When I hear the sound of the nose flute, I always have my lover in mind. —Sauniaw Tjuveljevelj, from the song “Lalingedan ni vuvu,” in the album Nasi1 In 2011, the Taiwanese government’s Council for Cultural Affairs declared Indigenous Paiwan lalingedan (nose flutes) and pakulalu (mouth flutes) to be National Important Traditional Arts. 2 Sauniaw Tjuveljevelj, a designated preserver of Paiwan nose and mouth flutes at the county level, released her first album Nasi in 2007, which included one of her Paiwan songs “Lalingedan ni vuvu” [“The Ancestor’s Nose Flute”]. Using both nose flute playing and singing in Paiwan language, the song shows her effort to accentuate her Paiwan roots by connecting with her ancestors via the nose flute. The lines of the song mentioned above reflect how prominent cultural discourses in Taiwan depict the instruments today; the sound of Paiwan flutes (hereafter referred to collectively as Paiwan flutes) resembles the sound of weeping, which is a voice that evokes a sense of ancestral past and “thoughtful sorrow.” However, the music of Paiwan flutes was rarely labeled as sorrowful in literature before the mid-1990s. -

ASSERTING SOVEREIGNTY THROUGH STRATEGIC ACCOMMODATION: THE RUKAI PEOPLE AND COLLABORATIVE CONSERVATION IN PINGTUNG, TAIWAN By Ying-Jen Lin A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Anthropology—Doctor of Philosophy 2020 ABSTRACT ASSERTING SOVEREIGNTY THROUGH STRATEGIC ACCOMMODATION: RUKAI PEOPLE AND COLLABORATIVE CONSERVATION IN PINGTUNG, TAIWAN By Ying-Jen Lin This dissertation examines how the Rukai, an Indigenous people of Taiwan, have engaged in community-based ecotourism and the state’s conservation projects in order to assert Indigenous sovereignty over traditional territories. This study focuses on the Adiri and the Labuwan communities, which are communities of the Rukai people living in the Wutai Township in Pingtung, Taiwan. The two Rukai communities have actively collaborated with the government on various conservation projects although the relationship between Indigenous peoples of Taiwan and the settler state’s forest governance system has been riddled with conflicts. Existing research has portrayed collaborative environmental governance either as an instrument for co-optation of Indigenous interests or as a catalyst for a more equitable relationship between the state and Indigenous peoples. This dissertation builds on and extends this body of work by examining how the Rukai people have continueD to assert sovereignty in the community-based ecotourism and collaborative conservation projects. 2 From paths to traditional territory: Wayfinding and the materialisation of an ancestral homeland Wen-ling Lin Introduction The concepts of an ‘ancestral home’, ‘old tribe’ and ‘traditional territory’ have often been the main concerns at various Taiwanese indigenous social and cultural events. Every ‘return to the old site’ or ‘exploration for an old tribe’ implies, more or less, the loss or disappearance of an original habitat. Following the instructions of their elders, younger generations search through the mountains for the sites where their ancestors used to live and work. Wayfinding while walking to a certain place has become a common theme of these activities. The trajectories of such movements circumscribe the possible scope of a traditional territory. By walking, indigenous peoples make repeated visits to their ancestral home, giving form to their ‘ancestral homeland’ as conceived by their elders. The concept of a ‘homeland’ comes into being during the process of searching and a relationship is formed between people and the land. This differs drastically in terms of feelings and expression from the dematerialisation of space in contemporary social life. 29 AUSTRONESIAN Paths AND JOURNEYS Laipunuk is a region in the southeastern section of Taiwan’s Central Mountain Range, including the upper and middle reaches of the Luye River, a tributary of the Beinan River. It encompasses the present-day townships of Yanping and Haiduan in Taitung County, the western parts of the Maolin and Taoyuan districts of Kaohsiung City and the border between Wutai Township and Pingtung County. According to the literature, in the early days, it was where the Ngerarukai Rukai (‘Oponoho’ or Wanshan in Chinese), the East Rukai Danan community, the Southern Tsou and the Puyuma lived. -

In these languages, regardless of whether such markers are obligatorily required or are inherently marked with referential features, the presence of empty DP may be allowed in subject position. By comparing with some relevant facts in other languages like Chamorro, Chinese and English, it is shown in this paper that functional categories like case markers may license nominal subjects with empty determiners (cf. Longobardi 1994). In addition, for human or non-human nouns, Paiwan has two kinds of case markers, each marked with distinct referential features (cf. Huang et al. 1998 and Chuang 2002). Introduction Within the theory of phrase structure two important issues concerning the study of the noun phrase are how the functional categories of a nominal argument may be projected and how the reference of a nominal argument may be licensed and identified. Storytelling of Taiwanese Aborigines Plays
ABSTRACT STORYTELLING OF TAIWANESE ABORIGINAL PLAYS BALENG AND SNAKE, FLYING FISH FISHERS, AND HAWK SISTERS By SHU-CHIN HUANG This creative thesis focuses on my three adapted Taiwanese aboriginal plays, which staged in Ernst theatre in Miami University. Chapter One includes the historical origins of Taiwanese aborigines told by different countries through different perspective. Chapter Two is a review on the playwriting process how I applied storytelling and theatrical form in these three aboriginal stories. In Chapter Three, I discuss production process as well as the process translators working with translators. The whole creating process of these three plays focuses on the pursuit of nature theme and uses theatre as a new way of storytelling to English-speaking people. Chapter Four are the scripts, which were staged in Ernst nature theatre in Miami University in middle August, 2005. A sequential process of language classification described by random walks on the matrix of lexical distances allows to represent complex relation- ships between languages geometrically, in terms of distances and angles. We have tested the method on a sample of 50 Indo-European and 50 Austrone- sian languages.
