Concentric: Studies in Linguistics 37.2 (July 2011):123-154 Phonetic Evidence for the Contact-Induced Prosody in Budai Rukai * Chun-Mei Chen National Chung Hsing University This paper investigates the contact-induced prosody in Budai Rukai, an Austronesian language spoken in Taiwan. By providing phonetic representations of word stress shift in Budai Rukai, the contact-induced prosody has been further verified. The contrastive stress in the Budai dialect is in the process of developing predictable penultimate stress resulting in innovations in new settlements. Budai Rukai speakers who have frequent contact with Paiwan speakers tend to produce the Paiwan stress patterns. The prosodic change has applied an optional rule of extrametricality, and echo vowels have been treated as proper vowels in the varieties. Antepenultimate stress becomes penultimate stress in trisyllabic or longer prosodic words, with a release from extrametricality. Results also suggest that speaker variability affected the stress shift in Budai Rukai. Keywords: phonetic evidence, contact-induced prosody, Budai Rukai, stress 1. Introduction This paper investigates word-level phonetic features of the varieties of Budai Rukai, and I propose that the prosodic varieties of Budai Rukai have undergone a change due to language contact. Stress in Budai Rukai has been a controversial issue (Li 1977, Ross 1992, Blust 1997). Previous studies address the stress issue mainly within the work of historical reconstruction. None of the existing studies have made a careful examination on the prosodic phonology of stress in Budai Rukai, let alone empirical evidence for the innovation of the prosodic patterns. The controversy of the Rukai stress lies in the inconsistency with the penultimate prominence or “paroxytones”, following the practice of Zorc (1983), and the phonological environments in which predictable stress patterns are attested. -

The villains of Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty are all witches; women who wield dark magic to maledict the innocent. In stark contrast, Formosan aboriginal mythology villains take on decidedly dissimilar roles. In the Paiwan story of Pali, for example, Pali is a young boy who, through no fault of his own, is cursed with a pair of red eyes that instantaneously kill all living things that they see. Pali’s identity and the reasons for his evil acts are diametrically opposed to those found in “typical” Western tales. This article investigates the identities and motives of villains in Formosan aboriginal stories. Despite the unfortunate lack of related material in English, Taiwan Indigene: Meaning Through Stories (臺灣原住民的神話與傳說套書) offers a unique look into the redirection of English literature to source from a wider geographic and ethnographic perspective and serves as the primary data source for this research. Works done in this vein indicate a greater openness toward the “other” ethnic groups that remain almost completely absent from English literature. The identities of the villains and the elements motivating their nefarious deeds are investigated in detail. Can the villains of such stories be grouped broadly according to identity? If so, what aspects can be used to describe that identity? What root causes can be identified with regard to the malevolent acts that they perpetrate? The ambitions behind this study include facilitating a lifting of the veil on the mysterious cultures native to Formosa and promoting a greater understanding of, and appreciation for, the rich and complex myths of the Formosan aboriginal peoples. -

Women of the Seediq weave clothes and quilts for their families as they believe that only women with good weaving skill can pass through the Rainbow Bridge and be reunited with ancestors after they die. However, due to changing society, there is little demand for weaving today, and the norms observed by their ancestors are gradually disappearing, resulting in the declining number of locals capable of weaving. The weaving techniques of these Indigenous people are on the verge of disappearing. Unfortunately, when the government took measures to preserve the techniques by registering Seta Bakan as the preserver of intangible cultural heritage, and launched training classes to save such techniques, no locals were initially interested in learning weaving. After non-Seediq people were allowed to participate in learning, the course attracted weaving lovers from all over the island. The course included five learning phases within four years, which were given in urban communities. In the fourth year, the weaving teacher was invited to carry out a course to teach in her Indigenous village. -

