Bull Received: 10 September 2016; Accepted: 24 March 2017; Published: 26 March 2017 Abstract: Disney’s animated feature Frozen (2013) received acclaim for presenting a powerful heroine, Elsa, who is independent of men. Elsa’s avoidance of male suitors, however, could be a result of her protective father’s admonition not to “let them in” in order for her to be a “good girl.” In addition, Elsa’s power threatens emasculation of any potential suitor suggesting that power and romance are mutually exclusive. While some might consider a princess’s focus on power to be refreshing, it is significant that the audience does not see a woman attaining a balance between exercising authority and a relationship. Instead, power is a substitute for romance. Furthermore, despite Elsa’s seemingly triumphant liberation celebrated in Let It Go, selfless love rather than independence is the key to others’ approval of her as queen. Regardless of the need for novel female characters, Elsa is just a variation on the archetypal power-hungry female villain whose lust for power replaces lust for any person, and who threatens the patriarchal status quo. The only twist is that she finds redemption through gender-stereotypical compassion. -

Journal of the American Academy of Special Education Professionals (Spring-Summer 2009) Teaching Spelling to Singaporean Chinese Children with Dysorthographia in English Language: Lexical Versus Lexical Phonological Approach Noel Kok Hwee Chia EdD, BCET Early Childhood & Special Needs Education Academic Group - National Institute of Education Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Abstract Singaporean Chinese children diagnosed with dysorthographia in English language undergo an intensive spelling intervention program that teaches them to use either of the two spelling methods: lexical and/or phonological spelling strategies. Nevertheless, many of them continue to perform poorly in their spelling. A pretest-posttest experimental design was used to determine whether 20 children ages 9 to 10 years old diagnosed with dysorthographia who were taught both lexical and phonological spelling strategies would improve in spelling more than a matched control group of 20 children, also diagnosed with dysorthographia who were taught lexical spelling strategies alone. Both groups of children received five lessons per week over seven weeks. The results showed that while both groups improved in spelling performance significantly from pretest to posttest, the experimental group which was taught both lexical and phonological spelling strategies improved significantly more than the control group which was taught lexical spelling strategies alone. The term dysorthographia begins with dys announces that the symptom, condition or state of being is dysfunctional or faulty. Orthography refers to correct or standard spelling in general (Richards, Platt, & Weber, 1985). When the dys is added to orthography, dysorthographia becomes a term referring to a specific learning disability (SLD) associated with poor performance in spelling (Pierangelo & Giuliani, 2006). -

From Abkhazia to Chechnya, the region fractured ferociously and neighboring communities took up arms against each other in the name of ethnicity and religion. In the midst of some of the worst conflict in Europe since 1945, the semiautonomous, multiethnic Kabardino-Balkar Republic in the North Caucasus remained a relative oasis of peace. This is not to say there were no tensions—there is no love lost between Kabardians, Balkars, and Russians, Kabardino- Balkaria’s principal communities. But, why did these communities, despite the agitation of ethno-political entrepreneurs, not resort to force to solve their grievances, while many neighboring ones did? What institutions and practices have facilitated this peace? What role have state officials and state structures played in, on the one hand, producing inter- communal conflict, and, on the other hand, mediating and defusing such conflict? And why has land played such a crucial rule in inter-communal relations in the region over the longue durée? More than enhancing our knowledge of a poorly-understood yet strategically important region, the questions I ask of Kabardino-Balkaria are windows on larger issues of enduring global relevance. -

The catchy song, "Let it Go" is used for some TV commercials in Japan, anddoes not appear to be going away soon. Even Tokyo Disneyland offers a special Frozen event- a pa- rade from January to March 2016. This means that people are still enthusiastic aboutthe film. Many commentators have con- sidered the factors of the movie'ssuccess; its powerful sound- track or the content of the film. One of the most influential of Disney's animated films, Frozen was released on November 2013 in the U.S and came to Japan on March 2014. It was based on Hans Christian Andersen's book, The Snow Queen, which was published in 1844 (Wilde 143-144). There are two heroines in the film, Annaand her sister Elsa, which is unusual for Disney mov- ies. Familiallove, in particular sisterly love, is a major theme in 84 Mai Todoroki this film. Besides being the first double-heroine movie for Disney, the story seems quite common and not so special. However, accord- ing to a BBC article, Frozen made $1.219 billion worldwide and has become "the fifthhighest-grossing film in box office history" behind Avatar, Titanic, Marvel's The Avengers and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-part 2("Frozen Becomes", np). One of the main factors of its financial success was its reception in Japan. -

Grammaticalization and Language Change in Chinese
GRAMMATICALIZATION AND LANGUAGE CHANGE IN CHINESE This innovative study of grammaticalization in Chinese offers a highly accessible and comprehensive overview of both the diachronic development and current syntactic status of a wide variety of grammatical morphemes in Chinese. Approaching the issue of grammaticalization from a formal, theo retical point of view, but also making use of traditional insights into language change, Xiu-Zhi Zoe Wu shows how a range of syntactic mecha nisms have conspired to result in the grammatical constructions and functional morphemes of modern Chinese. Patterns from Chinese and an in depth analysis of the development of functional categories in the language are also used to argue for more general, cross-linguistic principles of language change, and provide valuable insights into the principled ways that grammatical words evolve across languages. Grammaticalization and Language Change in Chinese is a bold and inspired attempt to apply formal, Chomskyean syntactic theory to the tradi tional area of the study of language change. Although the analyses of the book are cast within such a theoretical approach to language, the data and generalizations brought to light should be of considerable interest to linguists from quite different backgrounds, and the central ideas and intu itions of the various chapters are presented in a way that makes them accessible to a wide and varied readership. The book is not only a highly informative and useful resource on Chinese but also clearly indicates what Chinese is able to show about language change and the phenomena of gram maticalization in general.
