Milne and based his first two parts of the trilogy on the Pooh's love for honey. Khitruk removed Robin and made Pooh the leading character. Pooh is balanced by the Piglet; they are best friends and are present in all parts of the story. While Pooh always takes the initiative, he often seeks advice and help from the Piglet. His animation was relatively simple and slowly paced compared to other Milne adaptations. Khitruk put much emphasis on the dialogues and timing – every move of his characters and every character line are intended to bring hidden details and irony to viewers of all ages.     Anatoliy Klots Advisor: Professor Galya Diment Depicting the Trickster: Soviet Animation and Russian Folktales Cartoons are the first introduction to folklore for many children. That is certainly true for Russian folktales that were often adapted for animated films. From the 1930s to the 1980s the Soviet animation industry produced over thirty cartoons based on Russian folktales and byliny and many more based on folklore of non-Russian peoples of the Soviet Union. This process involved the significant creative efforts of writers and directors to edit original stories, sometimes conjoining several plots into one film, making them more suitable for visual adaptation and often incorporating a Soviet treatment of folklore. The characters went through several stages, from comparatively straightforward transformations in some early films, to didactic Socialist Realist versions in the late Stalin era to artistic, to masterpieces of the stagnation decades, when folklore-based cartoons fused modernity and tradition or obtained “doublespeak” allusions typical for the art of the time. From the 1950s to the 1970 the world of the Soviet people changed, and this change was reflected in cinema and animation. The witty trickster-fool made a comeback as one of the main characters of the folklore-inspired animated films. In the Stalin era this character was often artificially limited to cheating social antagonists and defeating foreign enemies. In late Soviet animation, with its continuing modernization, the fool returned to his individuality in his quest towards personal happiness. This approach restored the origins of the trickster and returned to the ideals of private life, and the phenomenon of inner emigration that replaced the enthusiasm of the Thaw.

Like most Russian names, Norstein’s first and last names can both be transliterated from the Cyrillic to the Roman alphabet in at least two ways (Yuri or Yuriy and Norstein or Norshteyn). Because his surname is Jewish, the Russian pronunciation of it is more closely approximated by the Norshteyn spelling. However, both Norstein and Norshteyn are accepted in English-language sources. In fact, Clare Kitson, who has written the most substantial English-language text on Norstein, opted for the shorter spelling. Morton Chair of Supervisory Committee Gordana Crnković Department of Comparative Literature, Cinema and Media From 1956 until 1991, a group of animators based at the Zagreb Film studio, in the Croatian capital, produced approximately 500 shorts, including avant-garde experiments, children’s cartoons, gag shorts, and sex comedies. Like Yugoslavia itself, the Zagreb School of Animation (as the animators collectively came to be called) challenged utopian ideologies and the East-West binaries of the Cold War. Their work transformed the cartoon from a cinema of attractions, which celebrated the technology which gave it birth, into a cinema of the laborer, which celebrated the humble artisan behind the technology. Animation, historically, has been described as a seamless marriage between mankind’s lost childhood, embodied by anthropomorphized animals, and techno-modernity. The Zagreb School, however, emphasized human fallibility and accepted technical mistakes, such as a stray line in a frame, or an imperfectly synchronized connection between sound and movement. Rather than the confident Soviet new man, the defining character type of the Zagreb School was the “small man.” This dissertation uses the “small man” to understand how the Zagreb School 3 struggled with the major preoccupations of post-World War II Yugoslavia: fears of nuclear annihilation, environmental collapse, and the disorientations of urbanization.
