4 | annual report 2010 The Henry Ford is famed for preserving America’s traditions. But within the organization, we are constantly evolving. Henry Ford was widely quoted as saying, “History is more or less bunk.” But the rest of what he said – the most important part – is rarely quoted: “The only history that is worth a tinker’s damn is the history we make today.” The Henry Ford has never been about studying history merely for its own sake. Since our beginning, our mission has been to explore and share the ideas, objects and people who have changed the lives of average Americans. Our goal is to inspire people with America’s traditions of ingenuity, resourcefulness and innovation in order to help them shape a better world. In short, The Henry Ford is not

Photo by Roy Ritchie just about our past. It is about our future, as well. As a result, The Henry Ford is a dynamic institution where changes are constantly taking place. In 2010, as a centerpiece of that change, The Henry Ford adopted a new 10-year strategic plan and vision that will drive the organizational changes that will help us fulfill our purpose. Our new Vision 2020 strategic plan states, “The Henry Ford will be a nationally recognized destination and force for fueling the spirit of American innovation and inspiring a can-do culture.” As The Henry Ford set out to meet this ambitious new vision, three primary strategies were identified: Innovation, Experiences and Engagement, and Collections and Access. Even before the year ended, those strategies were defining and driving our work. This Annual Report describes the changes that took place at The Henry Ford in 2010 to reach our vision using these three strategies.

annual report 2010 | 3 INNOVATION

The Henry Ford has been collecting America’s most pivotal and influential stories of innovation since 1929. From the Agricultural Revolution and the Industrial Revolution right through to today’s Information Age, Henry Ford Museum® recounts the nation’s most notable stories of progress and transformation. In one of our newest endeavors, The Henry Ford is focusing on the stories of present-day innovators. What started in 2008 with a single interview with barrier-breaking IndyCar driver Lyn St. James has snowballed into a creative collaborative with some of the world’s greatest innovators, from Pierre Omidyar, founder of eBay, to Bill Gates, Martha Stewart, Steve Wozniak and more. We call this project OnInnovation.com. Through OnInnovation.com, we are making the stories of great American innovators accessible everywhere people have access to the Internet. OnInnovation.com is one of the many ways in which The Henry Ford is playing a national role in advancing a culture of innovation in America. It’s a huge role, but it is one that we are uniquely positioned to play. The website has a broad audience: educators, lifelong learners, business people and people who are simply in search of inspiration. By making these resources available to the public, these stories are providing inspiration for tomorrow’s up-and-coming innovators. By linking contemporary stories to the stories of historic innovators, we offer a unique lens that may just ignite unique solutions. Another new feature is the Innovation 101 curriculum, a five-part interactive course designed for use in K-12 classrooms. Innovation 101 uses the video interviews on OnInnovation.com and builds lesson plans and activities around them to help teachers, students and other youth service providers connect to and reinforce 21st-century skills. The OnInnovation.com website is not the only place where visitors encountered inventive approaches to fulfilling our mission.

annual report 2010 | 5 EXPERIENCES & ENGAGEMENT

Maker Faire® – From Motor City to Maker City In July, The Henry Ford launched a major new event called Maker Faire Detroit. It was intended to stimulate a culture of innovation in a very concrete way. Maker Faire Detroit was presented in partnership with MAKE magazine. It originated in San Mateo, Calif., as a way for maker/enthusiasts to get together and share their creations. Henry Ford himself was a “maker” whose inveterate tinkering eventually changed the world around him. This “learning by doing” philosophy is at the heart of Maker Faire’s philosophy and has long been part of metropolitan Detroit’s DNA. By bringing Maker Faire to Michigan, The Henry Ford set out to reinvigorate a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship that can help Michigan rebound from its current economic situation. More than 300 makers presented their creations during the 2-day festival, which took place both inside Henry Ford Museum and the adjacent west parking lot. Participants came from across the country. Our first Maker Faire attracted nearly 20,000 visitors over two days, inspiring us to schedule a second Maker Faire Detroit on July 30-31, 2011.

2010 Museum Gallery Exhibitions The Flex Gallery in Henry Ford Museum regularly hosts temporary exhibits that expand on and enhance various elements of our own permanent collection. These were among several notable exhibits presented in 2010.

