Benedict Department of History Graduate Program Professor Kevin Boyle ABSTRACT This work explores how German immigrants influenced the reshaping of American citizenship following the Civil War and emancipation. It takes a new approach to old questions: How did African American men achieve citizenship rights under the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments? Why were those rights only inconsistently protected for over a century? German Americans had a distinctive effect on the outcome of Reconstruction because they contributed a significant number of votes to the ruling Republican Party, they remained sensitive to European events, and most of all, they were acutely conscious of their own status as new American citizens. Drawing on the rich yet largely untapped supply of German-language periodicals and correspondence in Missouri, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., I recover the debate over citizenship within the German-American public sphere and evaluate its national ramifications. Partisan, religious, and class differences colored how immigrants approached African American rights. Yet for all the divisions among German Americans, their collective response to the Revolutions of 1848 and the Franco-Prussian War and German unification in 1870 and 1871 left its mark on the opportunities and disappointments of Reconstruction. -

This article re-examines the career of Sir Thomas Lunsford, one of the most notorious 12 royalist officers of the English Civil War. Drawing on a wide range of contemporary sources, it not 13 only casts new light on the pre-war activities of Lunsford himself but also explores the ways in 14 which his blood-thirsty reputation was exploited by parliamentarian polemicists on the eve of the 15 conflict. The article argues that, following the death of the proto-royalist playwright and plotter Sir ’ ‘ ’ 16 John Suckling in , Lunsford inherited Suckling s mantle as the archetypal cavalier , and that it was in association with Sir Thomas’s name, rather than Sir John’s, that the hostile caricature 17 of the royalist gentleman-at-arms was first introduced to the English population as a whole. The 18 article concludes by exploring the persistent rumours of cannibalism which have swirled around 19 Lunsford’s name for the past years – and by demonstrating that, while the claim that Sir 20 Thomas possessed a taste for human flesh may well have originated in the parliamentarian camp, 21 it was, rather surprisingly, royalist writers who subsequently did most to keep his anthropophagical 22 reputation alive. 23 24 25 26 27 ‘Cavaliers and roundheads’: the popular party-labels which were applied to the 28 supporters of Charles I and parliament during the Great Civil War of – 29 have continued to haunt the English historical imagination ever since. -
Fort Jackson (1808 – 1861)
General History of Fort Jackson To understand the history of Fort Jackson, we must realize that the land surrounding the fort today is far different from what it was when European first saw the Savannah River. The river flowed through many marshy fields resembling a flat plain. The appearance of the area caused the founder of Georgia, General James Edward Oglethorpe, to name the river and town “Savannah,” meaning a treeless plain or relatively flat, open region. When early Indians built large ceremonial mounds near the river, they could not find dry land to build on closer than a mile from the river. One set of these mounds was located about 1600 yards southwest of the future site of Fort Jackson. No doubt General Oglethorpe noticed these mounds as he searched for high ground for his settlement in 1733. As the river flowed around present-day Hutchinson’s Island, the two channels rejoined north of a small clay island which rose just a few feet above the water at high tide. The convergence of these channels created a deepening to about 30 feet, more than ten feet deeper than normal. This part of the river became known as Five Fathom Hole. A few years later, an illiterate brick mason named Thomas Salter chose a site for a brickyard three miles east of the city on the south bank of the Savannah River where he hoped to earn a good living making bricks for housing foundations. The spot he chose was actually the small clay island. The brick-making trade was one of intense hand labor and has not changed in hundreds of years. -

Heading west, they sought freedom across the Sabine River, the border into Spanish Texas. The slave master James Kirkham followed quickly on their heels, hoping to convince Spanish officials to return the people he considered to be his property. Before crossing the Sabine, Kirkham stopped at a tavern, where he met a man named Moses Austin who was also travelling to Texas. Austin was headed to the same destination: San Antonio, where he planned to ask permission from Spanish authorities to settle American families in Texas. Austin believed such settlement would be profitable because the land was excellent for developing a slave-based cotton economy. The slave catcher at the tavern was exactly the kind of man Austin hoped would purchase land in his new settlements. The two men decided to make the long journey to San Antonio together. Austin’s plans were connected to major events in world history. New technology coming out of the British Empire had recently allowed for the mass production of cheap cotton cloth, and the British had begun supplying a voracious global market with fabric that was lighter, softer, more durable, and easier to clean than anything most people had ever had access to. Cotton production quickly became one of the most profitable enterprises in the world. When the War of 1812 ended, hundreds of thousands of White Americans flocked to the territories that would become Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. -

This is an excellent website for the Civil War, especially for local history. 2 Lesson 1. The English Civil War The English Civil War began in 1642, and was fought between supporters of Parliament and supporters of the King. It lasted for seven years, and was the bloodiest conflict ever fought on English soil. Nearly 4% of the population died, and families were pitted against each other: brother against brother, father against son. The soldiers who fought for Parliament were nicknamed the ‘roundheads’ due to their short hair, and those who fought for the King were nicknamed ‘cavaliers’ due to their flamboyant appearance. The roundheads were the more disciplined army, and eventually won the war. See pages 157-160 of What Your Year 4 Child Needs to Know. Anderson (then S/Sgt.) distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as chief of section in Battery A, against a hostile force. During the early morning hours Battery A’s defensive position was attacked by a determined North Vietnamese Army infantry unit supported by heavy mortar, recoilless-rifle, rocket-propelled-grenade and automatic-weapons fire. The initial enemy onslaught breached the battery defensive perimeter. Sfc. Anderson, with complete disregard for his personal safety, mounted the exposed parapet of his howitzer position and became the mainstay of the defense of the bat- tery position. Sfc. Anderson directed devastating direct howitzer fire on the assaulting enemy while provid- ing rifle and grenade defensive fire against enemy soldiers attempting to overrun his gun section position. While protecting his crew and directing their fire against the enemy from his exposed position, two enemy grenades exploded at his feet knocking him dow and severely wounding him in the legs. Despite the excru- ciating pain and though not able to stand, Sfc. Anderson valorously propped himself on the parapet and continued to direct howitzer fire upon the closing enemy and to encourage his men to fight on. -
