established tradition, in which translators of the classics and the scholarly defenders of the original texts attacked each other with all the consider able rhetorical viciousness at their command. More than egos were involved, of course, since direct access to pagan texts, many of them masterpieces, conferred-and, to a far lesser but still significant extent (at least within the university) still confers-cultural power. -

Others create themselves. This book grew from a feminine strand of mitochondrial DNA that was stumbled upon in a Classical History course taught by a charismatic Professor, Glen Bugh of Virginia Tech. Dr. Bugh, an Hellenic epigrapher, often lectures aboard the Smithsonian’s sailing ship in the Mediterranean, educating and entertaining its passengers with the world that was around them 2500 years ago. During one lecture at Virginia Tech he mentioned briefly the papers of Wilhelmina van Ingen, a young girl, 22 years of age, who had attended the 1927-1928 American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA). She had participated in the first years dig at Olynthus in the Spring of 1928, working with Prof. David Robinson. Those papers were found in 15 boxes, totaling ~ 30 cubic feet of space in the Storage area for the Special Collections Division of Newman Library at Virginia Tech. Her husband Herschel Elarth donated the boxes to the University after Dr. van Ingen’s death in 1969. Only half of the collection was then inventoried, but the Control Folder of that material was intriguing. There were personal five-year diaries covering the period from 1927-1968, some personal letters she wrote to her Mother, shoeboxes full of postcards from travels she and her husband made around the world during their marriage, and a hodge-podge of personal papers and mementoes. -
