Laerskool Gene Louw Primary Hannah Enslin 5E3 Jaarverslag / Annual Report 2017 1. FOREWORD The past number of years we have seen the school’s enrolment increase. At present we have 1730 learners at our school. It remains a difficult task to try and control the influx of learners. Our full staff compliment is 105. This includes the ground staff. At present there are 48 people paid by the Department, which means that more than half of the staff at Gene Louw this year was paid by the Governing Body. 2. PERSONEEL Aan die begin van die jaar het mnre. J. Vermeulen en G. Louw, mejj. K. Tucker en Baker en mev. Febbraio by die personeel aangesluit. Aan die einde van Junie het mev. Della Cagna na twee jaar by Gene Louw ons verlaat. Mev. E. Wessels moes ook weens mediese redes die onderwysprofessie vaarwel roep. Sy was 12 jaar verbonde aan Gene Louw. Mej. M. Retief het ons ook na 10 jaar verlaat. At the beginning of the fourth term we said good-bye to Mr LW Wessels who accepted a promotion post at Fanie Theron. We were very fortunate to obtain the services of two staff members who were previously at Gene Louw, namely Ms Linka van Jaarsveld and Mrs Mariska Smith. The other appointments we made were Mrs Jana Jacobs in Grade 7 and Ms Nikki de Bruyn in Grade 3. Ons sê ook totsiens aan mev. H. Siebrits aan die einde van Januarie 2018 wanneer sy uit die diens tree. Sy is al 24 jaar verbonde aan Laerskool Gene Louw. The services of Dr Lené Janse van Rensburg, counsellor and play therapy specialist, was secured on a part-time basis to assist Miss Botha as additional counsellor. Dr Van Rensburg has recently joined her husband in the United Emirates and Dr Serahni Symington was appointed in her place as from the beginning of the fourth term. Renate Hanekom se eersteling, Lienke, is in Februarie gebore. Mev. Coreen van Rhyn het ook geboorte geskenk aan haar tweede seuntjie, Nicholas. Mnr. Myburgh het ook pa geword vir die eerste keer toe sy vrou geboorte geskenk het aan hul tweeling seuns, Dian en Janlo. Wedding bells also tolled. Mrs Lelani De Jongh-Hanekom got married to Lukas in April. 3. THE GOVERNING BODY The composition of the members is in accordance to the SA Schools Act of 1996. Parents: Mr E. Geldenhuys (Chairperson: IT) Educators: Mr B. van Rooyen Mrs M. du Plooy Mr L. Janse van Rensburg (2 IC: Co-opted) Mr A.C. van der Westhuizen (Principal: Ex Officio) Non-educators: Mrs I. Mynhardt (Secretary) The Governing Body meets once a month. A week prior to this, all the sub-committees meet. The Finance Committee is in charge of all financial aspects of the school. This entails the drawing up of the budget, together with the supervision and control of collection and payment of monies. I would like to thank the Governing Body for their input and the time which they dedicate to the school. Their main role is one of support and providing the necessary infrastructure and finances so that the Management Team and I can run the school effectively. Die huidige Beheerliggaam se termyn kom in Maart 2018 tot ‘n einde. Dit is ‘n riem onder die hart om te weet dat hulle die opvoeders en die kinders van ons skool se belange op die hart dra. Ongelukkig sê ons totsiens aan adv. Charlene Roux en mnr. K. Olsen aangesien hul kinders in graad 7 is en dat hulle nie volgende jaar meer ouers van Gene Louw gaan wees nie. 4.1 EISTEDDFOD (2017) ‘n Groot aantal leerders het in verskillende kategorieë van die Tygerberg Internasionale Eisteddfod deelgeneem. Ons het hierdie jaar 14 afdelingwenners gehad. Daar was 248 inskrywing waarvan 48 Hoogste Lof, 148 Lof, 48 Eervolle Vermelding en 4 Meriete toekennings ontvang is. 4.2 MUSIEK Daar is tans 155 musiekleerders wat klavier-, blokfluit-, dwarsfluit-, kitaar- en sangonderrig ontvang van 5 musiekopvoeders. Our music learners did us extremely proud. They fared exceptionally well in the various examinations. Piano: 34 Learners were entered for the various examinations. Classical Guitar: 16 Learners were entered for the Trinity Classical Guitar exams. By die Tygerberg Internasionale Eisteddfod het ons leerders pragtig presteer. Daar was 35 inskrywings vir Klavier en 50 inskrywings vir Solosang. Daar was 71 inskrywings vir Klassieke Kitaar by verskillende Eisteddfods. 