Although ecotourism provides a more proactive and positive tourism pattern to tribes, what academics and practitioners care about is that tribal communities develop tourism activities and develop autonomy during the promotion process. How to inherit and extend the spirit, value, and living system of the traditional culture of indigenous peoples, and put them into practice in subjective ecotourism of tribes, is an issue worthy of discussion and reflection. Therefore, this study used multidimensional Scaling to analysis and assesses the perceived status of seven common activity types of tribal ecotourism. This study used nine indices: community empowerment, subjectivity, traditional culture, participation, self-identity, communication, nature-based, conservation, and commerce to perform cluster analysis, benchmark analysis, and assessment on the competitive situation, and further develop appropriate subjective ecotourism mechanisms for indigenous peoples. Multidimensional Scaling and cluster analysis showed that, from the perspective of Atayal people, the community empowerment and subjectivity of “Indigenous Culture Interpretation” were better than other types of ecotourism. -

Rd. Taipei 106, Taiwan Tel: 886-2-2393-6798 E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Indigenous peoples in Taiwan belong to the Austronesian racial group. Confined to their oral language tradition, knowledge about Taiwan aborigines based on written documents reflected the positionality of dominant ethnic groups. This qualitative study employed participatory research approach to explore the process of producing their own knowledge through collective investigation of problems and issues among Taiwan aborigine tribal members in the Nantou region. Nantou is located in the central mountain range of Taiwan. The data were collected through participatory observation and interviewing 6 key research participants about their experiences of participating in this project. Two main findings are revealed from the analysis of these data. The first finding is the participants’ expectation of adult educators’ role as an information provider. They also expect adult educator as a facilitator for promoting the project to move towards a more empowering praxis and as a mediator for attracting external attention on indigenous voices. The second finding is that minority’s experiences are always a site of struggle and central to this struggle is the reconfiguration of ‘ethnicity’ which is rooted in socio-cultural context. Taking account of context, experience might be distorted while experiential learning can be stigmatizing, in that learners can become un-reflective prisoners of their experience. However, experience certainly has the potential of liberating marginalized learners. -

The Nationalist Party first defined the Incident as a rebellion by pro-Japanese forces and communist saboteurs. As the enemy of the Nationalist Party in China’s Civil War (1946-1949), the Chinese Communist Party initially interpreted the Incident as a Taiwanese fight for political autonomy in the party’s wartime propaganda, and then reinterpreted the event as an anti-Nationalist uprising under its own leadership. -

Systematic sampling and a survey questionnaire procedure was employed in this study. After the factor analysis, three underlying dimensions were found when examining Tao residents’ perceptions of social and cultural impacts of tourism, and they were named: positive cultural effects, negative cultural effects, and negative social effects. -

By delineating care for the elderly both in policy and practice, the study examines how relationships between indigeneity and coloniality are realized in today’s multicultural Taiwan. Decolonial scholars have argued that greater recognition of Indigenous rights is not the end of Indigenous peoples’ struggles. Social policy has much to learn from encountering its colonial past, in particular its links to colonization and assimilation. Meanwhile, coloniality continues to make the Indigenous perspective invisible, and imperialism continues to frame Indigenous peoples’ contemporary experience in how policies are constructed. The ancestor’s nose flute is like tears... When I am depressed, the sound of the nose flute becomes a sign of sorrow. When I hear the sound of the nose flute, I always have my lover in mind. —Sauniaw Tjuveljevelj, from the song “Lalingedan ni vuvu,” in the album Nasi1 In 2011, the Taiwanese government’s Council for Cultural Affairs declared Indigenous Paiwan lalingedan (nose flutes) and pakulalu (mouth flutes) to be National Important Traditional Arts. 2 Sauniaw Tjuveljevelj, a designated preserver of Paiwan nose and mouth flutes at the county level, released her first album Nasi in 2007, which included one of her Paiwan songs “Lalingedan ni vuvu” [“The Ancestor’s Nose Flute”]. Using both nose flute playing and singing in Paiwan language, the song shows her effort to accentuate her Paiwan roots by connecting with her ancestors via the nose flute. The lines of the song mentioned above reflect how prominent cultural discourses in Taiwan depict the instruments today; the sound of Paiwan flutes (hereafter referred to collectively as Paiwan flutes) resembles the sound of weeping, which is a voice that evokes a sense of ancestral past and “thoughtful sorrow.” However, the music of Paiwan flutes was rarely labeled as sorrowful in literature before the mid-1990s. -
