Techniques include ways to help you keep flexible, energetic, optimistic and vital throughout all stages of your life. Master Rod Ferguson presents “Distilling the Essence” of Tai Chi and Qigong, drawing on the three major influences; The Chinese Traditional Health System; Chinese Martial Art - science of body awareness and movement; Culture - The philosophy behind Traditional Chinese thought and lifestyle. “Zen” totally present - “Tao” completely natural - “Wu Wei” action through non-action For hundreds of years Westerners have been puzzled at seeing Chinese doing this effortless, rhythmical, ballet like exercise both at dawn and at dusk. The Chinese says “whoever practices Tai Chi, correctly and regularly, twice a day over a period of time will gain the pliability of a child, the health of a lumber-jack, and the peace of mind of a sage”. Western medical research is now confirming that Tai Chi can indeed treat and heal many illnesses that western medicine is unable to. At the forefront are: Stress Control, Falls Prevention, Arthritis, Diabetes, Parkinson’s Disease, Tuberculosis etc. , with more being added progressively. (Grandmaster Khor and Master Rod Ferguson will be presenting such techniques at the Geriatric Conference and The Australian and New Zealand Conference on Falls Prevention at the Otago University in November this year.) A sample of the things you will experience TAOIST QIGONG How To Cultivate Chi Energy? First learn to let go and give yourself totally over to relaxation. That means you throw every bone and muscle of the body wide open so that the chi may travel unobstructed. Once this is done, the chest must be further relaxed and the chi made to sink to the navel. Then concentrate on the Chi and softness in your navel (Tan Tien). After a time the chi will be felt in the navel, from where it will begin to circulate throughout the body. Later, you will be able to direct the chi instantaneously to any part of your body by means of your mind. TAI CHI FOR SELF PROTECTION A touch here, a shift there, a twist with your waist, and the attacker is sent tumbling to the floor. Neither strength nor violence required! Such skills are normally only possessed by highly trained masters. So, can mere mortals learn and master such skill? Yes you can! Grandmaster Khor has designed a Tai Chi Self Protection program to enable you to defend yourself against aggressors. You need not be victimised by bullies or be afraid of having your bags snatched anymore. You can defend yourself and you do not need big muscles to do it. Friday 7pm to 8.30pm Master Class Workshop – Pole – Grandmaster Khor & Master Rod The Shoulder Pole is considered to be the father of all weapons. The stick was one of the first utensils to poke, prod or dig and was also used as an implement for carrying loads but could also used as a weapon of defence. The pole is also a practical apparatus for exercise, very good for upper back and good posture. The session will be in two parts:- history, principles and technique detailed refinement of selected movements You haven’t done the Pole? Come along and watch or try out some movements for yourself, all levels welcome. Stay for Chinese tea and snacks, and renew old friendships or make some new ones! Saturday 10am to 12 noon PREVENTION HEALTH & HEALING Keynote Address - Grandmaster Khor and launch of the new Falls DVD Master Rod - Distilling the Essence - Applied Tai Chi for Healthy Ageing & Glowing Health Saturday 1pm to 4pm TAOIST SKILLS - Grandmaster Khor Find out how to increase your stretching ... The Shaolin Monastery (Chinese: 少林寺 ) is a Chan (Zen) Buddhist temple at Song Shan (mountain) near Dengfeng, China. Founded in the 5th century, the monastery is long famous for its association with Chinese martial arts and particularly with Shaolin Kung Fu. The popular television series “Kung Fu” starring David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine introduced the Shaolin arts to the West in the 1970s. The Shaolin Monastery and its famed Pagoda Forest were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 as part of the "Historic Monuments of China". You can also visit these places with Grandmaster Khor on our China tour. ______________________________ Brisbane Seminar 29-31 October 2010 - Don’t miss out! Book early! Disease risk management, self-care, reduction of negative drug interactions, falls and injury prevention, stress management, holistic health care, and mind/body medicine are a few examples of these innovations. An integral part of this evolution of health care has been the growing importance of various forms of exercise modalities originating from Asia, including Qi Gong and Tai Chi. Qi Gong and Tai Chi are practices involving movement and meditation based on ancient Chinese philosophies that are purported to promote mental and physical health, vitality, and longevity. Refined in Asia for hundreds of years as a means of promoting health and functional well-being, these practices are also revered for the cultivation of social and spiritual values.1 In recent years, increasing attention in the West has focused on the benefits of Qi Gong and Tai Chi as forms of gentle physical activity for promoting health and well-being and as a moving meditation for stress management and disease risk reduction.