Good Design: Stories from Herman Miller The Good Design exhibit, developed in collaboration with the Muskegon Museum of Art, was created as a touring exhibit that explored the problem-solving design process employed at Herman Miller, Inc., a world-renowned West Michigan-based furniture company long famed for its groundbreaking designs.

annual report 2010 | 7 Good Design: Stories from Herman Miller incorporated many resources of The Henry Ford’s Herman Miller Design Collection, a comprehensive archive of the company’s innovative processes and products, most of which have never been on public view. Interestingly, the focus of the exhibit was not on the artifacts themselves, but on the process of innovation used to create them. The exhibit was made up of four case studies, each demonstrating how good design explores, inquires, engages and endures.

George Washington Carver Exhibit Organized by The Field Museum in in collaboration with Tuskegee University and the , this exhibit explored the life’s work of one of America’s most innovative and indefatigable researchers. Born into slavery in a tiny Missouri town during the final year of the Civil War, Carver went on to become one of America’s most notable and prolific agricultural scientists. Chemist, researcher, inventor and revered educator, he also had a profound impact as a social activist. The exhibit enabled visitors to explore the curiosity, persistence and passion for education that fueled Carver’s quiet and determined goal to harness nature’s power for the benefit of those in need.

Inspirational Annual Events The Henry Ford was home to annual signature events that inspire visitors year after year. A few of these are highlighted below.

Ragtime Street Fair This newest Greenfield Village® event focused on the ragtime era of the early 20th century. It brought to life an African-American musical form that led the way to the Jazz Age of the 1920s, the boogie-woogie/swing style of the 1930s and ’40s, and the rock and roll of the 1950s and ’60s and beyond.

Motor Muster More than 500 , bicycles, motorcycles, trucks and other vehicles from the 1930s through the 1970s were on display throughout Greenfield Village during Motor Muster weekend. The 2010 Motor Muster celebrated America’s compact cars. Special activities included Popular Choice Voting, various presentations about automotive history, a World War II encampment at Cotswold Cottage and more.

Holidays at The Henry Ford Holiday Nights in Greenfield Village again drew record crowds, but Henry Ford Museum also saw its own measure of holiday magic. As in past years, families were enthralled with the giant Christmas tree, visits with Santa and two remarkable train displays.

Community Engagement Several times throughout the year, free admission was provided to families who might not otherwise be able to visit The Henry Ford. Specially facilitated children’s activities, live music, dramatic presentations, make-and-take activities and other special programming were presented during these well-attended days.

Annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Symposium The fifth annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Day Symposium was held in February 2010 in conjunction with Target Days in order to promote greater attendance. This year’s symposium featured Dr. Clayborne Carson, one of the nation’s foremost King scholars and an author, researcher and distinguished academic. He is a professor of history at Stanford University and founding director of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Research and Education Institute. Dr. Carson spoke about the influence that Dr. King and the U.S. civil rights movement had on the world beyond our borders. The morning symposium was followed by a youth session that focused on Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolence that was so influential to Dr. King.

annual report 2010 | 9 Target Family Days in the Museum 2010 marked the third year of The Henry Ford’s partnership with Target to offer free admis- sion to Henry Ford Museum. On Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, Target provided free round-trip bus service from its partner organizations. New in 2010, Target extended its commitment to underwrite admission for Presidents Day in February, Labor Day in September and a national free day in July.

Celebrate Black History Month in Henry Ford Museum Throughout February, guests to the Henry Ford Museum explored America’s modern civil rights movement through music, drama and hands-on activities. These activities included: • Minds on Freedom at the Drive-In Theater: Using songs, speeches and images, this show celebrated the individuals whose commitment powered the civil rights movement. • Hands on Freedom: Visitors made a “Leaders of the Civil Rights Movement” headband and posted their thoughts on the question, “What if Dr. King was alive today?” near the Made in America exhibit. • We Don’t Want Them: Race and Housing in Metropolitan Detroit, 1900–1968 Exhibit: This exhibit explored how housing policies in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s impacted the lives of African Americans in metropolitan Detroit.

Enhancing the Experience Innovation was the guiding principle underlying the changes that took place at The Henry Ford.

Museum Plaza A small but significant change was made to the main entrance to Henry Ford Museum. As visitors enter the Museum floor, they now encounter four large portals to guide them to the

12 | annual report 2010 Museum’s signature exhibitions: Made in America, With Liberty and Justice for All, Heroes of the Sky and Automobile in American Life, which will become Driving America. These renovations have helped to create a grand entryway befitting the remarkable collections of The Henry Ford. Edison’s Last Breath, formerly at the plaza entrance, was moved inside the Made in America – Making Power exhibit.

