2020 KEYNOTE AND PLENARY DESCRIPTIONS Keynote: Ken Cohen Keynote Title: The Way of Qigong: Ancient Roots, Scientific Branches Description: In the fifth century BCE Lao Zi, the founder of Daoism, wrote, “Returning to the root is called tranquility and the renewal of life.” In this dynamic talk, Ken Cohen will explore the ancient sources of qigong in Shamanism, Daoism, and Chinese medicine, and how qigong’s healing benefits are validated by modern science. Yet qigong is far more than a complementary therapy; rather, through its gentle exercises and meditations, it links us to the source of life energy in the universe, what in China is called “the original qi of Heaven and Earth.” It thus reboots the body’s entire healing system and restores balance and harmony. Bio: Ken Cohen, M.A. (www.qigonghealing.com) is a renowned Qigong Grandmaster, author of The Way of Qigong (Random House) and more than 250 journal articles, including various works in the Chinese language. Disease risk management, self-care, reduction of negative drug interactions, falls and injury prevention, stress management, holistic health care, and mind/body medicine are a few examples of these innovations. An integral part of this evolution of health care has been the growing importance of various forms of exercise modalities originating from Asia, including Qi Gong and Tai Chi. Qi Gong and Tai Chi are practices involving movement and meditation based on ancient Chinese philosophies that are purported to promote mental and physical health, vitality, and longevity. Refined in Asia for hundreds of years as a means of promoting health and functional well-being, these practices are also revered for the cultivation of social and spiritual values.1 In recent years, increasing attention in the West has focused on the benefits of Qi Gong and Tai Chi as forms of gentle physical activity for promoting health and well-being and as a moving meditation for stress management and disease risk reduction. -

Fighting and dancing games both emerge from Asia, and they both foreground the body. They strip down bodily movement into elemental actions like stepping, kicking, leaping, and tapping, and make these the form and content of the game. I argue that fighting and dancing games point to a key dynamic in videogame play: the programming of the body into the algorithmic logic of the game, a logic that increasingly organizes the informatic structure of everyday work and leisure in a globally interconnected information economy. -

Zhou Xuan Yun On Feb. 1, 2013, the Library of Congress of the United States hosted an event to receive Wudang San Feng Pai. This event included a speech by Taoist (Daoist) priest and Wudang San Feng Pai Master Zhou Xuan Yun and the presentation of important Wudang historical documents and artifacts for a permanent display at the Library. Wudang Wellness Re-established in recent decades, Wudang San Feng Pai is an organization in China, which researches, preserves, teaches and promotes Wudang Kung Fu, which was said originally created by the 13th century Taoist Monk Zhang San Feng. Some believe that Zhang San Feng created Tai Chi (Taiji) Chuan (boxing) by observing the fight between a crane and a snake. Zhang was a hermit and lived in the Wudang Mountains to develop his profound philosophy on Taoism (Daoism), internal martial arts and internal alchemy. The Wudang Mountains are the mecca of Taoism and its temples are protected as one of 730 registered World Heritage sites of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Wudang Kung Fu encompasses a wide range of bare-hand forms of Tai Chi, Xingyi and Bagua as well as weapon forms for health and self-defense purposes. Traditionally, it was taught to Taoist priests only. It was prohibited to practice during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966- 1976). -

UCR Student Recreation Center T'ai-Chi Ch'uan Class Warning: If you are over 40 years or have any medical condition, before taking this exercise class please clear this class with your medical care provider. Participation will assume that you have cleared the class with your Doctor. Do not do any exercise that causes discomfort or pain. Stop exercise immediately if you feel light-headed or dizzy. Do not come to class with an acute illness. What is T'ai-chi ch'uan? T'ai-chi ch'uan, also spelled taijiquan, was developed as a martial art and longevity exercise between 700 and 300 years ago. It still is taught as both a martial art and longevity art. As early as the 1930's it was found to have varied and profound health benefits. Today it is primarily practiced as a "Mind-body" and Health Promotion exercise. It is one of the best stress reduction methods. It is a low intensity exercise, low impact, suitable to people of all ages and fitness levels. If you can walk, you can practice tai chi. T'ai-chi is shown to help some people improve balance and just feel better about themselves. People take our t'ai-chi classes to Improve their Health, Reduce Stress, Improve or lower their high blood pressure. Many of our students have told us that their blood pressure is now under control after their first series of t'ai-chi and our O'mei chi kung classes. Very importantly increased balance is reported, even in people of advanced age. -

3 Techniques of Dantian Internal Rotaion and Use of Meridians in Chen Family Taijiquan by Bosco Seung-Chul Baek (白承哲) B.S. Photo by Chris Soule Introduction Chen Family Taijiquan (陳氏太極拳: chénshìtàijíquán) is the mother form of Tajiquan from which all other Taiji styles are ultimately derived. The 9th generation of Chen Family representative, Chen Wangting, created Taijiquan from heritages of his past generations about 400 years ago. Unlike other Taijiquan styles, Chen Family Taijiquan still possesses explosive power (發勁: fājìn) expressed in the Cannon Fist forms. Authentic Taijiquan requires a harmony of 4 characteristics that are sturdiness, softness, fastness and slowness, and it is impossible to master Chen Family Taijiquan without these characteristics. Chen Family Taijiquan aims to acquire fangsong (relaxed and grounded) by practicing slowness such as Laojia Yilu (老架一路: lǎojiàyílù, Old Frame Fist Road) as it helps deeply relax the muscles, joints and spine while breathing naturally. Training with speed such as in the Laojia Erlu form (老架二路: lǎojiàèrlù, Old Frame Second Road) helps a practitioner understand the use of the fast energy exchange of the positive and negative force (yin and yang) to increase the power of one‟s dantian. If a practitioner practices with authentic instruction, he or she should be able to get the root of the dantian (丹田根:dāntiángēn) and control dantian internal rotation (丹田內轉: dāntiánnèizhuàn). Before these steps, it is required to open one‟s dantian and energy pathways so that the dantian circulates qi powerfully. In other words, the energy blocked areas in the body will be pierced out due to powerful qi circulation. -

What Is “Chi Kung” Or “Qigong”
Guelph Tai Chi for Health What is “chi kung” or “qigong” Definition: the work you do to produce energy or chi; cultivation of energy; breath work Qigong is usually divided into two categories, nei dan and wei dan . Nei dan : static, internal These forms of qigong are performed internally. They include all kinds of practices that exhibit very little external motion. Meditation is one example of nei dan qigong. Think of the body switching from energy consuming to energy restoring. Nei dan is practiced standing, sitting or lying down. The movement of energy around the body in the “microcosmic orbit” or “Universal post” exercise is another good example of nei dan qigong. Sometimes qigong is translated as “breath control exercise”. This is very important in nei dan practice. The breath is controlled in four ways: • Relaxing • Focus is on abdominal breathing • Sending breath to the abdomen by using directed thoughts • Use of certain words such as “ohm”, or the six healing sounds. The mind is very focused. Five major ways of focusing the mind are: • Focus the mind on specific acupoints – the top of the head (baihui), the soles of the feet (yongchuan) • Focus on beautiful or peaceful images • Focus on a specific person, idea, memory • Focus on the sound and meaning of words like “relax”, “be tranquil”, “let go” • Focus on specific lines, channels or meridians of energy Universal Post – standing meditation Wei dan: dynamic, external qigong Like nei dan, wei dan uses breathing and control of the mind to stimulate the flow of energy through the body, but unlike the static postures of nei dan, wei dan involves movement.
