JULY 1909. LOCOMOTIVES DESIGNED AND BUILT AT HORWICH, WITH SOME RESULTS. - BY MR. GEORGE HUGHES, Member, CHIEF MECHANICALENGINEER, LAKCASHIRE AND YORKSHIRERAILWAY, HORWICH. Before discussing the desigu and performance of locomotives, the critic must have some knowledge of the railway upon which they run, and the nature of the work they perform. Particulars will be found by referring to the Appendices (pages 598-620), and the subjoined diagram Fig. 1 (page 5621, and statement, which give the power and weight of the various locomotives operating this traffic. The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company possess 1,517 locomotives, 1,052 of which have been constructed at Horwich, and there are about 1,100 engines in steam daily, varying, of course, according to the demands of the traffic. When the works at Horwich were opened, the company had 1,000 engines, namely, 353 passenger, and 647 goods. There were 29 different types of passenger-engines, and 26 types of goods- engines. In part one, the authors discussed boiler design and classification. Part two will discuss boiler components, and part three will describe the various chemistries used in boiler water treatment. Boiler Components The main components in a boiler system are the boiler feedwater heaters, deaerator, boiler, feed pump, economizer, boiler, superheater, attemperator, steam system, condenser and the condensate pump. In addition there are sets of controls to monitor water and steam flow, fuel flow, airflow and chemical treatment additions. Water sample points may exist at a number of places. Most typically the condensate, deaerator outlet, feedwater (often the economizer inlet), boiler, saturated steam and superheated steam will have sample points. -

60163 Tornado 60163 Tornado 60163 Tornado THE A1 STEAM LOCOMOTIVE TRUST Registered Office, All Enquiries: Darlington Locomotive Works, Hopetown Lane, Darlington DL3 6RQ Hotline Answerphone: 01325 4 60163 E-mail: [email protected] Internet address: www.a1steam.com PRESS INFORMATION – PRESS INFORMATION - PRESS INFORMATION PR04/04 Monday 4 October 2004 MAJOR STEP FORWARD AS NEW STEAM LOCOMOTIVE BECOMES A ‘PACIFIC’ Coupling rods fitted to Tornado at Darlington Locomotive Works The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, the registered charity that is building the first new mainline steam locomotive in Britain for over 40 years, today announced that No. 60163 Tornado is now a Pacific following the fitting of all four coupling rods to its six 6ft8in driving wheels (the name Pacific refers to the 4-6-2 wheel arrangement under the Whyte Notation of steam locomotive wheel arrangements) which now rotate freely together for the first time. Each of the four 7ft 6in rods weighs around two hundredweight and after forging, extensive machining and heat treatment, the four cost around £22,000 to manufacture. These rods are vital components within the £150,000 valve gear and motion assemblies, which are now the focus of work on Tornado at the Trust’s Darlington Locomotive Works. The Trust has also started work on the fitting of the rest of the outside motion. The bushes for the connecting rods are currently being machined at Ian Howitt Ltd, Wakefield and one side of the locomotive has now been fitted with a mock-up of parts of its valve gear. This is to enable accurate measurements to be taken to set the length of the eccentric rod as the traditional method of heating the rod to stretch/shrink it used when the original Peppercorn A1s were built in 1948/9 is no longer recommended as it can affect the rod’s metallurgical properties. -

Toy Trains, and Model Railways The Clockwork Era, 1952-55 The genesis of a lifetime’s hobby was, as usual at that time, a Hornby ‘O’ gauge clockwork train set, purchased probably for my birthday in 1952, or at Xmas later that year. This comprised a dark red 0-4-0 tank locomotive and two 4-wheeled carriages, running on jointed tinplate track which I took great pleasure in routing sinuously around the table and chairs, on the floor of our living room at Fenton Avenue, Staines, getting under everyone’s feet. This system was expanded to include various goods wagons, a level crossing, signals, a tinplate station, a further coach, and lastly an additional engine of the same 0-4-0 type, but this time enamelled in black livery. A broken mainspring, no doubt due to over-enthusiastic winding, was a problem requiring fiddly replacement by my father. This collection was probably sold to the Atkins at no 24, who had twin boys a few years younger than me. They also had all my old ‘Dinky Toys’ which too would have been worth something these days! However they were probably very ‘well-used’ and without their boxes, so perhaps not. “OO” gauge electric trains 1956-58 The replacement for my ‘O’ gauge system came in the form of a Hornby Dublo “Royal Scot” train set. I think this cost the princely sum of 63 shillings (£3.15) at a time when the average take-home pay was around £9 per week. Nowadays a similar set would be around £120, so the relative amounts are not greatly different. -
