Harper HEAD’S LETTER continued... If creating relevant and meaningful experiences builds positively into a student’s learning environment, and I think it does, the term ahead is set to be a very rich one for the Somerset College community. On 24 July, the esteemed lawyer and businessman Mr Hugh Herman, a former Director of Investec, will be addressing senior students; we have a very special guest to address all students for the David Wynne lecture on 7 August and a wonderful Old Oak to speak at Founders’ Day. These events, together with the academic programme, the Pops Concert, the Business Breakfast (for parents), Derby Days, sports events and other activities, should make for excellent learning opportunities this term. Sadly Mrs Tini Visser will be leaving Somerset College at the end of July. She has been granted a disability benefit by her life insurer as she has struggled with ill health for many years. Mrs Visser initiated the process and is relieved and delighted with the outcome. We wish her well with her future endeavours. I trust that you will engage positively with all there is at College to ensure a meaningful and worthwhile term for yourselves and your children. PUBLIC RELATIONS REPORT BACK ANNUAL PR PORTFOLIO OUTING On Tuesday, 24 June, a group of 17 Public Relations students embarked on an annual PR Portfolio outing to Cape Town. We started the day with Mr Duncan Luke, a founder of the World Economic Forum Shaper and The Social Collective. He shared his journey with us, becoming an entrepreneur at the young age of just seventeen, he then went on to study at AAA School of Advertising. Soon after he started his own advertising company, Pinstriped Ad- vertising. After which, his new adventure lead him to a new company that deals with start-up busi- nesses. Here he is extremely busy learning about new initiatives. Mr Luke, still plays a large role in the President's Award Programme and is heavily invested in social development programmes in our underprivileged areas. We then took a short walk through the city centre to meet with Wayne Gosling, CEO of Groupon South Africa. Mr Gosling shared with us how his company runs and all the different contributing factors. He also shared a little of his own background, initially starting a cou- poning company, Twangoo. After two years Twangoo was bought out by Groupon the world wide couponing company. Mr Gosling explained how they advertise different companies and how their relationships work. Towards the end of the presentation Mr Gosling gave us insight into where Groupon is going in the near future, which left many jaws hanging. The group then travelled to the V&A Waterfront where we all enjoyed some lunch and light entertainment. Our final stop for the day was with Quirk Advertising Agency. Here we were welcomed by Greg Schneider, Quirk Agency's marketing strategist and Alexia Theocharis, a marketing graduate, who had gone to great lengths to accommodate us. We started on a positive note as there were endless snacks on the table for all of us to enjoy. Quirk had put together a special multimedia presentation for our students. This included, what Quirk is about, where they started and then some interactive clips of the pieces and projects that they have worked on. The presentation aimed to show us how important it was to understand social media and the advertising that comes along with it as this is our future. At the end of the discussion we were able to find out how we could get involved with such an innovative company. Overall the day was a huge success for the Public Relations Team and we look forward to our next outing. Demi Rawstorne – Student Leader: PR Portfolio The PR Portfolio began the annual PR outing initiative in 2013. The aim being to expose Somerset College students to the world of work, particularly in the fields of PR, Marketing and Advertising. We have been amazed by the generosity of companies in terms of sharing their time and their expertise. The students have also come to realize that the degree you study at university is not necessarily the career path you end up following! Sometimes, you just have to be in the right place at the right time! Duncan Luke, a successful entrepreneur in his own right, was truly inspiration. He encouraged the students to try and merge their career path with something that they are passion- ate about. Through the President’s Award, his passion for social responsibility grew and he has managed to create a career for himself that aspires to help disadvantaged communities. He also encouraged them to start their own businesses rather than follow traditional career paths. To this end he stressed the importance of making connec- tions (while at school and at university) because it is often a case of “who you know, not what you know” when try- ing to set up a business. All three companies stressed the value and importance of using social media to get the message across to the public.