4.3 KORE Both our choirs, yet again, performed brilliantly this year. The Junior Choir were the winners at the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod where they obtained a Cum Laude award. At the Tygerberg Eisteddfod they obtained a second place with 87%. Die Seniorkoor het vanjaar skoonskip gemaak by al die kompetisies waaraan hulle deelgeneem het. Hulle het albei afdelings by die Stellenbosch Eisteddfod gewen met twee Cum Laude- toekennings en hulle het die Tygerberg Eisteddfod met 92,3% gewen. Vir die 21ste jaar in ‘n ry is die Seniorkoor weer eens vanjaar uitgenooi na die ATKV Applouskompetisie se finaal in Pretoria waar ons die eerste plek sowel as die toekenning vir die beste uitvoering van die voorgeskrewe werk, behaal het. Ons was een van net twee kore wat by die hele kompetisie bo 90% gekry het. 4.4 GRADE 7 OPEN ASSEMBLY Our Grade 7 group took great pride in organising the open assembly for the day of Ascension. The learners were enthusiastic and took an active role in this joyful celebration. 4.5 KUNS Leerders se kreatiwiteit en vaardighede in Kuns is ontwikkel deur projekte waar hul met ‘n groot verskeidenheid mediums kon eksperimenteer. ‘n Groot hoeveelheid leerders se werke is met lof by die Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfod ontvang. By hierdie Eisteddfod is Brandon Steffens vereer as Visuele Kuns katogorie-wenner vir Graad 7-9. Verder het 2 van ons graad 6 leerders, Kayla Fourie en Sabrina Preston goue medaljes vir uitstaande kunswerke by die WKOD ontvang. Hul kunswerke is in September by die Iziko Suid Afrikaanse Nasionale Gallery uitgestal as deel van die Visuele Kunste Viering program wat deur die WKOD aangebied is. Since middle last year the Foundation Phase learners have received art classes from a specialist art teacher. The emphasis being that the art classes must be an enjoyable experience. The artwork of 51 Foundation Phase learners was entered for the Tygerberg and the Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfods. All our learners did extremely well and the results were very positive. 4.6 HOOGTEPUNTE Die leerders in die Grondslagfase het die baie gewilde en beminde Storieboom-leesboek karaktertjies in aksie gesien. Hierdie jaar se produksie getiteld, “Vlooi en die Koninginby”, het vir ‘n ongelooflike avontuur gesorg wat by die Kunstekaap afgespeel het. Storieskip het hierdie jaar ‘n voortreflike produksie “Koejawel en die ruimte seerowers se nuwe klere” na Gene Louw se verhoog gebring. Die boodskap en lesse is op ‘n kreatiewe wyse aan die leerders oorgedra. Die opvoering was propvol humor, aksie en intriges vir oud en jonk. Verskeie kunstenaaars onder wie Desmond Wells en Wilco van Wyk het die leerders gedurende die laaste twee weke van die jaar vermaak. Die graad 1’s het op ‘n uitstappie na die Gumboot-partytjie-plaas buite D’Urbanvale gegaan. Hulle het gehelp koeie melk en eiers uit die hoenderneste gehaal. Hulle het ook van die vars melk geproe. Die besoek sluit aan by die tema “Diere en Voedselgroepe”. The Grade 2’s watched the “Incredible Dog Show” in February. The children were amazed by all the tricks performed by five incredibly smart dogs. The message of love and respect for animals came across very strongly. Everyone was left with a renewed appreciation for furry friends. They also visited the Two Oceans Aquarium. This was the first year we had the privilege to go. The learners thoroughly enjoyed the informative sessions. The new "underwater" tunnel was also a favourite attraction. Die gr 3-klasse het ‘n besoek ontvang van A Plus Edutainment. Die onderwerp van die dag was Heuningbye en hul korwe. Die leerders het na ‘n aanbieding gekyk en kon aan ‘n reuse “by” vat. Hulle het na ‘n storie oor bye geluister en ter afsluiting ‘n bye-dans aangeleer. Die graad 3’s het ook Butterfly World besoek. Hulle het daar na ‘n praatjie geluister, gevolg deur ‘n begeleide toer. Daarna het die leerders ‘n wonderlike piekniek geniet. The Grade 4’s went on an outing to the Iziko Museum during the first term. They also went on an outing to the Cape Town Science Centre during the third term. They were exposed to a variety of activities presented by the Science Centre team. All the activities were done in a group setting to develop teamwork and social skills. The Grade 5 learners attended the SOS farm outside Villiersdorp. On arrival, the learners were split into two camps, the Mountain and the River camps, which function independently during the three days. All activities were done on a competitive basis. The activities included bundu bashing, canoeing, building a shelter, swimming and feeding the animals. Later in the year they also went on an outing to the Spur. There they discovered and learnt more about the food pyramid, running a restaurant and working under pressure. In April, the Grade 6 learners went on a camp to Wellington at the Bergkroon camp.