Fully Furnished Henry Ford Museum’s furniture exhibit received a “non-extreme” makeover in 2010. We gave the exhibit a fresh look by adding a new coat of paint, rearranging artifacts and offering new insights and stories about one of the finest furniture collections in the nation. New sections were created with themes such as American Chair Classics and Furniture with a Past. Familiar sections such as Kids, Turning Technology into Furniture and Before Indoor Plumbing were updated.

Racing in America In June, we announced an initiative to create a new racing exhibition for permanent display in Henry Ford Museum. The exhibition, to be called Racing in America, will be powered by highly interactive displays and frontier-stretching technologies. Racing in America will bring auto racing to life with some of automotive history’s most significant vehicles, along with the personal stories and collections from legendary leaders and drivers and on-site demonstrations of today’s technological advancements. We will have more updates in coming months on our efforts to raise the $15 million necessary to make this exhibition a reality. To assist in our fund-raising, we secured the help of some of the racing industry’s most successful business people. Edsel B. Ford II, Roger Penske, Jack Roush and Rick Hendrick all agreed to be co-chairs in this endeavor. We are thrilled and very grateful for their commitment and support. Stay tuned for more details as Racing in America develops.

annual report 2010 | 11 COLLECTIONS & ACCESS The third major strategy to help fuel a renewed culture of innovation in America involves many behind-the-scenes activities that make up our Collections and Access systems. Only 6% of our remarkable collection is on display at any given time. This is just a fraction of the more than 80 historic buildings, one million three-dimensional artifacts and more than 26 million other documents that make up our collection. The remaining artifacts and treasures are largely in storage for their care and protection. There is always a balance to strike between preservation and access. But recent technological possibilities – including the digitization of artifacts, coupled with web-based and mobile tools – now make unprecedented public access to our vast collections possible. In the next decade, The Henry Ford will undergo a massive program to digitize its holdings and provide tools that enable widespread access to rarely seen American treasures.

Digitizing the Collections To provide digital access to our collections (or “digitize the collections,” as we often say) requires major changes and upgrades to our systems, processes and software as well as new skills, staff and equipment. In other words, it’s a big job! It is impossible for us to digitize all of the collections simultaneously. So we have to make choices, prioritize and apply different approaches to different types of collections. Initially, we are focusing our attention on our many and varied transportation-related collections to support the forthcoming automobile and racing exhibitions planned for Henry Ford Museum.

Collections and Stories System A major component of The Henry Ford’s new strategic plan is to grow and leverage our collections to expand the scope and scale of educational and public access. The digitizing work now taking place is the first step in this process. Strategies, objectives and plans have been developed to implement a new collections tool for our on-site and off-site visitors as well as our entire staff. The plan is to create a new era in which everyone will be able to access our collections, stories and historical knowledge through a web-based interface on a computer, smartphone or perhaps another device yet to be invented.

14 | annual report 2010 One of the most demanding tasks of the preparation for the new Driving America exhibition, scheduled to open in 2012, is creating extremely high-resolution digital images of every detail relating to the vehicles that will be on display.

annual report 2010 | 13 Creation of Digital Education Products Unless one has a high understanding of technology, it is hard to imagine the impact that all this activity has on our visitors. The Henry Ford’s Education Department created digital resources to help the public access our collections in several ways:

Driving America Educational Products • Seven new, comprehensive online instructional units entitled Educator DigiKits were created for elementary and secondary school students in social studies and science. • A unique interactive concept called ExhibitBuilder was launched that allows students, teachers and others to access and use transportation-related digital assets to create their own online 3D exhibitions. • From the Curators, which will provide researchers, students and teachers online expert content on transportation-related topics.

New Education Website With the institutional goal of making history relevant and preparing today’s learners for the 21st century, The Henry Ford made digital education a top priority. After three years of extensive research, we were proud to launch a newly upgraded and comprehensive education website at thehenryford.org/education. This new website offers unique online products and tools for a wide array of educators and learners.

DASH + National Contest The Henry Ford collaborated with ®, , Visteon and the College of Creative Studies Auto Design Department in the DASH+ national design contest. The contest was sponsored by the X Prize Foundation, Progressive Insurance and the Department of Energy. The DASH+ contest encouraged high school students across the nation to think “out of the box,” be innovative and propose the basic design of an “eco-friendly dashboard that can change the behavior of the driver and make us all environmentally responsible.” Henry Ford Academy was one of three semifinalists.

Digital Learning Library (DLL) The Henry Ford initiated a partnership with PBS to disseminate its new online educational resources to a national audience. The transportation DigiKits were the first products introduced. A large part of The Henry Ford’s new vision is to have a national impact on the culture of innovation in America. Creating distribution channels for our digital educational products so they can be used by students and teachers throughout the United States is a key piece of this strategy.

