MY LIFE IN “THE WAY” by Gaylene Goodroad 1 My Life in “The Way” RENOUNCING “THE WAY” OF THE EAST “At the time of my conversion, I had also dedicated over 13 years of my life to the martial arts. Through the literal sweat of my brow, I had achieved not one, but two coveted black belts, promoting that year to second degree—Sensei Nidan. I had studied under some internationally recognized karate masters, and had accumulated a room full of trophies while Steve was stationed on the island of Oahu. “I had unwittingly become a teacher of Far Eastern mysticism, which is the source of all karate—despite the American claim to the contrary. I studied well and had been a follower of karate-do: “the way of the empty hand”. I had also taught others the way of karate, including a group of marines stationed at Pearl Harbor. I had led them and others along the same stray path of “spiritual enlightenment,” a destiny devoid of Christ.” ~ Paper Hearts, Author’s Testimony, pg. 13 AUTHOR’S NOTE: In 1992, I renounced both of my black belts, after discovering the sobering truth about my chosen vocation in light of my Christian faith. For the years since, I have grieved over the fact that I was a teacher of “the Way” to many dear souls—including children. Although I can never undo that grievous error, my prayer is that some may heed what I have written here. What you are about to read is a sobering examination of the martial arts— based on years of hands-on experience and training in karate-do—and an earnest study of the Scriptures. -

I concentrate on the founder Wang Xiangzhai , his successor Yao Zongxun and his twin sons, especially my Teacher – Yao Chengguang . This e-book will provide you with information about facts and people, and should also help you to understand the process of yiquan development better. But please remember that descriptions of events, especially fights and challenges, are based on orally passed subjective relations, and written down by someone else at much later time. Because my research was based on Chinese sources, where names of foreigners writ- ten in Chinese, are then pronounced very different than originally, I was not able to recon- struct original form of names of Europeans in some cases. -

Twisted Trails of the Wold West By Matthew Baugh © 2006 The Old West was an interesting place, and even more so in the Wold- Newton Universe. Until fairly recently only a few of the heroes and villains who inhabited the early western United States had been confirmed through crossover stories as existing in the WNU. Several comic book miniseries have done a lot to change this, and though there are some problems fitting each into the tapestry of the WNU, it has been worth the effort. Marvel Comics’ miniseries, Rawhide Kid: Slap Leather was a humorous storyline, parodying the Kid’s established image and lampooning westerns in general. It is best known for ‘outing’ the Kid as a homosexual. While that assertion remains an open issue with fans, it isn’t what causes the problems with incorporating the story into the WNU. What is of more concern are the blatant anachronisms and impossibilities the story offers. We can accept it, but only with the caveat that some of the details have been distorted for comic effect. When the Rawhide Kid is established as a character in the Wold-Newton Universe he provides links to a number of other western characters, both from the Marvel Universe and from classic western novels and movies. It draws in the Marvel Comics series’ Blaze of Glory, Apache Skies, and Sunset Riders as wall as DC Comics’ The Kents. As with most Marvel and DC characters there is the problem with bringing in the mammoth superhero continuities of the Marvel and DC universes, though this is not insurmountable. -

Introduction
INTRODUCTION The wuxia film is the oldest genre in the Chinese cinema that has remained popular to the present day. Yet despite its longevity, its history has barely been told until fairly recently, as if there was some force denying that it ever existed. Indeed, the genre was as good as non-existent in China, its country of birth, for some fifty years, being proscribed over that time, while in Hong Kong, where it flowered, it was gen- erally derided by critics and largely neglected by film historians. In recent years, it has garnered a following not only among fans but serious scholars. David Bordwell, Zhang Zhen, David Desser and Leon Hunt have treated the wuxia film with the crit- ical respect that it deserves, addressing it in the contexts of larger studies of Hong Kong cinema (Bordwell), the Chinese cinema (Zhang), or the generic martial arts action film and the genre known as kung fu (Desser and Hunt).1 In China, Chen Mo and Jia Leilei have published specific histories, their books sharing the same title, ‘A History of the Chinese Wuxia Film’ , both issued in 2005.2 This book also offers a specific history of the wuxia film, the first in the English language to do so. It covers the evolution and expansion of the genre from its beginnings in the early Chinese cinema based in Shanghai to its transposition to the film industries in Hong Kong and Taiwan and its eventual shift back to the Mainland in its present phase of development. Subject and Terminology Before beginning this history, it is necessary first to settle the question ofterminology , in the process of which, the characteristics of the genre will also be outlined. -

