Bull Received: 10 September 2016; Accepted: 24 March 2017; Published: 26 March 2017 Abstract: Disney’s animated feature Frozen (2013) received acclaim for presenting a powerful heroine, Elsa, who is independent of men. Elsa’s avoidance of male suitors, however, could be a result of her protective father’s admonition not to “let them in” in order for her to be a “good girl.” In addition, Elsa’s power threatens emasculation of any potential suitor suggesting that power and romance are mutually exclusive. While some might consider a princess’s focus on power to be refreshing, it is significant that the audience does not see a woman attaining a balance between exercising authority and a relationship. Instead, power is a substitute for romance. Furthermore, despite Elsa’s seemingly triumphant liberation celebrated in Let It Go, selfless love rather than independence is the key to others’ approval of her as queen. Regardless of the need for novel female characters, Elsa is just a variation on the archetypal power-hungry female villain whose lust for power replaces lust for any person, and who threatens the patriarchal status quo. The only twist is that she finds redemption through gender-stereotypical compassion. -

Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea Special Event Disney’s Halloween September 11 – October 31, 2018 URAYASU, CHIBA—“Disney’s Halloween,” a special event at Tokyo Disneyland® and Tokyo DisneySea® Parks from September 11 through October 31, 2018, will bring two different styles of Halloween for Guests to enjoy at the Parks, as well as a special Halloween atmosphere at the Disney Hotels and on the Disney Resort Line. This Disney-style Halloween event will provide families and friends even more enjoyment and fun during the “Tokyo Disney Resort® 35th ‘Happiest Celebration!’” For the first time, this special event will be themed to a “ghost version of Tokyo Disneyland.” An eerie, but appealing atmosphere of chills and thrills as Halloween ghosts welcome Guests to their spooky version of the Park. Premiering this year is the “Spooky ‘Boo!’ Parade.” The ghosts are searching for other spooks to join them, and this new parade makes everyone feel like they are ghosts as well. “Disney’s Halloween” at Tokyo Disneyland Decorations around the Park will feature lots of new ghosts and other elements to create the atmosphere of a spooky version of Tokyo Disneyland. Also, the nighttime presentation of “Celebration Street,” which takes place along Main Street in World Bazaar to mark the Tokyo Disney Resort 35th anniversary, will be offered in a Halloween version exclusively during this event. Again this year, Tokyo DisneySea Park will present a cool, but eerie Halloween event themed to the Disney Villains*. The Park will be transformed with an eerie atmosphere as the Disney Villains, together with Mickey Mouse and his Disney friends, host a cool Halloween party. -

The narrators enter to set the scene. At the palace gates, townspeople eagerly await the arrival of the royal family -- for at long last, today is the day they will learn who Princess Jasmine’s future husband will be! Among the “red carpet”-like atmosphere, we catch a glimpse of our hero, Aladdin, as well as the nefarious Grand Vizier, Jafar, and his conniving parrot, Iago. Ah! Here comes the royal family! The Sultan begins to parade his perspective princes for his daughter, Jasmine, much to the crowd’s delight. Jasmine tells her father that she doesn’t want to marry any of these men. She wants to be the one deciding who she marries and when. The Sultan reminds her that the “law is the law,” and the law says she must marry a prince...by tomorrow. Just then, we hear the police calling “thief, thief!” A loaf of bread has been stolen! Jasmine, wishing to run away, recognizes this opportunity and escapes into the chaos. At the same time, Aladdin, our bread thief, enters to avoid capture. The Sultan realises Jasmine is missing and orders a search. Jasmine, concealing her true identity, and Aladdin, who is still being chased, run into each other and decide to escape together to the marketplace. -

From Abkhazia to Chechnya, the region fractured ferociously and neighboring communities took up arms against each other in the name of ethnicity and religion. In the midst of some of the worst conflict in Europe since 1945, the semiautonomous, multiethnic Kabardino-Balkar Republic in the North Caucasus remained a relative oasis of peace. This is not to say there were no tensions—there is no love lost between Kabardians, Balkars, and Russians, Kabardino- Balkaria’s principal communities. But, why did these communities, despite the agitation of ethno-political entrepreneurs, not resort to force to solve their grievances, while many neighboring ones did? What institutions and practices have facilitated this peace? What role have state officials and state structures played in, on the one hand, producing inter- communal conflict, and, on the other hand, mediating and defusing such conflict? And why has land played such a crucial rule in inter-communal relations in the region over the longue durée? More than enhancing our knowledge of a poorly-understood yet strategically important region, the questions I ask of Kabardino-Balkaria are windows on larger issues of enduring global relevance. -

Based on the iconic animated film, with an Academy Award-winning score by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, Disney’s Aladdin KIDS is sure to send audiences soaring on a flying carpet ride filled with romance and adventure. Character Breakdown Lamp Salesman – Lead Character *Auditions will begin with campers entering 4th – 6th Grade. Younger grades should speak with the Show Director if they would like to audition for this character. A likeable fast-talking vendor who serves as the principal storyteller in the show. The student playing this role should be comfortable onstage and have a clear speaking voice. Since this is not a major singing role, it is ideal for a strong actor still developing his or her singing skills. Aladdin – Lead Character *Auditions will begin with campers entering 4th – 6th Grade. Younger grades should speak with the Show Director if they would like to audition for this character. Aladdin is the good-hearted, diamond-in-the-rough street rat. He carries most of the show, so we will look for a good singer. The audience should enjoy Aladdin's adventures and root for him to save the day. -