IDSA Partnership In 2010, The Henry Ford formed a partnership with the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) that will have a significant impact on our collections. The Henry Ford is not just a premier history destination, but we are home to one of the greatest industrial design collections in the world. IDSA is the voice of international industrial design, committed to advancing the profession through education, information, community and advocacy. As part of the new partnership between The Henry Ford and IDSA, Henry Ford Museum will now host the annual International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA), which foster business and public understanding about the impact of industrial design on the quality of life and the economy.

18 | annual report 2010 2010 Major Archival Acquisitions Some of the significant additions that were made to the collections in 2010: Model Car, 1962 Mustang I Concept Car The , introduced in 1964 as a 1965 model, became one of the most important cars in Ford Motor Company’s history. But there was a Mustang concept car before the production Mustang. The model is of the concept car. It was a small two-seater with a rear-mounted engine. Ford introduced it in 1962 at the United States Grand Prix in Watkins Glen, N.Y. The car subsequently toured colleges and made other racetrack appearances. Ford used the car to build interest among young people and to make the point that new, exciting products would be coming from the company. The Henry Ford has the original concept car as well as a good deal of related documentation. Gift of John Najjar and Barbara Ramsey

Letters Written by Mark Twain A May 26, 1904, letter from Mark Twain to Governor Francis of Missouri is in response to the request for Twain to attend the St. Louis World’s Fair of 1904 (also known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition) as a famous “native son.” Twain, residing in Florence, Italy, for his wife’s health, replies he cannot participate but will be well-represented by a portrait he is currently having painted. That painting – the last known portrait of the writer – is in the collection of The Henry Ford, and this letter, filled with Twain humor, adds context to the painting. The other letters and notes were acquired as part of the lot containing the 1904 letter. They were all written in the last months of Twain’s life (he passed away on April 21, 1910) and will require research to fully understand their importance beyond the autograph value.

Fair Lane Rail Car Archival Collection This documentation of the Rail Car provides the technical history of the car and reflects modifications made over time by its various owners. There is historical information about the car and when and why various changes were made. Since the car is a major artifact in our collection (donated to The Henry Ford in 1996 by Richard Kughn), the drawings and correspondence inform any work on the object. Outside researchers would be interested in the construction of a specialty-built rail car that was considered one of the most expensive, heavily constructed, self-contained business cars in use at the time. Gift of Richard Kughn

Robert Propst Collection Robert Propst (1921-2000) is primarily recognized as the pioneer designer of modular office furniture systems, in particular Herman Miller’s cubicle-based Action Office. This collection comprises material related to the entire design process, from concept to manufacturing and marketing. The collection — which includes prototypes, conceptual sketches, correspondence, photographs and models — covers Propst’s design career from the 1950s to the 1990s. Gift of Leanore Propst

20 | annual report 2010 The Inspiration Project On October 6, 2010, The Henry Ford announced the successful conclusion to the Inspiration Project, the largest and most successful capital campaign in The Henry Ford’s history. Under the leadership of The Henry Ford’s past president, Steven K. Hamp, the Inspiration Project Campaign secured $155 million in gift commitments to bring about transformative changes to our institution. The immense generosity of the Ford family, including the single largest gift in The Henry Ford’s history by Mr. William Clay Ford, Sr., allowed us to realize this great transformation and inspired others to join our ambitious campaign.

Hundreds of individual, foundation and corporate donors invested in us, and to all of them we offer our sincere and heartfelt thanks. The campaign enabled us to do many things. A small sampling of our accomplishments: • Replacement of the entire underground infrastructure in Greenfield Village. • Addition of the Josephine Ford Plaza entryway to Greenfield Village. • The beautiful restoration of the Museum Promenade. • Creation of distinct historic districts in Greenfield Village. • Funding for exhibitions, such as Heroes of the Sky and With Liberty and Justice for All. • Creation of Driving America, which will open in early 2012. • Replacing the electrical infrastructure that serves the Museum, Lovett Hall and some portions of Greenfield Village. • Replacement of the circular driveway in front of the Museum as a major in-kind contribution from a number of construction firms and suppliers.

There were many more projects supported by the campaign, not to mention the increased support for our annual operations. While we accomplished a great deal, the transformation of The Henry Ford continues. We hope you, our donors and friends, will join us as we advance our mission as America’s Greatest History Attraction®.