BA SHI – The Eight Basic Stances The Foundation of Kung Fu By Richard Miller Kung fu (hard work and dedication to a skill over a long period of time), wu shu (martial art), guo shu (Chinese martial art), and ji ji (fighting technique) are all terms frequently used to mean Chinese mar- tial arts. Two terms not so often heard are bai da (bare hand fighting) and chuan yong (possession of brave spirit and martial technique). In Northern China an additional term, ba shi, is used. Aside from ba shi's broad meaning, signifying martial art, is a more specialized reference: The Eight Basic Stances. Author performs deep horse stance in the Chen taiji quan lao jia form It is said that 70% of Northern Chinese kung fu is “leg,” and that 30% is “hand.” It is commonly thought that the 70% refers to kicking. This is a misconception. In fact, the 70% refers to what the Chi- nese call bu, meaning step or footwork. The ba shi is a fundamental tool in training the legs for powerful, decisive footwork. Practicing the ba shi, however, builds not only physical strength, it cultivates qi, and the instrument of mental strength: a calm, patient mind. Sifu Adam Hsu has researched the ba shi. During the more than 20 years of his own martial arts study, he has seen the ba shi taught in many different styles and by many different sifus. He has noticed that only the first six of the eight stances are standard: qi ma shi (horse-riding stance), gong jian shi (bow- and-arrow stance), xi shi (empty-leg stance), pu tui shi (low leg-stretching stance), du li shi (single-leg 1 stance), zuo pan shi (seated-on-own-twisted-leg stance). -

Yihequan, Liguajiao, Hongquan e Meihuaquan Di Storti Enrico Questo mio lavoro vuole rimettere in campo delle nozioni storiche già ampiamente documentate e sottoposte ad analisi critica soprattutto da studiosi Cinesi e Americani. In lingua Italiana ho trovato, all’altezza di questi, unicamente la Tesi di Laurea del Dr. Smolari Fabio, ma sicuramente ci saranno altri scritti non a mia conoscenza. Il mio lavoro è molto più modesto e vuole essere da stimolo ad altri, più titolati di me, verso un approfondimento, ma soprattutto verso la diffusione delle conoscenze a tutti. In particolare ho voluto sistematizzare i resoconti storici dei legami intercorsi tra Yihequan, Liguajiao, Hongquan e Meihuaquan che a volte paiono più di un semplice caso, lasciando però aperta la possibilità al contraddittorio. Nel fare ciò parto dalla mia appartenenza alla Scuola Meihuaquan e dalle ricerche svolte in loco su questo stile. Il Meihuaquan si presenta con notevoli varianti sia tecniche che culturali, che indicano l’influenza di esperienze esterne siano esse Dottrinali o Marziali. Diventa perciò difficile fare un discorso univoco e finalmente totalmente chiarificatore. Allo stesso modo le fonti storiche sono poco chiare sulla tecnica marziale, per cui risulta arduo un confronto con gli stili di Wushu, mentre le fonti delle Scuole di Pugilato sono sovente auto referenziali. Naturalmente nel corso dello studio di questi temi da parte mia ho maturato alcune convinzioni, che potrebbero anche non avere un fondamento storico,o meglio che sono di natura indiziaria. Lungi dal dimostrarlo, leggendo i vari testi storici ho avuto l’idea che il Meihuaquan sia un emanazione dell’Hongquan e che nel corso degli ultimi trecento anni si sono fortemente influenzati a vicenda.