  • 'Christian' Martial Arts
MY LIFE IN “THE WAY” by Gaylene Goodroad 1 My Life in “The Way” RENOUNCING “THE WAY” OF THE EAST “At the time of my conversion, I had also dedicated over 13 years of my life to the martial arts. Through the literal sweat of my brow, I had achieved not one, but two coveted black belts, promoting that year to second degree—Sensei Nidan. I had studied under some internationally recognized karate masters, and had accumulated a room full of trophies while Steve was stationed on the island of Oahu. “I had unwittingly become a teacher of Far Eastern mysticism, which is the source of all karate—despite the American claim to the contrary. I studied well and had been a follower of karate-do: “the way of the empty hand”. I had also taught others the way of karate, including a group of marines stationed at Pearl Harbor. I had led them and others along the same stray path of “spiritual enlightenment,” a destiny devoid of Christ.” ~ Paper Hearts, Author’s Testimony, pg. 13 AUTHOR’S NOTE: In 1992, I renounced both of my black belts, after discovering the sobering truth about my chosen vocation in light of my Christian faith. For the years since, I have grieved over the fact that I was a teacher of “the Way” to many dear souls—including children. Although I can never undo that grievous error, my prayer is that some may heed what I have written here. What you are about to read is a sobering examination of the martial arts— based on years of hands-on experience and training in karate-do—and an earnest study of the Scriptures.

  • Twisted Trails of the Wold West by Matthew Baugh © 2006
Twisted Trails of the Wold West By Matthew Baugh © 2006 The Old West was an interesting place, and even more so in the Wold- Newton Universe. Until fairly recently only a few of the heroes and villains who inhabited the early western United States had been confirmed through crossover stories as existing in the WNU. Several comic book miniseries have done a lot to change this, and though there are some problems fitting each into the tapestry of the WNU, it has been worth the effort. Marvel Comics’ miniseries, Rawhide Kid: Slap Leather was a humorous storyline, parodying the Kid’s established image and lampooning westerns in general. It is best known for ‘outing’ the Kid as a homosexual. While that assertion remains an open issue with fans, it isn’t what causes the problems with incorporating the story into the WNU. What is of more concern are the blatant anachronisms and impossibilities the story offers. We can accept it, but only with the caveat that some of the details have been distorted for comic effect. When the Rawhide Kid is established as a character in the Wold-Newton Universe he provides links to a number of other western characters, both from the Marvel Universe and from classic western novels and movies. It draws in the Marvel Comics series’ Blaze of Glory, Apache Skies, and Sunset Riders as wall as DC Comics’ The Kents. As with most Marvel and DC characters there is the problem with bringing in the mammoth superhero continuities of the Marvel and DC universes, though this is not insurmountable.

Tai chi and qi gong are mind-body practices that have been used for thousands of years to promote health. Tai chi is one form of qi gong, but there are some differences in how they are practiced. Both target the energy of the body, traditionally called “qi” (pronounced “chee”), via focused breath and movements. Tai chi means “Grand Ultimate Fist” in Chinese, and it has origins in various martial arts practices. Author of the Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi, Dr. Peter Wayne, describes tai chi practice in terms of “eight active ingredients:”1 1. Awareness: Tai chi practice develops focus and mindful awareness. 2. Intention: Tai chi practice actively uses images and visualization to enhance its health effects.

This event included a speech by Taoist (Daoist) priest and Wudang San Feng Pai Master Zhou Xuan Yun and the presentation of important Wudang historical documents and artifacts for a permanent display at the Library. Wudang Wellness Re-established in recent decades, Wudang San Feng Pai is an organization in China, which researches, preserves, teaches and promotes Wudang Kung Fu, which was said originally created by the 13th century Taoist Monk Zhang San Feng. Some believe that Zhang San Feng created Tai Chi (Taiji) Chuan (boxing) by observing the fight between a crane and a snake. Zhang was a hermit and lived in the Wudang Mountains to develop his profound philosophy on Taoism (Daoism), internal martial arts and internal alchemy. The Wudang Mountains are the mecca of Taoism and its temples are protected as one of 730 registered World Heritage sites of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Wudang Kung Fu encompasses a wide range of bare-hand forms of Tai Chi, Xingyi and Bagua as well as weapon forms for health and self-defense purposes. Traditionally, it was taught to Taoist priests only. It was prohibited to practice during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966- 1976).
